You're 100% correct. It doesn't deserve even half of the attention or notoriety it has garnered. It's not even in the top 15-20 gangster movies.

And was that defense of Avatar sarcastic? It was entertaining enough, but you can't dismiss the similarities of it narratively to Dancing With Wolves, Last Samurai, and any/all other cultural immersion flick. It's such whiteman congratulatory bullshit. "These poor hapless primitive people! They need a Whiteman to lead them to glory and show them civilized ways!" This movie was successful on the shoulders of its visuals and the 3D gimmick. I would trade Avatar never existing if it meant we weren't still fucking spoonfed all of these fucking dumb, tentpole 3D, 2.5 hr commericals years later. Really, dude? Neon? It isn't a bad movie, but it is absolutely overrated.

For my choice, I'll go with The Matrix. Wooden acting, embarrassingly terrible exposition, laughably bad deus ex machina plot devices, and the costuming and overall look of the flick hasn't stood up in the slightest. Just utterly illogical, which normally I can ignore, except that in this movie the "logic" of it all is so central to the whole movie that it collapses on itself. This is the "smart movie for dumb people" and I can't help but instantly judge people who are gaga for this movie.

I didn't like the movie, but really dude? Your big problems with the flick were that some teenaged actress playing a role didn't have perfect bow mechanics and that the deer didn't behave naturally enough? You must be a huge buzzkill and the guy who always points out how "unrealistic" everything is. It's a MOVIE, man.

Well that's dumb. Didn't even know they made a second one. Didn't actually watch the first until way after it came out. The fact that people were talking about it non stop was WUT.


Make a shitty movie, shitty plot, involve a lot of unrealistic partying, make everything overly elaborate, and put a bunch of shitty one liners that people will quote and post on the internet everyday for the next couple years.


I don't blame them If I were involved in that I'd pumped out 20 of those damn things. If people eat it up, fuck em.

Theres a point when things are just so bad that I can't help but noticing. I archery hunt quite a bit so those things stuck out to me more than they would to others.

Sam Worthington's character ultimately proved to be their savior, and led them into battle with a cute rousing little speech....you know, exactly like in Dances With Wolves and Last Samurai.

Do you really think that I watched that movie and didn't understand that the "man" was trying to steal their resources and subjugate its inhabitants? Obviously I wasn't saying that the people who were literally maniacally laughing and cutting down their magical trees were there to help. But, hey, thanks for pointing out the obvious as usual.

 The point is that Avatar basically grafted the central conflict of the movie from several other better narratives, that being a cultural outsider, who is initially an enemy, is seduced by the charms of the "savages" and flips sides and naturally becomes their leader and savior. That's not opinion, it's evident, and it's tired, unimaginative, and definitely has a healthy dose of the whitey narcissism.

And as for the "stunning use of cgi and 3d" who the fuck cares? I appreciate movies that look great, create a world, and have a visual style, but those things don't carry a movie, especially one that flirts with 3 hours and is pretty much devoid of any and all other merit. I don't get a kick out of some marketing guys spitballing ideas on a whiteboard about potential action figures and how they can best incorporate explosions and 3D and NEON into a billion dollar movie. The obsession that people, and apparently you, have with "sweet graphics" has obliterated the quality of movies in the last ten years.

As for The Matrix....it's incredibly overrated. If you're the kind of person who was all, "Duuuude....the world's an illusion! It's a metaphor for our reliance on technology and our droning through our lives blind to the TRUTH!" and were impacted by it, you're stupid. The movie has this reputation of being a mindfuck, and a really "deep" movie in a lot of people's eyes, and I think it's stupid, so cry about it and argue with me about for 3 pages like you will about any/all things.

The thread is about OVERRATED MOVIES...not, our least favorite movies.

 Honestly dude, your posts are so ridiculously and consistently dumb that it's unreal. Listen to yourself....you're arguing that "neon" made Avatar an amazing movie.

Quite the collection. Naked Gun and Zoolander are two of my favorites.

I'd say for overrated/worst would be very super hero marvel movie except maybe the dark knight. (Transformers are the worst)

Yes, BUT, watching it high as a kite in IMAX 3D made it totally awesome. Long enough too so that you can get a decent buzz on by the end from the adult beverages.

Donny Darko was in fact overrated, it was an interesting concept though.

Napoleon Dynamite, had some funny lines but was just slow and didn't have a well thought up plot.

Any movie that Kristen Stewart or any of the cast of Twilight was in. Adventureland was alright though

Of course. I'm pretty sure it mentioned that that was a necessary element somewhere in the previews. "Find some good hallucinogenics and keep your 3d glasses on at all times" Or something like that.


Plus it was at an Imax and they were doing a special on the hubble telescope so I had a telescope floating right next to me with astronauts floating around the theater working on it. Best couple minute preview ever.

Didn't mind the length but it made it hard to not take a piss break. About mid way through I couldn't hold it anyone, should have drank those beers. Finally worked up the courage to climb over every one and down the stairs and go piss. Coming back in with a sold out theater of strangers staring at you with neon yellow glasses, not so cool. Stumbled up the stairs and go to my seat.


The war scene was pretty lame. I don't want to see machine blowing up mother tree and people shooting the cool blue alien people.


Idk how I never made it back to see it again. Oh well. they should come out with a sequel, "Avatar: no plot, no wars, just 3 hours of really cool neon shit and blue alien people"


I would def pay 20 bucks to see that.

you ever heard of Shambhala? It's a electronic music festival in early August here in BC. If you like neon forests and electronic music (and one of the best parties ever - like, seriously), it could be worth the 'trip'.

back on topic: Not sure how hyped up it actually is/was?, but I seam to be the only person that hated Apocalypto. I just feel like the ending makes the entire movie irrelevant.

If you went into the hangover not really knowing what to expect like I did, then it's one of the funniest and most enjoyable movies I have ever seen.

But if not, yes it's overrated.

I hate electronic music these days. I think more I hate the scene these days. What the electronic music scene has become over the last few years is just horrible.


That said I've heard that that fest was a lot of fun. I try to avoid crossing borders unless there's something I really really really want to go see.
