Skiing Invention Ideas

Hey Newschoolers

My brother is doing prototyping class next year and he has to do a year long project inventing something. So he decided to do it skiing related. So far he thought he would make magnetic ski poles that stick to your gloves, but we want more ideas.

they really should make a small device that goes onto your skis or bindings and can be located with an avy beacon.

this isn't pole related but something you put around your neck, like a big pillow but durable so your skis don't rest on your shoulder. or maybe even no hands

You know the small strips in the back of the rear window of the car that heat up to melt of ice and snow?

Some how implement that in the soles of the boots or the skis so that ice and snow dont build up. Also would make it nice after long day of skiing and you come back to the car or home that you dont bring snow every where and get your car all crappy.

Probably an unpractical invention, but just an idea.

a Goggle that has a heads up display kinda thing that connects to your iphone via bluetooth. tells time, shows texts, and most importantly, speed, all through the goggle when you want to see it. jumps should have a designated sign with the optimal speed and that way no overshoots or knuckles. sound waaaay to futuristic but you'd be surprised what some smart shredders can do!

Or, pow skis that have hydrofoils (snowfoils?) that come down from the ski underfoot that give it extra lift in the deep stuff. google hydrofoils if you dont know what they are

If your brother is looking for a serious invention to do a project on. he should look into ski brakes. the tech has barely changed since they were first introduced whereas the skiing mas massively changed. brakes arent built to take the impacts of big kickers, huge cliffs and stomping urban also entirely not designed for riding switch. freeskiing needs a revolution in brake design as its not really cutting it right now. a more compact way of keeping the brakes off the snow when the boot is in and a better design for brakes deploying when riding backwards without it bending them to shit.

Super fucking cheap plastics skis for like $20, like these but longer.

The bindings would have these really powerful magnets attaching them to the skis as a release system. That way kids could buy these to get into skiing, like a plastic sled, then when they get the $$$$ they buy real skis and go to real mountains (with real snow) and boom ticket prices go down because there's a bunch of people into skiing.

about the goggle thing, that would be cool ill ask my brother if that would be feasable for him to make.

For switch landings or whatever could you just not have the brake release slower to reduce the initial impact? Or make them like those cheap rental carbon poles, so there is a bit of a flex to them but they are more or less impossible to break or bend. Yes I know this doesn't solve rip outs but it is a start.

How about. Skis/bindings that have a chip installed that can be picked up by a beakon so you can find your skis if you lose them in powder?

I saw this in some stupid Vail resorts magazine. They do have some good technology behind it, this model is carbon fiber. But their main idea for this was comfort over performance. And this is $1295 and their cheapest model is $795 (I can see why it was advertised in a Vail magazine). yeaaah, I think I'll stick to my regular ski boots.

make a ski where you can change the size. Kinda like a split board. It can be wide then you take off half of each ski and its a park ski. Add something to the tip to make it more rockers.

You could have a shorter rope or cable between the tip and in toe of the binding and another rope between the tail and behind the heel piece. That way you could customize rocker more precisely, and the shorter ropes would be stronger and less flimsy than one long rope across the whole ski.
Or instead of selling a ski with custom rocker built in, sell the system so that people could install it themselves. You could set it up so you could screw the part that adjusts into the ski like how you would mount a binding (but in front of and/or behind the binding).

Something that wud help u hike BC in someway and have it be affordable so that some guy like me who doesnt have the money to buy AT bindings and skins can still go hike, idk might be a dead end thought train

like good skins for under $50. They would sell so damn fast.

also something like the BCA trekker, but better. So you don't have to get a separate Randonee setup.

The ski finder that can be tracked by a beacon is a TERRIBLE idea. If I'm burried in a slide, I sure as hell don't want people chasing signals all over the place for lost skis, when I'm under the snow suffocating.

haha fuck you are completely right, sounded like a good idea at the time. It would need like some remote so you could make it start transmitting once youve already lost it and are looking for it. but then again that just seems like too much weight/stuff to go wrong

just take recco tabs and stick em on your skis, they don't interfere with regular beacons but with a reccofinder you can still recover them ....

not sure about you, but I don't own a recco finder.  and I don't think patrol wants to spend all day chasing down lost skis.  the whole being able to locate a ski thing is a good idea, but it'd be tough to develop something that works

although recco isnt as widely used in north america as europe i would prefer not to have the possibility of somebody searching & finding me after after an avalanche reduced because they were off chasing the recco signal on my skis, not that recco is particularly useful for avalanche recovery when its quite likely its in your jacket and its been ripped off. i think the link posted with the established little radio device thing that was linked is better as long as it doesnt interfere with beacons and recco.

anything actively sending out radiosignals is likely going to interfere with your beacon ...
that being said the interference is usually negligeable ....
and about the recco things, do you carry a recco on your body when you go freeriding ? or only a beacon ? if you don't have a recco now your argument is pretty much invalid cause then it wouldn't change a thing.... (except the searchparty will now find a nice pair of skis)

and also, recco avalanche victim recovery is almost always too late ....
+ if you already have a beacon on yourself, that would be the first thing they would start scanning for, not recco ....

but yeah, i don't think it's going to be easy to 'borrow' skipatrol's recco finder to look for lost skis ....

I though about doing this for my senior design project a few years ago.  A passive system such as Recco would be best, because nobody wants to put batteries in their skis.  As far as sending out a signal goes, it just doesn't have to transmit a signal at the same frequency as a typical transceiver.  Look at the Pieps dog transmitter.  The Pieps DSP beacon has a special search mode just for a dog collar transmitter that operates at a different frequency as to not interfere with human rescue.  You can also strap these on to a sled, or anything else that may get buried in an avalanche.

I would eventually like to implement some sort of passive system directly into the cores of my skis in the future, although I don't think there is much of a market for it.

they also state that it's suitable for equipment, ie. snowmobiles ....

and about the passive systems incorporated into skis, i think that this is definitely going to happen at some point, after all, passive systems can't be that expensive to fabricate .....

Yeah.  I just discovered it recently as well while reading about software updates for my Pieps.  And putting a passive element in a ski is easy.  Making an inexpensive, compact, effective detector, not so much.  Maybe I should spend my down time at work designing something rather than perusing ns.
