Replying to Handycam, Computer, Editing Questions

OK so here is the deal. My dad gave me his old Sony handycam for christmas, and I took some CRAZY ass video last night for new years and i want to edit out all the garbage, like when random people were filming. But the prblem is, is that my dad lost the CD-ROM that came with it and so i called my step brother up who seems to think he knows everything and he told me this:
-i need a firewire card and cable to hook up my camera
-I need more than 512 mb of ram, and idk even how much i have nor do iknow how to check.
-i need to get the drivers installed and then use windows movie amker, or Adobe Premier to capture the video.

Is this necessary, and how would i go about installing the drivers, because its not int eh add hardware wiard

I'm completley lost and would like to know sort of a rough idea of how i should go about doing this, and how much its gonna cost me. And if he is just blowin smoke up my ass

Any advice is greatly appreciated.
