ABasin: Pulling Passes for Pot.

Hey there all! For most in Colorado, I am sure you follow Al's ABasin Blog.. if anything to get updates on early season fun. Anyways, I have been enjoying reading this latest post by Al which focuses on the use of weed on the mountain. From his claim, ABasin has been pulling passes of a few "offenders". I am hoping this is not completely true and he is just using a scare tactic, but regardless this seems to be a pretty strong action considering the amount of people hammered at the bar, liftline, parking lot, whatever.

Knowing there is a pretty healthy weed smoking population here on NS I thought it would be interesting to see what all had to say. Has their been issues like this at your mountain?

Fuck a whole bunch of the shit. They can suck my cock on that one. It's legal in the state and nothing says it's illegal there. But be smart about it, don't do it in the parking lot or lift or anywhere easily seen or smelled. Do it in the woods or in a shack.

Their basis is on the portion of A64 which still states smoking weed in PUBLIC to be illegal. Which I totally get. I could understand some issues if people are going to town around some little kids working on their power wedge.. but I have yet to see anything like that.

For the most part I feel pulling passes already for this is pretty damn extreme.

I know all you pot head jibber punks think it is OK to just burn one down anywhere anytime, but there is this thing called the real world, and you can't do that.

It's not legal, is a business, you get in trouble for doing illegal things....

There were at least 2-3 people smoking in the trees at any given time. I'm not against weed or the legalization of it, but turning public places into smoke spots is not cool. Which of you fuckers were doing it in the trees.

It's only legal by the state. Any federal law enforcement agent can ticket you like any other drug,even in Colorado.

Abasin can pull your pass for whatever god dam reason they want, and smoking weed on their land is a pretty good reason.

They can do whatever the fuck they want when you are on their land.

What they should be more concerned about though is the people getting shitface drunk on the beach and then driving home on loveland pass going 90 and almost crashing into my car right after I fucking got it last year.

i dont call into question abay's right to do this, but i do question their reasoning, seems a little fucked they are doing what they are doing when people are slamming beers in the parking lot/lift line/lift. Its one of those situations where i say "okay, but seriously?" It is pretty hypocritical of A-Bay. When people complain about people drinking beer in the parking lot, abay says fuck off. but when they complain about kids smoking pot, they make a blog post and pull passes.

also, I don't see why people can't seem to understand when a vape would be ideal if you really need to get high in a public place. Hell, I know dumbass kids who get high in small classrooms with very few people noticing with the use of a pen vape.

I think this is where I am coming from on this. ABasin can do whatever they want and I have no qualms with it. It is their mountain! I was more surprised on the pretty quick (and what I think is extreme) measure considering the party vibe that ABasin generally likes to portray.

meh, in their blog and on facebook they use the term "beach season" which is directly related to partying in the parking lot. they may not precisely say come drink in our parking lot, but they imply it.

Give me one reason Abay would want people illegally smoking in public. I can give you plenty of reasons they'd let people get drunk on the beach and spend money at the bar/on passes.

This no doubt, If Al could open up a million dollar a year smoking bar or whatever shit weed would be welcomed with open arms, right now they are just trying to portray a family friendly image.

I would also add that as long as you aren't an asswipe with your smoke they won't bother you.

Which is extremely stupid, especially early season. The group of people that goes to a-basin to ski a single, icy run packed with other skiers is definitely not made up of a lot of families and children, but mostly park rats, people seeking the party vibe, and locals who live in the summit county area. A large portion of these people are supportive of marijuana or at least tolerant and there is simply no reason for a-basin to make a big deal out of it.

look. as a fellow Coloradan. I understand both sides. I understand that Abasin doesn't want people smoking bud on their land. However, they DEFINITELY do portray the lifestyle of partying while skiing. As someone who doesn't really party very much, the fact that the idea of "the beach" exists, proclaims party all day. The parking lot is full of people I know who party all the time, they have always been able to. If you are going to stop people from smoking bud, you have to stop them from all of it.

Why is it shocking? I mean fuck, all my riding has been in states where weed is illegal, some of the mountains that drug test employees etc. People smoke there as well.


If you're not able to find a place to smoke on a fucking mountain because a few people might pull your pass you're retarded.

They can do what they want. It's legal in colorado it's not legal to simply smoke it where ever you want. Beer is legal but you aren't allowed to drink it in public everywhere. Even if a state had no open container law, a business could still make you leave for drinking on it's property.

How hard is that for people to understand?

I understand they have every right to do so, I just wish they would embrace weed becoming more mainstream rather than fighting it. They don't have a problem with having a beer in the lodge during lunch and going back out, I don't think they should have a problem with blazing in the woods/away from others...I mean for fucks sake in the spring people get hammered on the beach and go take laps, surely that is more dangerous.

This has absolutely nothing to do with it. I don't understand why kids keep comparing weed to alcohol. Just read the fucking law, it really isn't that hard. You cannot smoke weed in public places, period. It doesn't matter if weed is more "mainstream" or if it's becoming more culturally acceptable. It's fucking illegal in public. That means if Abasin has rangers or any federal officers on the slopes and morons are smoking weed publicly, ABASIN is now liable. Why would Abasin be willing to risk federal penalties for some dumbfuck 20 year old's $269 pass?

Seriously, stop comparing it to alcohol. The law is not the same, period. If you get pulled over in your car with an open bottle, the law says it is illegal. Would you start whining that drinking while driving is "mainstream" so it would be really cool if authorities would stop enforcing the law that says you can't drink and drive?

This new 16-24 group of skiers has some fucking idiots in it.

that's not the point. the point is that they made s big enough deal to make a blog post about smoking weed I'm public but made no mention of the much larger number of people drinking in the lot, on the lift and I'm the lift lines at A Basin. If you're going to make an example out of one you have to do it for both since neither can legally be drank I'm public. however, they make money off Alcohol sales and that'll never happen.

You can sell, serve, or consume alcohol on federal property, provided the establishment has a permit. Guess what Abasin has? A permit.

So again, stop comparing weed to alcohol. The law is not the same. Jesus.

"ControversialWell that last post certainly generated some conversation. As I wrote it I knew it would be controversial. The new law is creating changes and adjustments. The wide breadth of all our comments shows what a complicated issue this is in our culture. While there were people supportive of my comments, others were deeply offended. A couple of people asked me to do things that are anatomically impossible. I think the debate is rich and we are all better for it. Between this blog and Facebook, hundreds of people weighed in. Those comments certainly triggered many thoughts with me. Here are just a few.

Regarding the guys who lost their passes, my comments were a bit heavy. When I came upon them they were smoking a joint at the top of the lift with a bunch of kids nearby. I think most people would agree with me that they needed to go away for a while.

I sincerely apologize to anyone I offended. That was not my intention. Many people read things into my comments that were not there. If I could rewrite my post, it would simply read, "Colorado's new law legalizes limited marijuana use. Consumption in public is not allowed. A-Basin is a public place."

That said, I am confident we can keep the vibe and the culture of A-Basin alive. I hope we can all enjoy this great place realizing the new law does not allow people to smoke pot in the lift lines, on the deck, in the restaurant, and other public places. I hope all of you will keep skiing and riding at The Basin."

Hey Mr. Thick Skull. I'm not about to read through a 190 page federal document but I'm talking about the parking lot and the lift line/lift itself. I'm 99% sure it is absolutely not legal to drink in the lot, in the lift line, on the lift, or in the woods. That is all public. A Basin's liquor license is for the building only. You cannot bring alcohol beyond the building. What I'm saying is that if you are smoking in the parking lot, it should be treated the same way as alcohol UNTIL it is fully legalized in January. Then, it should be treated like cigarettes, which is what the town of Breckenridge is doing.


Now please reach down into your pants and unbunch those panties that you forgot to change when you woke up this morning. I don't see the logic in why you're freaking out over the distinction.
