I know there are more brown pow lovers on this site, yah there is pinkbike but lets be honest, newshcoolers is wayyyy cooler. so lets posts our rides, questions about components, mechanic questions etc in this thread.

I just bought this beauty and i definitely sacrificed uphill capabiltiy in order to get a beefier dh/park bike. id been on a nomad for a while and it's a huge switch in riding styles for me. definitely getting used to the weight and having to keep speed a lot more.

specs for said beauty, 2011 rc2 dh totem, 2012 dhx rc4, highrollers front and back (gona go dhf front and highroller in the back), mtx 33 wheel set, slx brakes, diablous cranks, FSA 760mm Handlebar, Shimano SLX Shifter & Shimano Deore XT Derailleur.

What am I deflecting? you wrote in rhetorical so I didn't know you were even actually questioning. but incase you really care that much my average screen time is about 3 hours per week, and I ride my bike at least 5 days a week for about 2 ish hours.... so damn I guess you win this one

oh god oh fuck my pride and ego....it hurts... I cant believe I lost a battle to skierman, fuck, what ever will I do now, I gotta quit biking

I think it’s a great way to get better components and suspension than you would on a equivalent priced full sus.

I think they're dope. They're great for everyone from bike nerds who just want an N+1 bike, to someone who wants a quality bike to get into the sport, but don't want to shell out for the price of a full suspension. I also like hardtails because they really keep your skills in check. Full suspensions give you a lot more room for error. You have to pay more attention to line choice and on hardtails.

I like the value aspect of them, I'd rather have solid parts on a 2.5k hardtails, than a 2.5k softtail that's cut a bunch of corners to get the rear shock in. I really like the Norco Sight, but not sure if I can afford to cough up the $$ for one, so a Torrent seems like a good way to get a similarly capable ride for way less.

ThaLoraxI think they're dope. rode a torrent S1 one day last year
As it comes specced, the thing rips. Whoever decided to put a lyric ultimate on a steel hardtail has very sick taste. Also steel frames are the best looking imo

Totally agree with what everyone else said about the value of a hardtail. Slack is the way to go with hardtails since your head angle changes as the fork goes through the travel. I rode one for two years and i learned a lot from riding one, definitely go for it!

Cove used to have a similar suspension layout, I feel like Corsair did too, but I can't find any examples so maybe that's in my head. Sorta driving me crazy because back when I raced NW Cups there were always a few folks on bikes with exactly those lines.

Guess we're not riding Leveritch, that looks fucked. I was always sorta confused living in Bozeman, for a town of almost 50k people, there's not that many good loops that are at all accessible. Plenty of sweet out and backs and point to point rides, but it's obvious your population has overwhelmed what meager access there is haha. Tons of potential though, hope SWMBA can figure out more riding.

Also, unecessary update. Spur continues to fuck, the thing punches well above its weight. Now I've just gotta convince the SO that I should swap my Enduro for a Patrol while she swaps her Bronson for a Sentinel.

It's a Santa Cruz Bullit, I don't know what year. I had a 2009 model that I bought in 2011, it was my first full suspension mountain bike. Hell of a ride!



EDIT: now I am second guessing myself but I always saw that and assumed it was one, disregard my ignorance.

Seems like this is kinda just the way it goes this time of year. Leverich is always going to be super popular, but during early season it gets fucking wrecked, then as the season progresses the hype seems to die down a little bit, and it usually gets to a point that it's so blown out that a lot of people seem to steer clear. It's pretty easy to get bored of it too and a lot of people I know ride it a bunch in the early season and then get sick of it. This year seems especially busy though, and it seems like more and more people hang around at the trailhead for an extra half hour or so shootin the shit and drinkin. It kinda seems like one of the only options for a lot of people looking for a quick after-work ride. With all this heat and crowds I may start trying to get my act together and rising early for a pre-work ride.

I've been talking to the folks at SWMMBA a lot and it seems extremely restrictive to try and get plans for new trails, there is a shitload of red tape around making new trails for any sort of usage. But with all this population growth, there is a lot more money going into SWMMBA, and hopefully land managers and the forest service etc realize that some more effort needs to go into making some new trails.

Truck is priority for me. That way I can get up those gnarly logging roads in winter to go touring

True. Maybe check out the rocky mountain slayer. No idea about stock and dealers near you but jensonusa carries rockys

the cheapest, alloy bike is $3750 and seems to have good enough components

Polygon vander t7 130/130 it wasn’t the bike I wanted but my parents didn’t think it’d be a good idea for a 15yearold to buy a 3800$ bike with his own money even tho I had enough cash and my local shop could get me a Process 153. It’s clapping out even running 140psi in the fork and 220psi in the rear on medium to big hits. Also feels small even tho it’s a large and I’m inbetween a medium and large

Anyone ride in skate shoes ? Mtb shoes literally just look like overpriced glorified skate shoes. Does it even make a difference

i rode in vans for years and did just fine. they fall apart after awhile but they’re cheap. i would sooner invest in a good pair of pedals before buying mtb specific shoes

I think i’m just gonna get vans for my next shoes. I have 5 10s and they grip pretty well with nice pedals, but ive heard that they grip the same as vans and skate shoes.


the differences people usually talk about is how much less stiff the soles are in skate shoes compared to mtb shoes, and also skate shoes not being water resistant. it seems like the cons arent worth the price for me at least

I've always ridden in skate shoes. Only down side was when something broke and had to hike in them for a bit. That sucked.
