College kids....is it dirtbag to throw your partner under the bus in a group project who didn't do shit?

So im in this class with this kid get paired up with this total schmuck....kid barelly shows up to class. We need to do a data collection project and then do a presentation on it.

He did 15% of all the data entries collected I did everything basically.

The things he did do were horrendous and I had to go back and fix them all.

Kid got a borderline failing grade on mid term while I had second highest grade in the class...it was open notebook mid term which shows how stupid this kid is.

Wants to do the presentation the day before its due.


Should I go and talk to the teacher and tell him he didnt do shit on the project and I deserve a better grade than him if he brings our project down? What do you all think. And btw im not even close to friends with this kid never met him before this class so I dont care if I never talk to him again.

Throw him under the bus 100%. You and your family are (presumably) the ones paying for your education. This is the time to put in a lot of work to try for a better lifestyle later on.

Don't let some fuck who doesn't care about his chance for higher education bring you down man.

I've been in the same situation a couple of times before and I didn't tell the teacher. I think that if you guys are doing a presentation, it will be pretty clear to the teacher that you did the work while he did nothing. A big part of college is learning how to work with people, and I know a lot of teachers will tell you tough shit if you go complain to them about your group.

Plus at the end of the day, there's going to be a final that he'll most likely fail, so it's not like he's going to ace the class because of the project or anything. His grade will work itself out.

This is my thoughts thanks for confirming.

I pay for my college (which is expensive 50+ year) on my fucking own, bust my ass maintain a GPA around 3.4 in a STEM major. I hate group projects for this reason cause you getp aired up with some fuck face who doesn't do shit and ruins your grade.

This class isn't even in my major was just an interesting clsas I had to take as an elective which i thought would be interesting. Never realized criminal justice majors in general were so fucking stupid and the classes were so dam easy.

Good man. If there's one thing I learned in college it is that there are ALWAYS kids who simply don't give a fuck. I will never understand it but whatever.

Whenever you find yourself in these situations, look out only for YOU. Don't let some lazy punkass be a deciding factor in your future. YOU are all that matters when it comes to YOUR education. Good luck

i would talk to him first, i've did a ton of projects right before they were due and also got good grades. kid sounds like a dumbass though.

I'm a TA and although my department does not usually ever assign group work, I have talked with TAs in other departments that have. Professors and TAs like to know when people tell them how the other group members did, otherwise they would give grades those students are undeserving of.

Let us know what the professor said.

Will do. Thanks for the reaffirmation. I emailed the teacher and told him basically I did the entire data collectoin and want to be graded for what I did, and not have this fuck face ride his grade off of my work.

If he really deserves it and was just lazy about collecting the data and doesn't care then I'd let the Prof/TA know first off, maybe tell him if he doesn't get his shit together you're going to the professor.

I got fucked over in a group project in my freshman earth science class because I was stuck working and couldn't make it to any of the meetings. Then they decided to change our project halfway through to something that I didn't agree with. I went to the professor and told him and let me re-do it on my own

if hes doing it on purpose and just checking out how far he can go, obviously you should do something about it and at least inform the teacher.

but if hes just lazy and/or has other things to do (i had that several times where guys who worked legitly before didnt have time because of other courses and shit) try to solve the problem with him. maybe the kid has some problems going on right now and just needs a hand.



in the end, i have done so much work because others didnt want to or werent able to, but imo, these guys wont go far in their lifes anyway. but there are guys who will sit there and complete a teamwork on their own because another fucker isnt doing a thing, these are quality guys. maybe too nice to be successful in our greedy and competition world, but good people. and then there are the guys who would throw him under the bus in any scenario, these guys probably will be successful later but noone will like them. thats really my opinion on it.

I see what your saying...but when it comes down to it if you aint first your last. If your not going to do a project? Well than fuck you I did all the work im getting all the credit. Your analogy of being "successful" in lfe really doesn't make sense. I know plenty of nice guys who make lots of money in the corporate world. Greed is just this mega excuse for people who can't make it or don't like things the way they are.

If I can get a B- on this project (25%) of the grade because I didn't tell the prof that he didnt do shit, or I can do as much as I can and do it on my own and get an A well then fuck this kid. Worth it in my eyes I pay for my own college and work full time and still maintain a 3.3-3.4 in a STEM major. People who say they work to much or dont have the time don't have their priorities set straight

I had to do this once, me and this person got paired with this girl who just sits in the corner and does nothing. We talked about the project once in class, then she never said or did anything, ignored our emails (she claimed she never got them) and did absolutely nothing. 5 minutes before the presentation we told her what to say and she even fucked that up by just saying I don't know.

So we talked to our teacher, and he bumped our 75's up to 100's, and subtracted the 50 points off her 75.
So yes, If it's your grade that matters, at least try to explain to the teacher that they aren't really helping.

obviously there are exceptions but i remember in a personal management class i heard about a study where "they" found a significant positive correlation between "unfriendliness" and career success.

it was explained with the fact that bosses are more likely to promote people who they think can make "tough" decisions and arent blinded by unneeded emotions.



i am a finance major myself (you too if i remember correctly) and i cant think of more than 2 or 3 guys in my class i would want on my company. too many of them are too egoistical and unsocial.

and it all comes down to what your definition of "first" and "last" is. and i dont think that we share that opinion, so do whatever you think is right, i respect that.

Criminal justice majors I know, not all, but a good majority of them dick around in class so much. Chew in class, don't take notes, get D-Fs on tests. Like why would you dick around in a class that's you're fucking major? Pisses me off so much that they want to go into "law enforcement" yet don't give two shits in core criminal law classes. /rant

I can agree with you on some of what you said...but idk man. I am the nicest kid in the world. Never have beef with anyone really at all, amf riendly to anyone I meet, and have delt with pain in the ass bosses and co workers before.

I am nice to the kid and don't have any problem with him. What I do have a problem with is that this kid slacks off to no end which would ultimately hold me down. Im not getting held back by some kid I randomly got paired up with.

Anyways I emaield the prof and he said that he realized I was a much better student that this kid and that I would get more credit for the work that I did. So its all good now.


Any you mention your a finance major. Any idea what field or what your trying to get into within finance?

Its quite simple, credit him for the work he did. If he did shit, its plagiarism and the professor should be notified.
But in the real world, lazy people will always get away with it.

i obviously dont know you, i was just talking about my experiences. might be totally different, also probably differing from country to country.

idk, i might be going for a Phd since i am kind of undecided. i dont like a lot of the "typical careers" in finance and it will also be decided by what kind of stuff is available around here (south germany/austria).



but i am a big fan of "modern" models erasing the normal distribution out of finance. actually, me and a friend have small plans to start a risk management company based on fractals and neural networks instead of simple monte-carlo analysis and general VaR. if thats not working, i would like to get into a financial department of a company that i have some kind of connection to.

right now i am writing my masters thesis on IPO valuation with self-organizing maps and "regular" classifier neural networks. spend an afternoon on our bloomberg terminal this week and hopefully i find a predictor with 51%+ accuracy.

Don't try to come off as too entitled to your prof. Just be honest and explain to them the situation without asking for anything right away.

But yeah, do what you gotta do man. Your partner knows he didn't do most of the work, he's just looking for an easy way through the class.

I think there is a time and a place for saying something. Every group project I've had has had the opportunity to evaluate your partner and the work they did.

There will be times in your career when you have to collaborate with others. Your boss won't care who put the work in as long as its done. If you are the one doing the work and its quality, they'll notice.

dam man PHD respect. If you got a PHD in finance...idk how it is over in Europe but over hear in the states you can get a job at a hedgfund or a long/short equity fund as a trader or something along those lines making BANK. I know a PHD finance student from a pretty solid university who made ~400k out of his program

idk anyone who has a phd who isnt at the university personally, so i dont really know, but it should result in a legit job (my university is mediocre, nothing bad and nothing great). although US and especially UK would be probably a lot better, but who knows, maybe i can go there for a few years afterwards.

obviously its tough and its not sure that i get a place in the program, but right now i feel like its my best bet if i can get a topic which really interests me.


main thing i wanna go for the PhD is because i feel like my master was a tad on the easy side and so that degree should at least push me beyond master graduates of more famous programs.

In my opinion, I think you should just suck it up and do more work to make up for his lack of effort, and I'll give you my reasons why.

First, an analogy. Let's say there are two companies A and B which are both run and operated by two people, and these companies are competitors, producing the same type of product. Let's say you are one of the workers for company A, and your partner is lazy and doesn't do anything, while both workers in company B are hard-working. If you guys in company A put out a shitty product because of your lazy partner, do you think prospective buyers are going to be sympathetic and say "oh well he has a shitty partner so we'll tell him 'good job' and buy his product even though company B has a better one"? No, they're going to say "ok well your product sucks so we're gonna go with company B, sorry bud".

My point is, in life you're going to find yourself in this type of situation really often. When you find yourself in this situation, you can either complain and bitch about the fact that your partner(s) suck(s) and put out a shitty quality product, or you can suck it up, make up for all the work your partner isn't doing and put out a product that you are proud of. In the end, your name will always be associated with the end product, whatever it may be. It's up to you to decide what that end product is going to look like, since it is a representation of yourself. In your working life, this is how you will demonstrate your worth: how good of a product you can put out no matter the circumstances. Don't go around complaining about your partner and asking for compensation and all that, you don't need to. If you work hard and make it happen, people will notice and they will remember, trust me. It will benefit you in the end, while the lazy people will also get noticed eventually, only in a negative way.

Go talk to the professor. Now that I'm a senior, I have had to deal with this exact situation too many times, so I have no problem throwing them under the bus. It really sucks when you have to do it to someone that you actually like, but hey. If you aren't bringing shit to the table, then you are probably dragging it down. I don't put up with that shit anymore.

I had a similar situation but it was a 4 person team. The three of us did the whole project and made our final presentation while the kid was a no show. He decided to show up to class the day we presented and was begging us for some of our notecards so he could present and we just said "don't worry we got it". So we go up to present, pos kid just stands there the whole time. It comes time for Q&A and one of the goody goody kids ask the kid why he didn't present anything. The professor said they were curious as well. We just look at the kid and he storms out of the class never to show again. Professor figured everything out right there
