Education helps but its not essential. bottom line effort gets rewarded. if you put enough effort, time and commitment into something you will see results guaranteed. finding a job in these times is no small feat. it takes weeks that quickly turn to months and most often (at least for me) you wont get hired unless you know someone on the inside or some other extenuating circumstance.
Example: Value Village was one of the first places i applied to when I moved back for school and i showed up in my street clothes and basically tossed in an application cause i was in the neighborhood. 30 to 40 applications later i received my first callback in months from none other than value village. in the first interview the first thing they asked about was my background growing up in Wyoming on cattle ranch. from then on they seemed only interested in that and the work ethic i had learned from that life. turns out they hired me based on the state i grew up in.
so you never really know what to expect these days. except that if you really try and put forth enough effort you will see results or find another way. i haven't had a job in months and i have been living just fine off of local yard work gigs, moving gigs, and ebay.
as far as having a shitty ass job goes. stop complaining and be thankful your shitty job is the envy of 8.3% of America (12.8 billion people).
