Calling All Atheists

***First off I just want to say im not trying to start a shit storm by any means although unfortunately, one is most likely imminent.

I just have a quick question for you. I'm a practicing Catholic. That being said, Im not some radical, fundamentalist that tries to shove religion or God down peoples throats. Please re-read that last statement before you try to post some smart comment. But any way, Im NOT a creationist. I believe in evolution and the big bang theory simply because evolution has been proven and the big bang theory is the most plausible explanation for how our universe came to exist. But my question for all the atheists that dont believe in any god at all, is how did that hot, microscopic ball of gasses and other matter come about? Once again, im just curious to hear how atheists explain this or if the majority of them believe in a different theory of how the universe first came about. Im not trying to push religion on any one.

exactly creationism, you are "explicitly" stating that you are not taking a side for either one and yet you are fighting for evolution and the big bang theory, so again by normal logic either you are for creationism (which you are not) or you are stupid (which you are). and also the fact that time just began when the big bang theory is impossible to tell, and most likely absolute bullshit because time was always there, it never began and never stopped. it just was.

You're conflating "creationism" as the belief that god created the universe with "young earth creationism" which is the belief that god created the earth within the last 10k years and that humans were created separately from all other animals and are not related. These are totally different things. Young earth creationism denies a myriad of scientific evidence, and therefore I can safely say it is wrong. However if someone believes that god created the universe with the big bang and then guided evolution so that humans would eventually result, I can't prove that wrong, all I can say is that it hasn't been proven right and there's no evidence for it. That's why it's important to define your terms, these are very different beliefs.

That's........actually exactly what I just said. Current models of physics break down at 10^-43 seconds after the big bang. Before that we have no way (yet) to model what happened because our current understanding of causality breaks down because the density is too great.

That was an awesome assertion, it'd be nice if you at least tried to actually demonstrate it. If time is simply an absolute that is unchangeable and fixed, how do you explain phenomenon like time dilation due to relative velocity or gravitational pull?

fine how about this, time is a theory created by humans to help people keep track of the way things change like the earth or the sun in the sky, it irrelevant to space and the beginning of the universe.

So if it is a theory that only exists to keep track of how things change, how could it apply in a period when causality broke down because of intense density? Also, if you are correct that it is "irrelevant to space" I would encourage you to prove that, because there is a Nobel in it for you.

how, it is and it isnt, space can be in and out of time because of wormholes and light. you can "potentially" time travel if you hit the speed of light, you are out of time or going slower than actual time because it moves at a slower pace. the thing with your argument is you are arguing everything works the way earth does, which may or may not be true, again we dont know it is very possible it does and very possible it does not.

Because we can see it. Light that travels all the way across the universe behaves the same way light on earth does, there's no need for us to simply assume this, we've observed it.

What does that have to do with space being "in or out of time?"

The reason that those things are possible is that space and time are actually one thing, called spacetime.

I would just like to give you an award for your patience and resolve to get people to look past their own cognitive dissonance. Not a single person you are debating has cited a single fact. All they have done is referenced the bible or tried to knock down science for admitting that it does not know some things.

That is the whole point with science, it doesn't claim to know what it cannot support with fact based, peer reviewed study.

Look, this is the best way to put it. People have different beliefs, that's the way it is. Personally I do believe in an all powerful God. I'm a Christian and proud of it. I see God in every aspect of my daily life. I feel at peace with who I am and where I am going because of my faith and that's how I base my life. Some don't have the same view as I do. I respect their views, but I disagree with them.

My point is that some beleive, some don't and some don't have a damn clue. But the best thing to do is do some thinking on it, pray, research, do whatever. But find what you believe, put your faith in it and live your life.

I considered my self an atheist for the longest time, however over time I came across the idea of deism. This resonates better with me because it would seem as if there should be some sort of creation moment of our universe, however I don't think we will ever know exactly how we came about. But since there is this problem of how do we get the universe from nothing I would say that there could be a creator. That being said we are not the apple of it's eye. In fact this creator probably has no clue of our existence, we are so inconsequential on the scale of the cosmos I find it very hard to believe that there is a constant over watching god that created the entire universe just to watch every human being on this small clump of rock and metal and determine what happens to them after they die.

I would rather wonder and discover or at least try to discover than believe in fairy tales. I respect peoples beliefs, I just don't have faith and have tried to understand faith but in all honestly i couldn't accept it.

I mean it's a sin to be gay, not that i'm gay but that's ridiculous. And prostitution is accepted in the old testament , well i mean ok. In all honestly, religion is utilized as a control system.

Where have I said I respect people for their beliefs? I said they can have whatever beliefs they want, that doesn't mean I respect them. If someone believes that the earth is flat, I don't respect that belief, it's stupid.

What's wrong with thinking you're better than someone because of their beliefs? I'll assume everyone wants to have the best beliefs, so it follows that they believe their beliefs are best. And if having better beliefs makes you better, then that person is better than the person with worse beliefs.
If you don't think you're better than someone because your beliefs are better the wtf are you even doing with your life?

Do I believe that "I" am better? Not necessarily, because there are many things that go into the goodness of a person. I do however believe that *the belief* (or lack thereof as is the case with atheism) is better.

and no i do not believe that ones belief's are higher than others, its a persons choice to believe in what they want, and if they dont believe what i believe that is perfectly fine with me, your not gonna hear from me telling people that their choice in what to believe in is not okay. ill sure as hell voice my beliefs if you attack christianity but im not gonna go attack your beliefs.
