my biggest concern in grade 8 was finding somebody with a link cable and a blue version of pokemon that i could trade with.

i was badass as fuck with my red gameboy and red version of pokemon.

15 inch = overkill
16gb RAM = major overkill (a highscooler doesn't need more than 4gb really, I have 8gb and can easily run FCP 7, excel, traktor, chrome, photoshop all under 4gbs at the same time)
Graphics card that gnarly = overkill

In a serious answer, I have a Lenovo B570 and I love it, and it's an affordable computer, too, other than the fact that it functions well.

dont waste your money on a mac in high school... Like everyone else is saying, you don't even need a laptop in high school and if they are requiring you to get one, just get something that is solid and cheap and will last you until college when you actually do need one.

not necessarily. I would never go back to a 13" screen. the 15" retina mbp is less bulky than most 13" laptops anyways.

osx sucks, but they make nice hardware. yes it has soldered ram and costs more than other companies, but you also don't get a loud, bulky, plastic piece of shit. Even if the specs are just as good, basically nothing competes with the MBP (except possibly this new MSI computer, which just came out). No one else has figured out how to cram a high end computer into basically an ultrabook case.

well 90% of the population aren't recommending a $2,500 laptop to a highschool student. Like if its a requirement and the most he will probably be doing is browsing reddit and writing papers, I think its a bit of overkill especially when you look into the kinds of abuse it will be getting as well.

Then again my laptop is old as fuck and dying so I built a desktop for my interests and then use the laptop as a reddit machine which pretty much any potato can do at this point.

The thing about Apple products in general is that they don't go out of date quickly. Yeah, they're expensive... But you'll have that thing for years, I guarantee it. And I was joking when I posted the screenshot of the MacBook, there are much more reasonable (hint: refurbished) options available from the MacBook line.

plenty of private boarding schools require students to have laptops. mine required each student to have some kind of personal computer but not specifically a laptop.

In all seriousness use fucking paper and get a chromebook for cheap as shit for the bare basics (google docs and email/facebook/whatever the fuck else
there is literally zero chance you need anything more than that for highschool. Unless you want to spend money pointlessly in which case buy this puppy:

assuming this is serious, but if not, disregard the following rant...

the MacBook Pro I mentioned earlier has 16GB of SDRAM, more hard drive storage, a better display, better battery life, is better looking (imo), runs quieter, and is over five grand cheaper. Then you can spend the leftover money on whatever you want, such as Parallels, so you can run Windows games on Steam, a killer display, speakers, and whatever the hell you want. That way you get an insane laptop plus a mad gaming setup for home... if you can point out a single flaw, go ahead, cause I sure as hell can't.

Need some more details man. Does you school require it to be a Windows machine? Do you plan on gaming with it (if so what games)? What's your budget? Be a little more specific so people don't post that you need to buy $2500 overpriced shit... oh wait

It also depends on if you will only be using this laptop for school, if so you don't really need anything super powerful and expensive, but if you want to game on it then you should get something with at least 6 gb of ram and a decent graphics card.

It was a joke but I have to agree macbooks are fucking indestructable and just work well. Overpriced as shit, but my good friend's had his since like 2009 and it still works great. Definitely worth the money compared to getting like 2 pc laptops for half that price that will die within a few years. If you want to run anything that actually requires hard computing (eg games/rendering/etc) just build a desktop and keep it at home. But being in eighth grade I doubt thats the case. Feel like a used macbook pro from before they forced soldered ram would be good, then you could get a SSD and/or replace the CD drive with another disk, replace and upgrade ram, etc.

Laptops don't last much more than 4 years anyway, man. The rate at which techs advancing is intense. Laptops intrinsically cannot last a long time, both because they break all over the place and because it'll be obsolete by that point anyway.

this is not really true anymore. It once was (90's-mid 2000's) but these days you can expect a good computer to last you quite a long time. smartphones on the other hand, not so much.

smartphone/tablets are actually part of the reason why your laptop will last longer now than ever (for day to day stuff). lots of software is being developed for these lower powered computers, and it will be a long time before they catch up to a good laptop
