Massive increase in photo quality on NS?

Since we launched the changes to the ratings system, I've noticed an immense increase in the quality of photos both on the homepage, and populating all the top rated views.

I know that our rating system is designed to be far more accurate than before, but I'm also wondering if there is a psychological willingness of media creators to put their stuff up due to less downvoting?

Have you guys noticed this as well? Thoughts? I haven't been following videos as closely, is it the same over there?

I remember talking to someone on here, and they said the trick was to save all your photos for the summer and dump maybe 1-2 a week. Not as much content being uploaded daily to compete with, as 75%+ of the members are not skiing... The summer camps seem to be pumping a bit of content out as well.

I wouldn't necessarily say it's JUST the new rating system that is doing it. I believe a lot of emphasis has been put on media this past season, and more and more people are into it and want to contribute. This is also the first summer for the new galleries, no?

Anywho, whatever it is, it's great and I love it. Cheers to those that contribute, and those that make it possible!

That is the last photo of the day using the old system. Look at the run before it, and look at the run after it.

I agree that there's way bigger emphasis on the whole system, and in general people are using it more... but the day the rating system was released there has been a decided improvement in the top content.

From the math side I kind of know why, but I'm curious for photographers who are contributing to share their thoughts on if anything feels different.

Then I do agree with you there for sure; the easier and newer system simply does a better job at determining the best content.

Maybe it has been there all along, same amount of high quality work every summer, and we missed out this whole time ;)

That was why we changed the rating system, so much of the good stuff was getting passed over by a few downvoting haters.

The morale thing is the missing aspect though. If people are adding more photos because they don't feel it will get blasted out of existence. If this is true, then its a double win.

I've noticed it's been FAR better, recently as well... Sorta excites me that high quality content is being recognized better. I'll have to start posting stuff when I get back up to hood in a few weeks.

New rating system may have encouraged people to upload new pics, also there has been some contest on the photog cult going on fyi.

I agree. I also think with all the amazing filming and editing in these videos, photography is back to a being more appreciated by more of the masses; thus creating more quality shots.

Nice to hear it!

That is basically what we want NS to be all about from here on in... super quality content from the best of the unrecognized talent. This place is the forefront of the revolution happening in ski media... I'd bet anything that the top talent on NS absolutely dominates the video / magazine scene in a couple of years.

Its my hope that we can work together to really help foster and showcase that talent.

I wouldn't be surprised, to tell you the truth. There's so much of that going on within this sport that it's insane... It's almost too competitive to tell you the truth...

Then again, if you can sell a product, or sell a service, or sell any type of content, you should be able to sell yourself in order to sell that sort of stuff, so that's what all of it really comes down to with that scene. NS definitely gives a good base for selling personal work - as it's really about as real as it gets when it comes to what's hot, what's not, and how things should be critiqued.
