I know there are more brown pow lovers on this site, yah there is pinkbike but lets be honest, newshcoolers is wayyyy cooler. so lets posts our rides, questions about components, mechanic questions etc in this thread.

I just bought this beauty and i definitely sacrificed uphill capabiltiy in order to get a beefier dh/park bike. id been on a nomad for a while and it's a huge switch in riding styles for me. definitely getting used to the weight and having to keep speed a lot more.

specs for said beauty, 2011 rc2 dh totem, 2012 dhx rc4, highrollers front and back (gona go dhf front and highroller in the back), mtx 33 wheel set, slx brakes, diablous cranks, FSA 760mm Handlebar, Shimano SLX Shifter & Shimano Deore XT Derailleur.

When you say "new kona". How new are we talking? Which Shimano Brakes do you have, and which WTB tires do you have? I love the Shimano XT 4 piston brakes, and I also really like the WTB Vigilante tires I have. Both are great for the money.

There mt400 brakes. tires are wtb 2.25 trailboss I believe

Ya, those are pretty terrible brakes, but the trailboss tire is a great tire, unless you have the "comp" model. All "comp" model tires from WTB are garbage and branded as "affordable" tires. What do you not like about them? I have the Trailboss TCS 2.25 "tough and fast" model on my hardtail bike and like them a lot. I'm also a little biased though, because WTB is headquartered my hometown and I have friends who work for them.


For affordable 4 piston brakes, try the Shimano SLX

Mostly don't like the type of grip that they provide. they are a lot of fun and have good roll speed on some tacky flow jump lines but a lot of our stuff is pretty sandy and loose rn so I'd like something with a deeper tread and more aggressive exterior knobs. Wider as well

I understand that my technique ain't perfect but I'm a big boi and I've never felt a tire as squirley as this in the loose stuff. Comparing them to my gravel bike tires the profile isn't much more aggressive. I'd really like to go up in size. Especially with a hardtail that is being ridden on mostly downhill chundery stuff

You could always to the tried and true Maxxis DHF/DHR combo. I enjoyed that combo. Would work great for what you describe. I like my WTB Vigilante tires better. You could look I to either in wider. My bike came with Onzo Ibex 2.4 tires, but I honestly hated them. Same with the Maxxis Verdict.

Are you riding tubeless? That can make a big difference in traction too.

Minion dhf/dhr are awesome. I also really liked my continental trail kings for a lighter tire, but I burned through them pretty quick. Luckily you can find them halfway cheap.

Also. I think I just broke my 1x11 XTR deraileur (or at least the lower arm). Does anyone know if I need any adapter parts if I splurge on a the new 12x system? Also XT vs XTR for the potential upgrade? I'll probably just replace the old derailleur, since I'm unemployed thanks to Rona, but I'm serious eyeing the upgrade.

Second question first: You'll need a new driver body, 12 speed uses the new microspline. Otherwise, you should be fine.

I've been on GX eagle for almost four years now. It's awesome in a lot of ways, range is cool, price is right, it works pretty well. But it's a PITA to set up. I've found the B tension screw has to be perfect or else shifting performance just falls apart. You've gotta set the gap tool just right, while also sagging the bike, and if you mess it up, it all feels like crap. And then I feel like as soon as you get some miles on it, everything develops play, and you have to adjust again.

Basically, I'm just really ready to go 12 speed Shimano. Four years of the same level drivetrain on four different bikes means I'm really familiar with its weaknesses, and I'm just mentally ready to try to for an upgrade haha.

I believe everything you say haha! I've ridden a few AXS bikes, and if I wasn't a starving artist, I'd probably run it. Huge fan of how that drivetrain feels. To me, it's just frustrating that GX, which is basically the middle of SRAM's lineup right now, doesn't quite perform as well as SLX, which is way cheaper.

I'm super cost-conscious, and the fact that a whole XT group online is cheaper than a GX group, but I can't get a Shimano build stock on most bikes is starting to grind my gears. Hopefully that changes soon.

Until Shimano can roll out a suspension line, they’ll never be a mass OEM option. SRAM can give too good a deal for a bike brand buying everything they need from one outlet and in reality a huge chunk of the market won’t care if it’s GX or SLX on their budget build bike.

Just whatever you do, don't get the guide R and at least go RS. The lever on the R is different and so incredibly bad that takes modulation way beyond a spongey feel haha.

I put it on my commuter bike recently and so far so good. Every now and then it was lag a little on a shift but overall i think its been rad. Especially for the price.

I like the idea, and I have been on 2 piston brakes for several years and quite happy with the performance even on steeper downhills and some bike-park riding. I was seriously considering them but honestly just don't like the look of the lever which is dumb I know. I think I may try to hack something together for a 4/2 piston setup on my beater if I can find the right parts at my local co-op

Magura brakes are awful. Powerful, yes. Easily servicable? No. Lever feel? Trash.

Codes or XT 4-piston. Or just get Saints because duh!

Throwing more options in here, may also be good for @Lonely looking for budget brakes, but I’ve had some incredible experience with tektro orions(hd m-745). Ridiculously cheap and just a decontented trp 4-pot.

I have I9's on both of my bikes, and love them, but it does seem like some folks mangle the drive side bearing really fast. That said, when I did that, support was awesome, and they had parts in the mail like 20 minutes after emailing them. Have you looked at going DT Swiss? Don't have any personal experience with Hope, so I can't comment there.

Anyways, I'm a broke boy - a new wheel laced to an i9 or chris king would've been choice, but I went with the hope pro 4. I chose the hope hub over the dt350 because better engagement, hopefully she works out for me and I didn't make a mistake because I've heard nothing but good things about the dt350

Agreed. I've always had the XTs when possible for the past decade. My current bike came with the newer two pistons and they work really really well, considering only two piston. Much better than the older model XT.

Found a good deal, so I've got the 4 piston XTR sitting in "my cart" ready to purchase, and figured I'd throw the two pistons on my hard tail. Thoughts? Worth the upgrade money for the XTR brakes, or just get the 4 piston XT?

Yee powderhorn do be wavy tho. It’s not an elite park by any means but it’s the hill I’ve grown up skiing for the past 20 years so I’m loyal to it for that, and it’s pretty sick to see them embracing the mtb culture of GJ over the past few seasons

Wavy, as I use/understand it, just kinda means like cool or chill...generally associated with good vibes and a positive connotation

To your point and @CLQ, yes I would agree it's shitty in some ways. They only have one black, one blue, and three greens (one of which is just the service road lolz). The trails aren't the best builds, nor are they maintained the best. I remember once a few years ago there was an issue with the blue trail being too sandy/soft/blown out because there hadn't been any good rain in a couple months...so their solution was to dump a bunch of pea gravel on those sections of the trail thinking that would solve the problem. And I'm talking like the kind of stuff you see on school playgrounds sometimes...just as soft and unstable as the sand they were trying to combat. They did that a different time too when an upper section of the trail was too wet from melting and poor drainage.

So while they do some dumb shit like that from time to time, by and large it's not TOTAL shit ALL the time. It's $30 for a day, and I don't mind paying that to go up with my friends on a whim and spin some lift-serve laps 40 minutes from my house and drink some parking lot beers after doing 3-4 laps each on the blue and black.

Bottom line I don't hate it, but I certainly don't love it either. It's good for just some casual laps and dicking around with your friends. If you want a more serious/aggressive full day riding genuine flow/jump trails and more gnarly fast race-like tracks, obviously you should head somewhere like Trestle or CB.

Oh, like the old school wavy gravy but newer vernacular. got it. And ya, I have Snowmass Bike Park in my backyard, which has become an amazing park over the past few years, but it doesn't open for another couple weeks.
