dont the 10 commandments start with god saying that he is a jealous god (and thus blatantly imperfect, don't know how he's gotten away with people thinking he's perfect for the last however many thousands of years) and that if you don't believe in him he will send you straight to hell forever?

it would be a better world if anyone was a hardcore christian too. you cant deny that 99% of religions practice freedom and peace. but they also restrict the inherent freedom of humanity.

as of now, and being a massive proponent of erasing organised religions, i seriously dont know whats better.

Yeah my statement was a little broad. I completely agree with you 100%. I just like the idea of finding enlightenment through mind and body which is what Buddism is. I don't even practice it though, I have been considering meditating though. There is a lot of medical research that shows that meditation is incredibly good for you in many ways.

I can honestly say no to that. The world would not be a better place if everyone was a hardcore Christian. I work for a fundraising agency (raising money for charities that help the less fortunate people in third world countries and places in crisis - like syria). Whenever I talk to a hardcore Christian; first off they usually don't ever let me explain what the charity does because it's far too logical for them. They say they give all their money to their church. They say something fucked up like 'God will save those people' or it's 'God's will those people are dying of AIDS'. When I asked that guy 'what if you got AIDS, you wouldn't seek out a medication?' He told me 'I believe God wouldn't let AIDS touch me.

If there were no Christians I honestly believe this world would be a better place - and I was raised as one.

Here's my two cents, forgive me I didn't read a lot of responses here. But technically when God created the world he gave people free will so they could choose to follow him. If he had ultimate control over everyone what would choosing to follow him and do good even stand for? So obviously because of this people have the choice to do bad things and have done so. God really didn't have a choice what went down that day. Good video though I liked the end.

Okay so first time NS religious debate for me.

I believe kids should not be able to partake in religious stuff when they're under the age of 16 or something. The most important thing should be that everyone has a right to their own opinion, and the ability to choose for themselves. Religion and religious history should obviously be thought at schools, that is very important.

Also I don't think religion had a lot, or even anything, to do with this shooting. It is absolutely tragic, and I honestly feel like ass about the whole thing.

Guys, I have a good idea! How about you all just respect the beliefs of others and come to the realisation that no matter how hard you try not everyone is going to agree with you. Its perfectly ok to share your views; its not ok to condem people for not agreeing.

That was a good one. The good thing with religion is that people will defend it to the death against all logic. It makes for the perfect topic to argue, because you won't ever change anyone's thoughts on the subject, yet it's also guaranteed to turn into a fiery shitstorm.

If it wasn't god's fault then why can we say it was all god's doing whenever something good happens.

If something bad happens it was the people acting on free will. If something good happens it was all god and he just used the people as pawns to do his will.

...wut? you said you think that as long as people do good God will let them into heaven, regardless of whether or not they believe in him. i pointed out that the ten commandments say this isn't the case and that God does indeed send everyone who doesn't believe in him straight to fire and brimstone for all eternity.

I'm not bashing you saying this, I'm just confused. If you say you "Can't be sure of anything" how are you sure that you can't be? like you say you don't believe in absolutes? that contradicts itself, you can't even absolutely believe in your own idea of no absolutes

Everyone God put on earth has the ability to think the way the want, and to perform the actions they please. God has no control over over the evil actions people perform. To kill those poor innocent children was that mans choice, not God's. Do you honestly think God wanted that to happen? I sure as hell don't. If you believe in God then you believe in good. And if you believe in God then you must believe in the Satan. And if you believe in Satan then you believe in evil. Evil exists, and I'm tired of people thinking God is responsible for every evil action on earth and that he is able to stop it. That man will be punished for what he has done, that I'm sure of. And those children will forever rest peacefully.

Atheism is still a belief, thus it is owed just as much respect as any other beliefs.

This "War on God" is pretty ridiculous. It's not a war, its simply our society's natural progression into a more knowledgeable people. The ancient Greeks were pretty sure a heavenly chariot pulled the sun across the sky every day, but clearly that sounds crazy now that we know about how planets orbit the sun. The Catholic church once stated that the Earth was the center of the universe. Yeah, that wasn't even close. We claim infallibility in each of our religions when religions of the past have been thoroughly debunked.

The war on God is simply a product of our ability to explain what was once a mystery. The thought of God is being phased out not because we have no morals or faith, its more that we're following a natural progression of intelligent thought. We still have a foundation for ethical behavior that we're born with, remember that thread a few weeks ago with the video of babies being able to tell right from wrong? Those babies had no knowledge of God or religion, but they were born inherently good. So then it's possible to grow up with no knowledge of any God and still be a good person at heart.

Maybe as our intelligence grows so will our wisdom, which at the moment has not progressed as much. I consider the two to be very different. It's clearly not wise for us to be so divided when it comes to these issues, but we are. Maybe in 100 years we'll look back and say "damn, we were all really fucking dumb"

Although since the world is gonna end on Friday I guess we'll never find out.

Yes there is, since 1955 general happiness has gone down exponentially. It's an actual statistic measured by doing a type of census.

Yes there has, but since the early 1900s, the US income gap has increased more than ever, and now it's worse than it was during the Roman Empire.

I think you misinterpreted me somehow. I don't think a god plays a part. What I meant is it's a lot easier to shoot up a classroom with an AR-15 than it is with a single-shot.

But if you can't blame god for the bad things, why can you credit him for everything good?

If you're friend comes out of the coma because you prayed, god is good, god answers prayer, it's all god, god wanted him to live...

If your friend dies in the end god is still good, god still answered the prayer just not the way you wanted it, it was all part of his plan but our human mind can't comprehend his wonderful big picture...


Makes sense to me.

what's the difference? it's all in the bible, they just pick which parts they think are best and follow them, and ignore the parts they don't think are as good. it's impossible not to. bible contradicts itself like crazy, no?

and don't you go to hell for not following the ten commandments? when it says: "“You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God,visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me." how do you take it to mean anything other than: "if you don't believe in me you are going to hell?" it seems pretty clear to me... unless you don't actually go to hell for breaking the ten commandments.
