Filming while riding (dslr)

whats up guys, this is my first post here and i am hoping i dont get hated simply because i ride on one plank rather than two.

I am a filmer (both boarders and skiers) in the northwest and this season I am going to be using my 60d up on the mountain (dont want to take the 5d up there just yet) and I was wondering what methods you all prefer to film while following a rider/skier.

do you prefer glidecam or a simple handle etc.

Also if there are a million other threads just like this im sorry i couldnt figure out how to search within just the media and arts category.

Glidecam, blackbird, Merlin. Handheld has its uses. Personally handheld it better with a sony due to the built in is. It removes the jitters. Regardless, a stabilizer.

Glidecams are pricey for the average Joe, and if you can't throw down much for a stabilizer, you can look at a Cam Caddie, bout $40 and it works great

250-300$ is not exactly pricey when a lot of kids setups on here are $2000+...

I suppose I should say I am not new to filming or rig setups I was just wondering what you all prefer.

For skating I use a glidecam so I just assumed that would be fine for skiing/snowboarding as well

Make a DIY Merlin Steadicam - The technology is not really rocket science and the parts are easy to get for it. I used that for a long time until I could afford other options.

I mostly ski with my glidecam, or occasionally a tripod, I should probably make that closer to 50/50

Meh, I wouldn't recommend camtrol products. They are designed well and serve a purpose, but they don't "stabilize" they just add a handle that can be moved around and has places to mount other things. They're insanely expensive for what they actually do, you can buy a glidecam for the same price.

in response to OP, I would fully recommend using your glidecam. However, it is going to take some practice to get the results that you want...I can't stress this enough. practice, practice, practice. Handheld has it's place (I find I like some lifestyle shots to be handheld), but while skiing I would almost always use your glidecam.

In relation to this, don't use it too much. It is really easy to overuse your glidecam. If you are making a day edit, it's a bit more understandable, but try to mix it up with some shots using a tripod or some of those detail/lifestyle handheld stuff.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. Might try using both the glide cam and I think ill pick up a cam caddie as well since its so damn cheap because it will mount right up to my glide track I built. From there I will see which I like better. Might have to take up skiing lol it seems easier to film on skis

Sorry for double post but ski edits also are way cooler generally so I tend to film more skiers anyways haha

ha good choice. and glidecam is the way to go for sure. can't go wrong with that for follow cams. does take a little getting used to on skis though just for slight differences and what not. and if you currently board, that might be a little more tricky to get used to
