Anyone here read Vice Magazine? I feel as though the amount of people who read it in my age group is limited yet I'm a huge fan. Just wanna see what NS says.
Many of their documentaries are overly-sensational, show a tenuous uninformed grasp of the situations/backgrounds that they are documenting and in some cases are plain insulting and exploitative. They are often more interested in the experiences of the "journalist" as opposed to the actual situations. They should call them investigative travelogues.
like the drug guy who is usually so fucked up he doesnt know what hes doing. It would be pretty amazing if some really good journalists were given the same opportunities as half of them. So many are uncultured too, I feel like they don't know how to act around local people
I feel as though many of their documentaries are really interesting to watch, but the articles on the website are usually just complete trash and not worth reading. Especially ones involving politics.
^ This. They have awesome videos. Lots of things from parts of the world you never really hear about in the mainstream news. The HBO series was well done also. Stories are not very good and can be somewhat boring and hard to get through.
But it seems to me they are more pre-occupied with the act of performing gonzo journalism instead of actual gonzo journalism. And whilst they can surely be entertaining I just hope no one uses their 'documentaries' as a legitimate source of information.
Could you provide examples of your criticisms? I personally like vice, it's certainly not my only source of news, but it frequently has a different perspective to other sites and I generally enjoy their somewhat irrevent style.
A lot of their interviews and journalism are purely based on some random "informant" claiming this or that without any factual solidity to back up their claims.
http://noisey.vice.com/blog/phish-has-been-a-band-for-thirty-years-now-and-they-have-sucked-the-whole-time It was actually noisey, which is owned by vice.
Vice has very poor journalism, from very questionable "facts" from "experts" to an exceptionally poor reputation for having an extreme bias in almost every one of their articles. I truly hope everyone who reads anything they put out to understand it is about as fact worthy as a fiction novel.
