Quick BMX Question (+k and love)

So I just got a new bike with colored rims. Ive seen my friends rims be completely junked up and scratched up from the brake pads being colored. Some people told me clear pads will solve but other said other wise. The guy I bought it from rode brakeless so he had no clue. Does anyone have experience with this, if so do share. Thanks

If you are new to BMX, please please please ride brakes. Get the feel for your bike and get some bike control before you take them off

pretty sure clear pads will still rub your rims but not as much as the regular black ones, try riding just brakeless and putting your foot in the rear wheel to slow yourself down

or get chrome rims and use brakes

If it really bothers you that much just get a rear rim in anodized that matches the current colour. Or go chrome for some sick stopping power

Riding brakeless does a couple things for ya.
1. Makes it so you cant wimp out when you approach a jump or a quarter or what ever.
2. It teaches you how to pump transition. IE how to speed and slow down the bike by pumping your legs.
3. Less weight?
4. Makes barspins and whips less cumber-sum

I ride brake less and it has taught me how to carry speed through transition because I cant stop. It taught me how to charge full speed at a quarter, not wimp out and air the fuck out of it. It also taught me that I can haul ass at a quarter and just land on the deck gently or not air high at all, due to pumping. So I would say if you just started, keep the brakes on for a year, if not then take them off to increase your bike control.

Thanks for your post! I pretty much knew/read all of this already except for the pumping the tranis part, thanks alot. Im planning on staying brakeless and straping a helmet on!

my clear brake pads wore the color right off my rims in about 5-6 months, i think wet pads/rims might affect the wear. and i agree with you guys, brakeless is definetly the way to go.

i heard rubbing wax over your rims, and white is better than clear (clear are harder for some reason), but its not so much the pad as grit and stuff getting on the pads. and instead of using a rearbrake and dealing with a gyro or long ass cable just go front brake and feed the cable through your steerertube/forks, takes getting used to but it has way more stopping power and is way less cumbersome. front brakes have about 75% of your bikes stopping power so it wont skid and is more efficient, only one thing is i wouldn't recommend this if your riding dirt. like below

yeah I ride brakes for trails. Nothing is scarier than jumping a new set of 12 ft doubles that you have never hit before with out brakes. SO SCARY! hahahaha

look up crabapple hits, they are at whistler. First time I hit them I didn't have a chain, or brakes. fifty foot tables, that are easily overshootable.

Started bmx last year with my sexy as fuck fit street 2. custom as shit.. will add pics later. but i started riding brakeless and i love it. no pussing out, no bull shit just goin ham 24/7 so yea get used to it and youll be fine. and all pads will take off the paint over time (i have gold rims and im never putting brakes on them). i suggest just riding brakeless

I love riding rear brakes. I've got an sst oryg on my dk. The brakeless trend just kind of started when I was getting out of riding. My buddy did it, good for him. Now a lot of noobs do it to be cool. It's kind of retarded.

I fucking love my rear brakes. Never got in the way for me, and I will fufanu pretty much anything. I could do more with my bike because of them.


Riding brakeless because of the trend is like riding the park with one ski. Yeah you can claim it but it's not that cool if it brings your level of riding down.

Also it's not like I couldn't have rode without them. You have feet. Plus I didn't have fronts any way so that was all toe jammage anyway. I just think it's dumb that people do it just to be cool. And the trend has gotten pretty massive since I stopped riding a while back.

brakes get in the way, they're rattly, annoying to maintain and are just an extra expense. the only dudes that ride them are in the park or pipe, street dudes that ride them usually come from a racing background or the old school where fufanus still exist.

the other shit doesn't matter either, 2 pegs, no pegs, 4 pegs, 3 pegs, low seat, high seat, huge bars, small bars, freecoaster or cassette, half or full link, blah blah blah. ride what you want.

and my ratty street machine for cred.

Take the brakes off for sure. You get a better understanding for how to pump turns and shit to gain more speed and it's a lot more fun to ride

i ride some trails and around my school's campus so i like having breaks, i have black rims green pads and have very minimal wear on them, but i only use them when i have to. just keep your finger off the brake when riding and i bet you will see very little wear. just dont be feathering the brake every 30 sec

Not really. If you're using them as a crutch all the time then that's retarded. They don't get in the way and there are certain times they're helpful.

Did I absolutely need them? Of course not. Were there times they came in handy, for sure.

Lol at people talking about how they were better at pumping transitions because of taking their brakes off. That's the worst attempt at a point I've heard today.

obviously if you are brakeless/riding brakes and you pump tranny to go faster, your brakes aren't even in the equation.

What I was talking about when you land in transition or pop out of transition you learn how to anti-pump to slow yourself down if you need to.

But blah blah, ride what you want to ride. stoked you can fufanu any thing though, seems like that and abubacas aren't found to frequently any more.

Clear pads will not fuck up colored wheels. I've been rocking Fly Zapatas with my fire engine red Hazard Lites for a couple years now and they still look great. Also, riding brakeless is nothing more than a stupid trend. Saying that it "makes" you commit is no different than saying you're a fucking pussy and need to remove your brakes so you don't rely on them like a crutch. As for the weight argument...if you can't handle an extra ~2 pounds on your bike, you're also a fucking pussy, and a weak one at that. OP, ride brakes. You're not a pro, and will most likely need to stop at one time or another. If you're really worried about bars and tailwhips, buy an extra long cable, or run a gyro.

me and my friends have tried all different colors and these are the only ones that truly dont rub off. plus they sorta work when theyre wet. theyre bigger than normal so ive noticed they actually stop you quicker. only 2 downsides. they squeak, not as bad as clear ones. and they leave a little bit of a tan line around the rim. you can tell in bottom pic (my bike). the tan line is almost gone now, barely noticeable since i took the pic. ive probably put 60 miles street riding on them, and 0 paint rub off.

DK has really gone downhill... now they sell bikes in Walmart. Ride and Dans Comp are still going strong. Wide bars and low frames are now in style.

How the fuck did wide bars come into style? That's what people are rocking in the streets? Fuck, first thing I did with every pair of bars was hacksaw that shit so the grips were on the curve.


This thread motivated me to get on my bike but unfortunately my tires were flat and I don't have a clue where my air pumps are. Sad. I prolly couldn't even do a wheelie.

Hearing that about dk breaks my heart though. They used to be the shit.

damn that makes me sad to hear dk's are in walmart too. i see little kids with them all the time and it bums me out to have one. i do really enjoy my 11' kvant. and yea danscomp is great. i always get my stuff from there.
