So like 2 weeks ago I rolled my truck, and need a new car for school. My parents are going to buy me a car when I leave for college so I'm not going to buy anything nice.
.
.
This is what I was looking at, http://rapidcity.craigslist.org/cto/3152114352.html
.
.
But $2100 seems like a lot if it has 250000 miles. How much do you guys think I should pay? I'm not a car guy and neither are my parents so any help is appreciated! And of course karma to help!
ask about the head gasket, cv axles, and timing belt. if these have been replaced within the last ~50k i'd say it's good to go. if not, stay the fuck away.
250,000 miles is nothing, dont worry about it. i would pay through western union or as a gift through Paypal, but before you do that delete system 32 cus you get better deals that way. its alwyase dangerous to meet strangers so just ask them to leave the car somewhere you can get to unlocked.
ask for all the records for all the work that has been done to it. also I am in the same boat as you of looking into buying a car. I went and looked at one today and the lady was just like well someone else is interested in it that's gonna pay asking and for me I never pay asking. I don't think anyone does. I mean why else go to private sales if your not gonna barter. anyways yah ask for all the receipts how long its been going for bound that somethings going to go soon, just a matter of time that many miles is pretty rough on a car. if anything I would offer 1500 and if they take it good if not wouldn't pay anymore than $1600 its gonna cost a bit if you want to get new paint to finish up the fender and what not. think of it this way you have what they want.. money.
I paid full for my truck. It was a fair price and all around very sound.
And for the OP: I would never buy a vehicle with that much miles. I have no problem putting 200,000 on it myself but not buying one. The car looks pretty cheesy too
see how it runs in person, dont make an offer over the phone ask for service records as previously stated checking if the timing waterpump and all that jazz has been done. if you see it in person and like it and it seems solid offer him 1500-1600 and go from there, the most id prolly pay for that would be 1800; then lose the headlights and wheels lol just my opinion
i feel like you picked that car out because of the rims. dont be afraid to sterotype the owner, if its a reltively young guy who looks like he would beat on a car, he probably did and there could be some underlying issues which will come later and be expensive. I would keep looking, try to find one thats a bit cleaner, lower miles, and preferbly owned by an older person. and make sure to rev it it neutral and check out the exhaust when you do, if it blows smoke stay away or if the exhaust smells kind of sweet smelling and not like exhasut, you have a head gasket issue
i wouldnt go over 1200 after 260000 miles shit like hoses and gaskets start to fail from use and age, subarus run strong so ive heard but this is just my $0.02
and maybe i'm stupid but i've seen this on a lot of tuned cars and never knew what it was so maybe one of you gearheads can teach me something today and tell me what this is ?
The 2.2 is a strong motor and is not prone to head gasket failure like the 2.5. That said, $2100 is unreasonable. I got my '97 Impreza Outback with 180k for $1,300. It just needed new struts.
It's just not worth the risk. Buying a used car there's always risk involved. You could get something that seems alright and then shits out not long after buying it because a bunch of things were wrong. Sometimes when people find out somethings wrong that costs too much, they try and sell it knowing it's going to shit out.
Even beyong that though, 264k is a lot of miles. A LOT OF MILES. The longer a car is run the more you have to look at stuff like engines and transmissions. That shit will cost you more than you pay for a car like this. In your price range I think you can find some much better cars. Maybe not a rolls but something that will get you from a to b and be reliable.
The shittiest thing is when you put a bunch of money into something and then have nothing but problems. If you're dead set on a subaru and can't find one that works in that price range don't be afraid to move up a little bit. A car's an investment. It's better to buy a car that doesn't break down and need repairs all the time for a little more money, especially if you're talking about repairs cars with 264k might need. And a lot of kids beat the fuck out of their cars.
A lot of times if you buy a standard the people that own them take better care of them.
I just don't want to see you buy a car, and then owe your parents on it when it's sitting in the driveway or the garage getting fixed instead of you driving it. Nothing is worse than paying for something you can't even drive.
Also wouldn't be a bad idea to have a friend that knows cars go with you to check it out. Or if you're really interested, see if you can take it in for an inspection somewhere. If you honestly plan to buy the car, it's not a bad idea to pay someone a few bucks to make sure you aren't throwing away 2 grand.
Good luck. Hopefully you get somethin that'll get you too the mountains reliably this year.
Holy solid post...+k....yea my friends dad flips cars for some extra cash and I'vee been talking to him about cars. He got his son his truck for 2k and then put 2k into it, and it's now worth like 10 or something up there. Thinking about trying to do this if I can get a little extra money.
I would talk to him and see what he has or what he knows about. If he deals in cars he could probably find you a good car, maybe even has one. Might not be the craziest deal but if he knows what he's doing it'll at least be something that should be reliable.
Also make sure to keep up with shit like oil changes and what not. you want your car to last and be worth something if you want to sell it and buy another one at some point.
dude, dont drop more than 1500 at the max,
even 1000 if you dont care about people laughing bout your car, youll get a new one in not even a year, and once you do, well itll be heaven,
what happiness without pain?
live through pain, now is the time
i got a 1992 2.0l legacy for 1000 dollars here in new zealand. it had done 185,000km and has far more space than an impreza. save your pennys and get a turbo one so you can be like lesh anyways
sorry for the dub post but i just searched subaru u 3000 on craigslist and this legacy is a far better option for less aswell. lots more boot space for banging chicks ;)
Because I live way out of the way for any of my friends to give me a ride, and my parents both work, and it's to far to ride a bike or anything, so I can't get there any other way. Also to the guy who posted the other car. Yea I saw that the other day and have been lookin at it. Looks somewhat decent actually.
