Deal with Japan?

What's the deal with Japan? I see all the pros head over there, and they get pow shot after pow shot. So does it snow all the time over there or what? I'm just curious cause all I see is Pow edits from Japan. What's so special and what makes it so special?

just like the northeast gets lake effect, japan, sitting on an island, gets sea effect. and it's some of the lightest snow on earth, sometimes being twice as light as utah's "greatest snow on earth."

Japan gets crazy lake effect snow. The northern tip of Upper Michigan, for example, gets 300"+ every year just because of lake superior. It's all because of the water.

DobberJapan gets crazy lake effect snow. The northern tip of Upper Michigan, for example, gets 300"+ every year just because of lake superior. It's all because of the water.


Ahhh I see. Well that makes sense haha. Is that the only reason the pros go? Just for bottomless pow?

Yeah, it gets a lot of snow. Cold and dry snow. Most days through from mid December through until mid February or later. The reliable powder snow is definitely the reason why so many pro crews head out. The ease of finding fresh lines is also a big factor. Outside a couple of major resorts, there is almost unlimited tree skiing and pillows which look great in ski movies.

BUT, it's not guaranteed. Especially this year it has been really weird with warmer than average temperatures and even rain in January.

When it's on though, it's the best and deepest snow I've ever ridden.

dude japan is sweet. the food is great, the people are really nice, there's probably a lot of reasons the pros love japan, but "just" bottomless pow is a good enough reason to go for me....

I have been in Japan for weeks and it has just rained and rained and rained. Terrible season for Honshu AND Hokkaido. All of the scando's and Americans have given up and just left. It's also WAY more expensive than pretty much every other ski destination. And Japanese people are really impolite and unhelpful. Also, raw fish is gross. Don't come here. Just don't. It sucks.

Not sure if serious or doing the same thing us PNWsters do with Mount Baker. Incase anyone is wondering it rains a lot and its flat. The thing is the rain part is true this season for sure.

From what I have seen from my friends documentations this year there seems to be more bluebird days than average. Lots of alpine missions (or at least more than expected). I've always thought that the alpine in Japan looks awesome though so I'd consider it a good thing if I went and it wasn't dumping everyday so the visibility allowed us to get up high. Can only ski flat trees for so long, yA know?
