Big Air a Possibility at 2018 Olympics

Event organizers for the Winter Olympic Games recently discussed the possibility of adding Ski and Snowboard Big Air to the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. If added, Big Air would follow Ski and Snowboard Slopestyle and Ski Halfpipe, which will make their Olympic debuts at the 2014 Games in Sochi, Russia.

The discussions took place at the annual autumn meetings of the International Ski Federation (FIS) Council, held Oct. 2 - 6 in Zurich, Switzerland, during a meeting with the Freeskiing Advisory Committee.

"These are conversations being had at a committee level, but there is a push for Big Air in the South Korea Olympics," Michael Spencer, a co-founder of the Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) who was in attendance at the meetings, told ESPN.com.

I think they should just fix the judging system for Aerials... Like make grabs actually worth something.

How so? In both you are just trying to get the most points from the judges with a single trick. Aerials have way steeper jumps and focus almost entirely on flips and spins at the olympic level, when was the last time you saw someone do a grab in the Olympics?

At this point I highly doubt the FIS would let both events occur in the same games, and IMO the only issue with Aerials as opposed to big air is that they focus way too much on pencil steeze and allow for no other styles.

Aerial skiing is a very different sport from big air - it has a set of very specific rules/regulations and restrictions - you are essentially judged on your execution of a specific maneuver. Slopestyle, Halfpipe and Big Air competitions are a separate sport (FREEskiing) as they give an athlete a blank canvas to express themselves creatively. The difference between the sports isn't really pencil vs. grabbed steeze, but in the mentality of the competition - freeskiing allows skiers to demonstrate their best skiing in whatever way they wish to do so.

I don't think the issue with big air in the Olympics would be its conflict with aerials, but some people might have a problem with its open-endedness.

yeah I guess the IOC might not like having two (in the eyes most viewers) fairly similar events. I definitely wouldn't have any problem with both big air and aerials in the Olympics though - I'd watch them both!

the day this happens will be the day i buy a snowboard. think about it this is the exact opposite direction i could ever want skiing to go, in the Olympics it would be strait spin to win especially if it merged formats with aerials GAAAAAAYYYYYY

what is the point, in all seriousness the winning trick will be a triple and the winning trip in aerials will be a triple instead of a grab it will be a penciled spin that will be the only difference in 2018
