I wasn't referring to deductions but that is an even better point than I was trying to make. If you receive $100K as income as part of being a pro skier you can deduct your expenses that are involved being a pro skier (ie. travel, lift tickets, supplies, etc.). This lowers your taxable income and lowers your tax liability. However, I think that point would be irrelevant because those costs should have already been deducted.

The point I am making is effective rate vs. marginal rate. Given the progressive structure of US tax you are not taxed at 28% on every dollar you earn. You are only taxed 28% on every dollar earned once you are in that bracket. Your income that falls in lower brackets is taxed at lower rates. If you would like further explanation I would be happy to do so when I am not at work being an accountant.

What I am saying is that I'm pretty sure contest winnings are not treated as ordinary business income, but more like a taxable windfall. Otherwise, I as a Canadian could rely on the tax treaty and not be subject to withholding tax. I don't think it works that way, is what I'm saying.

Yeah prize winnings definitely don't fall into that category. Since he takes it as a lump sum, its essentially like a bonus at work. The tax on your bonus is calculated separate from your income - they calculate the bonus as if it were one payment of the corresponding yearly salary so your tax rate is way higher.

For example - as an intern, I make roughly $800 a week, for 3 months. But I pay the taxes equivalent to making $800/week for an entire year. So his taxes will be paid based off the assumption that his "bonus" is his weekly/biweekly check - thus extremely high.

Maybe you don't, but I would definitely consider Dale to be in the "new generation" of skiers.

Dale will do whatever the hell he wants with the money. However, what I would like to see him do with the money is invest back into 4bi9 to making them have a greater reach.

Honestly I probably would give 10 percent to the videographer and editor. And probably 20 percent or more to 4bi9 and the rest just use for hookers and blow.

yea, the thing is there doesn't need to be money in it. People who are passionate will create regardless of financial compensation. The only monetary value in art is commercialization, or to show opulence.

I read the other day on either Freeskier, or the Collab website (forget which) that the Collab contest was created with the intent of getting the biggest pros to enter. they thought the 100K prize would do that. and though some big names entered, it was mostly more unknown people
