Hey guys,

I've been getting a lot of messages and reading a bunch of posts about the lack of news on the NS home page and just wanted to shed some light on the situation.

- First off, if you want to take a look at the top rated news at the moment, just head on over here https://www.newschoolers.com/news?c=toprated

- Secondly, news will only make it to the home page if it's popular -- so make sure to upvote something if you like it. Right now there's a few really interesting articles in the system that are worth a read, but nothing is getting the upvotes needed to make the jump to the home page.

- Last but not least... Do something about it! The news system is open to everyone, whether you be an athlete, photographer, writer, brand, resort, media, etc. Every single member has the power to upload a news article. We'll be running contests and initiatives in the near future to promote better content, but the exposure a well-written and researched piece can garner is pretty big. That's basically how I earned my writing chops and made the connections that got me where I am today.

I fully understand what your saying, but again I think you have misunderstood what I was trying to say. Let me try again. If I only have chance to read one article I want to know that the article I am reading is of the most interest to me. Currently with the upvote system I am basing that decision on what previous readers have thought. Now it may just be that the article has just appeared and 2 people have just upvoted it. It may also have just had a lot of upvotes by the contributor and there friends. Unfortunately the story does not get truly rated until it has been here a while and perhaps then may even be out of date.

But I fear all this may be for nothing. The mentality certainly seems to be that as a group things can be done better. And im fine with that. As you say why change a site just so I prefer it, well I would like that but of course thats me. I just thought I would give my views, just as you give yours.

I can also identify with that sentiment, however I don't really agree that it's all that big of a deal. I also feel that although an editor could wade through the crap and find the great articles, just one person's idea of what's hot and what's crap isn't likely to please everyone. Also editors cost money. By leaving it up to the masses to rate, we are keeping it on an even playing field so to speak. Sure, it leaves the news susceptible to fanboyism but that will never go away.

I say leave it, but give it a few tweaks to make it more of a daily-look thing for forum browsers.

like i said in your other thread, i think purely concerning news and written content in general, i think we need to take a step back and have (an) editor(s) select which content needs to be on the homepage

and secondly, bring back the old news window which automatically scrolls through the 10 most recent articles that got featured on the homepage ...

just my 0.02$ though ....

NS news is pretty dead imho, even when you bring up good articles to prove me wrong, it's just not a thriving interface ...

while I somewhat agree (and some of what i'm saying is just going to be me thinking out loud),
what do you think is missing? Is there GOOD news that is being reported and being skipped over? Or is there just not good news being created?

the content itself is pretty decent i think, it's just the interface that is unbalanced....

something needs to change to bring more traffic to the news and make written content more accessible/appealing ....

And to expand on that a bit more, why limit editors as only NS employees? You can also have a new weekly guest editor (pro skier, ski company owner, etc...) feature content that they think is relevant.

eh, to a degree I agree with you, but I believe there's room for both. Most people miss the news on the site because there's a thread Steve Stepp started that has 300 people posting like wild in it and that replaces a killer photo gallery that Will Wesson did on ESPN. Ok, so you're not a Will fan and NS favors him, there are stories out there that are more important than the latest internet fight, lol, or whatevs moment.

That being said, I posted three stories in the News today in the effort to help Jason get the news going here. We'll see what happens.

While we're on the subject of news.

If I click an article and discover it's linking me to another page, I'll almost instantly leave, simply because of how little space you have to read the article with all the intrusions of the ns banners. Blue is all you get to see of the news article itself:

Kids don't have the attention span to click on the news button when there are picture and videos in front of their face on the home page. News won't ever be popular again. Just another reason why the new homepage format sucks dick and I wish it hadn't been changed.

I also agree with the guy that said it should be more like pinkbike. They have some really quality news and gear reviews on their site.
