I know there are more brown pow lovers on this site, yah there is pinkbike but lets be honest, newshcoolers is wayyyy cooler. so lets posts our rides, questions about components, mechanic questions etc in this thread.

I just bought this beauty and i definitely sacrificed uphill capabiltiy in order to get a beefier dh/park bike. id been on a nomad for a while and it's a huge switch in riding styles for me. definitely getting used to the weight and having to keep speed a lot more.

specs for said beauty, 2011 rc2 dh totem, 2012 dhx rc4, highrollers front and back (gona go dhf front and highroller in the back), mtx 33 wheel set, slx brakes, diablous cranks, FSA 760mm Handlebar, Shimano SLX Shifter & Shimano Deore XT Derailleur.

Rad! Stoked to hear. And yeah if you make it up to Bellingham, Galbraith has a ridiculous amount of trails to ride. Most of which are all pretty chill.

People wanna knit pick and complain about the wandering bite point but I've never felt it beyond a small amount that didn't even bother me.

As long as you do a quick bleed every couple rides they are perfect, I have a set of xts and do a quick bleed every week or so and have never had that problem. Best part is it only takes 5 mins to do

I've fallen in fucking love with biking again and I'm starting to become obsessed

I have an old hardtail Raleigh with Shimano derailler and clamp brakes that I'm using for now (hand me down from older brother). It shifts pretty shitty and doesn't hold gears well when climbing.

I'll be taking it in to the shop to get it as tip top as it can be, but I'm also in the market for something newer with disc brakes and better shift capability that I can really grow as a mtn biker with. I can probably only afford a hardtail. Any suggestions?

Also does anyone have experience on night riding, and more specifically, black bear encounters? I just want to night ride the dirt roads around me, which is a very rural area in southern Vermont. We have black bears.
I've already ordered a few night riding lights and bear spray, and I'm considering carrying my 9mm in a chest rig as a last resort. But the last thing I want to do during a bear encounter is hurt or kill it; I'd rather avoid it at all costs. I've been riding during the day all summer and haven't spotted any, although there was a spotting a couple weeks ago a couple doors down. Any tips or words of wisdom would be appreciated.

Learn something about black bears before you shoot yourself or someone else because you crashed while riding like a jerry.

I'd worry about strange 2 legged critters or mountain kitties before I'd worry about black bears. The mtb community isn't super hip on carrying a gat either, but who cares.

Thanks mate. I'd only carry if I were alone but I just wanted some opinions from you guys in addition to the local community.

I was hoping to buy something new although in a lower price range and break the bike in myself, but perhaps used is the way to go for a better bike that's still relatively affordable (5-800). I don't know what I want or will need out of a bike at this point, I just want something solid to sink my teeth into for a couple of seasons that's a step up from my old Raleigh.

Bears in more rural places tend to sleep at night anyway, it's quite unlikely you'll run into one after sunset.
Worst case scenario if you have to resort to using bear spray, it's highly effective and probably more accurate than a 9mm would be in the dark?

This is the kinda thing I'm looking for, thanks. I ride home frequently at dusk with just a headlamp and blinker for any cars, and haven't spotted anything but I figure I've been lucky so far, and would rather have at least one line of defense beyond slowly backing away saying "SHOO bear". My bear spray arrives today and I'm going to order a training can to work with.

I'm planning to be very well lit - 500L headlamp + twin 600L Cygolites and L&M Urban 900L on the bike, plus all my firearms have weapon lights and night sights (again, would carry only as a last resort when riding alone, I'd prefer to use bear spray and walk home in any encounter, but I'll train for everything)

I'm wondering if all the bright lights at night would be helpful or detrimental, would it shoo large nocturnal critters or excite them?

Maybe I'm overthinking it, but I like to be prepared before getting into something dangerous. The last thing I want to do is round a blind corner and brake loudly a few feet short of a mama bear and her cub, or a mountain lion looking for a snack. I'm still learning the habits of critters in my area before I get too deep into the trails. I do feel reassured hearing that they're likely less active after dark then during the times I've been riding - morning and evening primarily. Thank you.

Yeah, after a few rides I'm so happy with them. Went with Zee's, which I hadn't ridden before, and so far I love them. Big thing I noticed right away was pad rattle, but that's easy to silence and a small price to pay for how good they feel.

To the post I was tagged in above: Sorry, hardtail was gone in like two hours haha. Now I'm trying to convince myself that I should get an XC bike.

I'm honestly unsure about this and wouldn't like to spread conjecture. I've been around many brown bears over the summer seasons in BC but every single encounter was during daylight.

In my experience they really don't care about humans whatsoever. In the below video, the bear was fully aware we were there, he just didn't give a fuck.

However, if you were to spook one whilst it is just settling down to sleep it could be an entirely different animal to the ones you see roaming around during the day. Whether the bear would act offensive or defensive is down to a thousand different factors. Best to keep that bear spray close to you anyway!

Take caution, they do rise early, so if you're out cycling early morning it's likely they'll be up too

Also, don't fall into the trap of buying bear bells - out in BC they're called dinner bells. As they're known to attract the bears out of curiosity rather than keep them away

That video is majestic. I'd love to have a brief, mellow encounter like that, then move on safely. Hell yeah.

Some cheap WTB i29s. First wheel set I've done this to, but also the cheapest wheel set I've run recently. They didn't stand up to the beating of regular black and double black tech in Whistler.

Investing in something quality now. Thinking some chromag wheels or some Spank 359's.

Forget the gun, just carry bear spray and most importantly, make noise. The biggest danger with bears and bikes is catching one by surprise because you're moving quickly and quietly. Holler loudly and frequently, especially approaching blind corners and thicker undergrowth. If they hear you coming they'll almost certainly move out the way before you even realise they're there.

(Experience: mountain biking most days in summer in prime national park bear country (black and grizzly), mostly solo early in morning or in the evening.)

Surprisingly wet past few weeks, especially vs. last summer when I don't think it rained, like, ever. Nice to ride some real dirt.

Got above what was a daily inversion the other day. Looks like we'll be back to the norm of sun & dust in CB soon, but the trails are pretty sweet right now.

think I jinxed it. Got a metric shit ton of rain and now dry as a bone. Hoping for one more rainy pattern before the usual dry fall period.

Where ya at? Summit has been getting a decent amount of rain and trails have been nice. There was a down pour that defaced the frisco dirt jumps but that team got after it and i think it's almost all open again.

basically hasn't rained in CB since I posted those pics 10 days ago. But I'm not too upset since I view any rain / tacky dirt here as a bonus, rather than the norm (especially after last year). On the plus side, riding here for the past two years has definitely improved my technique when it comes to hitting flat, dusty, kitty-litter-covered corners...

My favorite is when there's what you think is a nice berm, but it is just 2-3 inches deep of piled sand ready to swallow your tires and make you wash out.

One day I'll ride in the midwest or in the pnw, where your tires can grip actual soil. It'll be wild.

Breck. Ya sure you’ve been out the last couple of days? Trails are back to normal dusty conditions, even on the unmarked loamier trails. It’s friggin hot.



Luke, be thankful you have actually have good soil based dirt in CB. The only real kitty litter in your area is the bottom of doctor park haha it’s a whole different animal in summit, with a lot of pea gravel on top of rock hard.

Yeah I usually turn right onto hermit when comin out of Barney or bline. There’s actually a couple small jumps on hermit and still spits you out into town. Go give bakers tank or the slalom/hard luck area a try!!

You shouldn't ride Flying Monkey on your own. Even if you make it up the road, you will not find the trailhead. If you somehow find the trail, its incredibly technical and you're fucked if you get hurt. All around, that's a very stupid plan.

Brought my hardtail in to the shop for its first tune up in almost two decades, they charged me 60 in labor plus 80 for parts including a new koda saddle that feels like a hard, knobby dildo riding up my asshole. So basically I paid 140 for a permanent prostate exam and a lubed chain.

Yeah you are right, just super frustrated. Going on this trip with some friends and one of them is a competent mountain biker. I was under the assumption that we'd be riding but he has kind of decided that he just wants to day drink instead of ride bikes.

CLQYeah you are right, just super frustrated. Going on this trip with some friends and one of them is a competent mountain biker. I was under the assumption that we'd be riding but he has kind of decided that he just wants to day drink instead of ride bikes.


Play around on the original Rampage site then. There are numerous one hits, multi jump lines and very well established freeride lines with very little to no consequences if you fuck up.
