Going to get a new car and wasn't really to sure wanted to get some of NS opinons since this is right up your ally. I want to get a midsize truck don't need even close to a full size truck. Im looking to drop around $30k on one of these. Pretty much ruled out the frontier i think its a pretty inferior truck. But wanted to get NS's opinion o the new gm mid size trucks coming out soon. The tacoma is rediculously reliable and always a solid pick in this class, but if I had the choice I would rather buy american but the problem is the last go around of mid size trucks from gm and ford absolutely sucked.

In my opinion the Tacoma is a way better truck. The ecoboost has more power than the 4.0, but its also heavier, and that's about the only advantage as far as I'm concerned.

wait it out man. the new colorado will have a smaller duramax in it for 2014. 2.8l i think? it'll be able to tow what you need and it'll get way better mileage than 1/4 ton right now.

I should have googled this before I posted...it looks like they made be made in Texas now? Or California...either way-- look into it OP, they aren't made in Japan.

My dad owns a Tacoma. Thing is powerful and way fast for it's size. Plus he towed around my siblings's broken down cars with no problems at all. The traction control is phenomenal in slick conditions as well.

Toyota's are not at all what they used to be. Look up TSB's for the 2005+ Tacoma's. I was going to get a newer Tacoma until I looked closer. The plastic beds? Seriously? I think they lost a few hundred pounds of payload capacity going to that shit. Not to mention someone can literally steal the tailgate from your truck in less than 10 seconds.

And Toyota and Nissan have manufacturing plants in the US. My Nissan was produced in Tennessee I believe.

The only benefit in my mind going with a newer Toyota would be the resale value; otherwise I'd buy something else...or an old Toyota.

Yes I did indeed. Ended up holding out declined offer they came back to me and begged me to accept it I told them I had another job lined up paying way more and then they got me a raise but ended up taking an offer doing energy project valuations specifically in oil and gas and metal industries in nyc. Way better pay and better opportunities down the road

Do this, OP. Maybe even the Nissan, too. The "American" companies generally make shit mid-size.

Save yourself some cash on the down payment, and put it towards some gangster ass mods or cab goodies.

that's not an 88, they didn't have the newer body style until  1989.5, and the 85's are the more sought after older ones because of solid front axles-- otherwise people use conversion kits-- off road speaking, but the 88-89s have the v6 so that is niiiiice to have.

I don't have a pic of the 1985, but it was a blue 4x4 xtra cab. I like the t100s, but I would stay away from 1995s...4runners anyway because there was a head gasket problem/recall that year if I remember correctly.

just get a full-size, you won't regret it. way more cab room, comparable mileage, and way more power. my first silverado (still have it) has over 220k miles and i haven't done anything beside replace u joints and an alternator. my newer chevy runs great and get around 18mpg. toyota's are way overpriced and overrated imo

not everyone takes them in, though. It mainly rings a bell to me because my brother bought a 1995 4runner in 2003-4ish, and the head gasket blew. When he took it into the shop he found out about the previous recall.

Toyota makes the best small(ish) pickup truck period. The original Pickup/Hilux is essentially what gave them the reputation, and the 1st gen Tacoma is almost equally bombproof. I had a 1996 and now own a 2001 Tacoma. Love it. The new ones are also pretty nice, although I think they are too big and have too many electronic things. Aside from that the 1GR-FE is a very good V6 engine and the 6spd manual is an appropriate transmission for it. I have driven a 4Runner, Highlander, and Tacomas with manual and auto transmissions with forms of that V6 engine and have been impressed each time.

That being said, it looks like the reintroduction of the GM smaller pickup will have the option of a diesel engine. If it was straight GM petrol vs Toyota petrol, I say Toyota 100/100 times. But if you are willing to put out for the diesel, and no doubt it will cost more, than I would advise to take a very long look at it before picking a Tacoma. Obviously I have never driven it though so I couldn't offer real advice.

On a side note I can't understand why Toyota has not introduced diesel options into the North American market for the Tundra/Sequoia/4Runner and Tacoma/Highlander vehicles. Besides perhaps the emissions laws created by the People's Republic of California (and subsequently adopted by other states), it is quite frustrating. The 4.4L V8 TD and 3.0 I4 TD engines already exist elsewhere and are wonderful. I drove both of them in Australia on an FJ78 and Hilux, respectively. The year that Toyota brings them to North America is the year that they become the undisputed #1 car company in the world in my mind.

I do get what you're saying, though, but they stopped honoring the recall in 2006 from what I could google. I didn't know much about the recall or the head gasket problem, but its kind of a serious problem and worth making note of if looking for that gen of 4runner-- it can lead to problems elsewhere, too. I would just know that if I were looking at buying one, I would research the shit out of it, and the records on the car I was buying, too.

the second-gen tacomas are just not as good as the legendary toyota trucks that preceeded them. Plus the colorado is so much better than the s-10's were. Apparantly GM is reintroducing it and adding a 2.8L turbodiesel, which is fucking rad. Basically the chevy is a true rival to the toyotas now.

my question is why would you get a small truck, when the 1/2 gets basically the same fuel economy? (assuming you are looking at the 6 cyl)

30k truck on a 45k salary.... don't do it man. I remember my first real job, I bought a ton of toys, a motorcycle, a boat, an suv to pull the boat. That shit's fleeting. save all your money for an early semi-retirement at 30 when you get sick of the fuckin' grind

15s wont be out until around September sometime. The next year's models usually become available in late summer/early fall.

OP I was in a similar situation 18 months ago, ended up going with the Tundra, bigger more comfortable cab, better interior, more powerful, about the same fuel economy as the Taco, worse by 2 or 3 MPGs, and most importantly...the ENTIRE back window rolls down. By far the best feature of any vehicle ever.

Love that truck.

All TRD Tacomas come with the SR5 power package.

I would recommend the TRD Off Road package over the Sport package. The former has an electric locking rear dif, while the latter has a rear limited slip and a fake hood scoop.

You can't get a double cab long bed off road, doesn't exist. That's why I got the sport, pictured above actually. I mean yeah the trim package is kind of pointless but how much sense does it make to buy a truck with a bed too small to fit a pair of skis in it?

Agreed. Thanks for the compliment, and yeah this is what my/our truck is...but its either TRD off-road, or TRD sport, not both.

For OP, the differences are basically:

Sport is the only one that comes in a long bed. Additionally, the sport has: hood scoop, different seats, 17" wheels, different tires, color-matched bumpers and grill, different suspension, and auto locking rear differential.

Off-road has: no hood scoop, chrome bumpers and grill, different seats, short bed, push-button locking rear differential, off road suspension, 16" wheels.

Both are great. We wanted the sport for the full sized bed.

Tundra also: comes in leather and has a sun/moon roof. Neither are available in the tacoma.

yeah, its a huge car payment. We bought the newer one I posted (the black tacoma) for 31k, our monthly payment is $526.00 on a 5 year loan. We bought it used-- it is a 2010, in May of 2012. It had 6k miles on it.

As much as I want to buy a tacoma, they're so expensive used. Looking at spending around 10k, and where I live that would buy me a 2002 with almost 200 000km, but looking at a frontier at the same price range and it's anywhere from 2004-2008 and much less milage. Obviously I would have to test drive both and see what I prefer. Hell even early 90s toyota pickups with close to 400 000 km are still 5 grand where I live.
