johnobleStoked on that for you! I learned last winter and its a fantastic skill to have. Before I learned, I had the same thought about how sick a hanging rack would be, but just ended up doing some rehab/customization on my tray rack. Things to think about are how heavy the vertical rack is going to end up being(taking on/off the vehicle), and if you want to make a hinge at the base to tilt it out of the way to open a trunk/hatch.

cydwhitThere are a lot of variants of that design out there right now. I've used Recon racks, NS racks, as well as the Yakima branded ones. All have their strengths and weaknesses, so it really depends on how you want to use it. The NS rack is the least refined feeling rack to use that I've found, it's harder to load and unload, and is more likely to rub than the other racks I've used. The Yakima one is nice, but has too much play/flex in the main pivot for me to feel great about going fast with 6 bikes on it. I've been intrigued by the Lolo racks as well, it's a different take on the hanging racks. Lolo racks work with rigid forks, drop bar bikes, and fat bikes, which not all of the other vertical racks do, so it's hypothetically more versatile.

Whatever you do, I recommend you just use ski straps to lock down the fork and back tire. The proprietary straps found on most racks are clunkier, lest secure, less durable, and harder to use.

cydwhitSo, I was just doing this math for myself, and, as far as I can tell, most two bike tray racks extend less off the back of your car when loaded than any hanging rack on the market. That makes sense since to hang my bike vertically off the back of any car, with zero clearance between the tire and the back of the car, it still protrudes 120 cm off the back of the car. Whereas, overlapping two bikes with 800 mm wide bars, the widest point is more like 100 cm off the back of the car, and that's only the end of the bar, not the whole bike's leverage.

So I don't really see a reason to use a hanging rack for anything less than four bikes, because it's harder to load and unload, higher up with more wind resistance, usually less stable and prone to rubbing, and sticks out more than a regular tray rack would.

That's just my opinion though, after doing a lot of research and nerding out and deciding to sell my Yakima six bike rack to buy a 1Up tray rack. Cool project regardless.

doubleblackjackSo I have a rack that hangs bikes by the top tube right now, but it doesn't work with the top tube shape of my bike.
The top tube rack is a 2 piece design, so I was thinking I would take off the top part with the rack, still leaving the hinging part. This way I could make a new top piece with a vertical design, and still have it be able to hinge. It would be heavy af, but I plan to leave it on for the summer months and only take it off in the winter.

Oh and I was only thinking it would carry 2 or 3 bikes if that matters

ThaLorax1up singe rack with an add-on rack was possibly the beat non bike frame related purchase I've made in my 20+ years of riding. Especially since I'm short and always hated using my unreliable roof racks.


Not much for jumps, but there's some great shuttle options. You working the Billy Strings shows? Looks super fun, but I'm going to a different festival in a ghost town that same weekend.

I fuckin suck at moderation haha so i havent been drinking at all this month. Not sure a music festival is the place to go to continue to work on my sobriety 😆 but itll buff out.

cydwhitHave taken a few parking lot laps on one. Basically enough time to be impressed by how little it bobbed, even out-of-the-saddle efforts.

It's a really cool bike for the small percentage of people that can justify a pedal-friendly downhill bike. It's not light, and it's not "nimble" but Canfield knows how to make bikes that are reasonably efficient and absolutely crush the downs. What other bikes are you looking at?

appai recently rode in the leadville 100 mtb race and am curious if there are similar endurance bike races in the PNW since I plan on moving that direction in the next year or so.

I ride a 2017 BMC speedfox2 with maxxis ardents and love it but think I want to get my hands on a carbon Santa Cruz blur TR next season to see how fast I can really go across long distances without sacrificing all of the fun on chunky downhills between training rides.

i also find it hilarious how you see dudes put on the trails weeks before looking at every little thing and “getting their lines,” which obviously has some advantage, but like seriously its super grassroots and your on a 180mm 29er, you dont need to know where every pebble is
