Sochi Olympics getting all too sketchy

I read the whole thing about terrorists attacking another bus and killing tons of people in Russia, which made me think of the upcoming Sochi Olympics in general. Isn't it actually pretty dangerous to send all the Athletes from different countries to Russia as terrorist attacks become more of a norm nowadays?

I cant believe that "Doku Umarov, the leader of an umbrella Islamist organization known as the Caucasus Emirate, had previously called on his followers to use “maximum force” to prevent the Winter Olympics from taking place."

I'm guessing that Russia is using all their forces to prevent another attack but cmon, it's getting really sketchy out there and I am starting to worry about all the athletes getting ready to compete there. Was it really necessary to hold the Olympics in Russia?

Apparently, "For Moscow, the Sochi Winter Olympics are a matter of prestige; of showing the world what Russia can do."

What do you guys think of this?

I'm going and am a bit scared. My wife is going over before me and will be there before opening ceremonies and that is what I am really worried about.

If they don't want the games to happen, they will try to start heavy and hard from the get go.

hopefully the terrorist/rebels are smart enough to know the difference between hitting a Russian target vs a global target.  If they attack the Olympics directly, it will probably unite the global community against the terrorist/rebel group regardless of their cause.  Either way I hope thier is peace there.

Tangent, but I was talking to a buddy of mine whose parents are Russian and he has helped out the Russian Ski Team when they were in the U.S. Apparently Sochi was pretty much built from scratch for the Olympics and will most likely just be abandoned after the games. Even though it is apparently gorgeous being so close to the water, it is not convenient to any large populated area.

It's considered sub-tropical, so it is a summer resort, but my friend doubted whether enough people would venture there for skiing. The majority of Russians will ski Europe or it is actually cheaper for them to fly to the U.S. or Canada. Anyway, this is what my friend was saying, and on this subject I completely believe him.

I definitely think security will be a serious concern. Raadical groups from the Caucus which cause the two recent bombings will most likely be unable to carry out an attack on the Olympics, however.

The Caucasus Mountains are a huge mountain range on the border of Georgia and Russia. Sochi is right on the coastal border of the beginning of the Caucasus range. It geographically similar to the equivalent of having the Winter Olympics in Seattle. Except it's Russsia.

Powder mag did a really good article on skiing Mestia, Georgia a few years back. The skiing and scenery looked phenomenal and the snow appeared to be very, very deep. It's a shame the area has the troubles it does because I feel like it would be up there with Japan as far as elusive pow skiing destinations go.

Clearly you're unfamiliar with the two costly wars russia painfully waged with chechnya in the nineties. They don't fuck around... You can go to liveleak and see the beheadings and torture for yourself.

I'm dissapointed in the IOC and russia. Sochi? Really? Lol

Thank god now I will be able to buy a lavish condo for my favourite ski resort once the games are over, and cook Krokodil to all the athletes that fail at getting a podium finish. It will be one big soviet party again.

Sochi and the surrounding areas will be on a full out military lockdown.

If there is an attack it will happen on softer targets in other parts of the country

Sochi is a pretty big city/area, and that is right there.

The ski area is Rosa Khutor, which is inland a bit from the city area

You are correct with the place was pretty much built from scratch. Russia dumped a lot of money into it. 40 rope way systems from Doppelmayr including one of the longest and fasted gondolas in the world. SMI put in all the snowmaking with 100+ fans and 12,000 gmp system. Insane. Not to mention all the hotel and road infrastructure. Already over $40b in costs and that is just still going up.

Not to mention the weather is wack in that region. One system will come in with 5' of snow, next systemwill be 2" of rain. The snow storage they have in place is one of kind. That has never been done before and is quite impressive.

Also the main venue for bumps/arias/pipe is awesome. Such a good layout.

I could go on and on, but all I can say is I am very curious to see how it all plays out once they games start.
