Humpsthe word nice, and the knives you just threw out there are completely different things.
For protection purposes they make knives that won't get you in legal trouble if they find it on your person.
Kershaw, benchmade, and CRKT are good places to start looking.
I_Am_Modand as for protection, a knife is usually a dumb idea...
its pretty lethal but not easy to use effectively -> you're very likely to cut yourself in a fight, get disarmed and stabbed by your own knife or someone pulls a gun on you ...
if you feel unsafe there are better alternatives to protect yourself and those around you
TRVP_LVRDI want something durable. Butterfly knives aren't illegal in my state, however one of the cons with switchblades is that they are illegal

ESBJust came here to say that Opinels are the best knives out. Especially if you're actually using your knife for practical purposes, rather than being a clown-ass purporting to need a knife for "protection/collection purposes." What a fuckin' joke.
Huck_NorrisOpinels or Byrds. Byrds are made by Spyderco except they're $30 instead of $$$$$$$$$. I have an Opinel for my fishing kit (super sharp blades) and a Byrd for my pocket work/box/random shit beater knife.
proZachactually bought that bad boy on your recommendation. was so happy with it, I picked up one of their clam shuckin knives. also awesome.
SuusatajaIf you want a really nice knife get one with a Damascus steel blade.
Or other pattern-welded steel knives. They look amazing.

OregonDeadIf you want something legal that opens fast check out the Kershaw speedsafe designs. Great build quality. I like having products that are made locally and it's nice to be able to stop in at the factory to get my knives sharpened for free whenever. If there is a good knife factory near your town you should check it out to see if you can get something local.

omnidataBe careful, one of my friends broke his screen doing exactly that with my no. 12, he underestimated the magnetic pull. (And had a bit of a bad angle going on.)

MLBIf I were to trust folding kinves ( and I don't ) I would get anything Benchmade. The only company that's worth talking about in reference to those kinves.
Personally I have an Ontario TAK 1 that I use at work on a day to day basis. Such a handy knife to have. It's like a crowbar with an edge. I also have a Mora knife that I use from time to time....hard to keep sharp though.
A good first bush knife that's cheep is a Becker BK2. Your never gonna break it, and it's probably the best kinfe KA-BAR makes.

Huck_NorrisMy OCD makes me want to reach through my screen and whetstone that fucker for a good hour. Can't handle a non-gleaming cutting edge on a high carbon blade like that haha
