I know there are more brown pow lovers on this site, yah there is pinkbike but lets be honest, newshcoolers is wayyyy cooler. so lets posts our rides, questions about components, mechanic questions etc in this thread.

I just bought this beauty and i definitely sacrificed uphill capabiltiy in order to get a beefier dh/park bike. id been on a nomad for a while and it's a huge switch in riding styles for me. definitely getting used to the weight and having to keep speed a lot more.

specs for said beauty, 2011 rc2 dh totem, 2012 dhx rc4, highrollers front and back (gona go dhf front and highroller in the back), mtx 33 wheel set, slx brakes, diablous cranks, FSA 760mm Handlebar, Shimano SLX Shifter & Shimano Deore XT Derailleur.

abar.As a corvallis local my main stomping ground was blackrock, they took a beating from a big storm this winter that took a lot of shit out and I haven't been back yet but they totally rebuilt this one jump trail that looks super sick. Another great place to go is alsea falls, might be a bit better for beginners. Alsea has a good mix while br is very jump oriented. also bike in bend a lot but the best thing there is the bike park and it won't open for a while. There are some pretty fun trails in bend too (but 80% are boring xc) and good dirt jumps


Yeah black rock was great. A lot of trails are still not open, hiked up and hit that drop before the set up though and that was fun. Banzai from top to bottom was surprisingly fun for both my gf and I. Going to have to come back with the boys and ride some of the blacks and double blacks, I’m very jealous you live so close to there.

r00kieI've always ridden in skate shoes. Only down side was when something broke and had to hike in them for a bit. That sucked.

doubleblackjack1I think i’m just gonna get vans for my next shoes. I have 5 10s and they grip pretty well with nice pedals, but ive heard that they grip the same as vans and skate shoes.


the differences people usually talk about is how much less stiff the soles are in skate shoes compared to mtb shoes, and also skate shoes not being water resistant. it seems like the cons arent worth the price for me at least


I road suede vans for 2 years and skated them a little finally went to shit this spring. Sprayed them with water proofing also. I prefer vans to the new 5 tens. 5 tens quality IMO has gone down the last few years. My dads 4 yearold 5 tens tho are amazing compared to new ones.

CLQYeah black rock was great. A lot of trails are still not open, hiked up and hit that drop before the set up though and that was fun. Glad you liked it! I've been in bend for the last 6 months but gonna go back to corvo for a bit in a week and am stoked to ride there again. I'm super excited to ride the new gk2 as I've been watching it get built for over a year now. Did you check that section out? Also it looked like they upgraded the runaround which was already one of my favorite trails, I'm stoked to check that out. Is the mega wooden step up still fully smashed from the tree or are they trying to rebuild it? I finally sacked up and hit it last fall but really want some more goes when its dry to clean it up. Blackrock is definitely one of the best freeride spots, but unfortunately a lot of the biggest features from the 2000s are falling into disrepair and not getting rebuilt. Ever since the forest service showed up and made them get sanctioned they haven't been allowed to build new jumps over 15 ft, but they're allowed to maintain old ones. I really hope they rebuild the step up as that's the most iconic feature in the whole place, but I'm worried they won't because when the massive road gap after it rotted out a few years ago they didn't rebuild.

Lol I even though about getting low cut steel shank work boots with a flat sole and tarantula grip. Still $120 cheaper than brand name mtb shoes. With a composite toe so they aren't 60 lbs each. More waterproof than canvas skate shoes. Defs won't be breaking toes in those!

Thanks for the info, and hopefully you get to come back and ride the gnarly stuff. I've ridden the (top half of) the runaround a lot, but I think they rebuild it over the winter.

The step up is indeed way bigger in person, I hadn't ridden there in a few months and had hyped myself up to hit it, and when I got back there it was a good deal bigger than in my memory. I went for it anyway, and it was a wet October day so not super fast and my first hit I pedaled for no reason when I was already going super fast and lost a bit of speed to my suspension, and I realized in the air I wasn't gonna make it and I jumped off my bike and landed on my feet on the wood, and my bike fell onto the rocks. I immediately grabbed my bike (which was fine) and went up and hit it again and barely cleared it. About 10 minutes later when the adrenaline wore off I was super sketched out but at the time it was fine. I really really hope they rebuild it so I can get a bit of redemption but I don't know.

FiveTen Stealth soles grip soooooooooo much better than skate shoes/vans. Better than other bike brand soles I've tried, too. I mean, it's basically the same soles as their climbing shoes. I hate wearing my fivetens to bars, because they stick to the grimy floors too much.

And yes stiffness is also important for support and protection. My feet cramp up riding in skate shoes, or even the softer bike shoes like the Freerider FiveTen.

The Freerider Impacts or Freerider Pros are $150 full retail, and you can almost always find them on sale.

On that point any good bike films or edits to watch, I love 50to01 and Brage and some of Remi’s videos along with some stuff a few kids I follow from Squamish make

I ride bmx/mtb exclusively in vans. The normal shoes they make don't have any insole and if you jump down a curb the wrong way you can bruise your feet. It is probably not safe to ride fast/hard in them but for a beginner they are fine. The more pricey "pro" shoes they make cost like $20-$40 more and have robust insoles and generally last about 2x as long as the normal shoes. Recently they have been making bmx specific shoes that I have been riding on my mtb too and I really like them. As long as you don't have to hike with your bike for long distances I think they are fine.

IMO most mtb shoes have too much grip for me. They make doing tricks so much harder. Especially tail whips.

I ride on the Kyle Walker prod and they work well for me. You also get the vans extra cush footbed because they're a skate model.

Just got some 11pine mtb shorts with my lawn mowing money and they were 100% worth it super soft love the stretch and adjustable width in the legs and waist. Always thought mtb specific clothing was a waste beside helmets and gloves but these next level. Testing my new knee pads with these also

Yea I’m a Kona dude but $2500 for a full trail bike was too good of a deal. So fat it rides like a dream.



I still got my Kona 27.5. But I’m about to stop dumping money into that.


anyways this bike is good to get into enduro.

Was a kona dude also but they changed the process Geo and I rly wanted the 420mm chain stays. And I couldn’t get one with the ol covid. Color is sweet on ur bike!

First Ladies Night of the season tonight!

With COVID fears last season I sold my old Big Hit and got a gravel bike instead. Now I have a shiny new Norco Shore and I'm very excited to get back into the park and have a consistent group of women to ride with. Only sad part is we don't get a bar to ourselves for apres two nights a week this year.

Well, looks like I'm gonna get a new bike way sooner than I thought. This years batch of Deore cranks are fucked up, and they are falling off of people's bikes. Some dude bought a Norco Torrent from my shop, put two rides on it, and lost the cranks both times. He raised a huge stink about it, so my boss is buying it back from him. Boss is gonna give me a good deal on it (minus cranks), and I'm picking up a used set of SLX cranks for it tomorrow. Fuckin stoked.

I had some deore cranks last year that had similar problems with falling off. Really ruined a few rides

Bunch of our customers have had that happen. No recall yet, and it's hard as hell to get warranty parts. Feel bad for the dudes who bought those bikes, but I'm stoked to snag a good bike at a discount

Anyone have a YT IZZO? My friends looking for a trail bike and their in stock, he doesn’t think it’s enough travel but he can get it rn and all the trails he rides are XC and machine built flow trails
