Whole new setup for 12/13

potentially instructing this season and was looking for some new skis. and while im at it new boots aswell because well i need new ones

so i have about $1600 for skis boots and bindings. ideally id like to get 3 pairs but dont think thats as feasible when you have to chuck bindings on all of them

im not a huge park skiier, only really because i havent had the time before eg family trips, but i skate and dirtbike so im definately keen to give it ago, along with some jumps.

i was looking at the moment eldorados for my instructing ski, because they can also be thrown around in the park aswell.

i was then thinking a wider ski for pow like on3p caylors or 4frnt renegades.

any advice would be great and im open for any suggestions

im 6"1 and 163 lbs

sorry thought i wrote it in, but ill be skiing whistler from jan-april and hopefully till the end of the season, but the last month isnt set yet. thats skiing like 4 days a week

Definitely get something all mountain jib (~100 underfoot) + something fat (115+).

You can use the all mountain skis daily and the fat ones when the fun stuff falls.

Personally I'd go for ON3P Jeronimos or Moment PB&Js for the all mountain ski if I was your size, I found the Moments a bit stiff and presume I'd feel the same about the Jmos given I'm skinny as and like a soft feeling ski.

There is a million pow skis to choose from, that depends more on if you want to charge or jib or a bit of both.

For boots go to a really good bootfitter. Get a full custom foot insert. Not a mass produced one. Sounds like your gonna be in the 100-120 flex range. depends what you wanna do more of, jib or all over the mountain.

yep will definately be going to a boot fitter and getting it done properly, that will be my first purchase so then have the money to buy the skis afterwards.

thanks for all the options, but i was also told by a few people that it would be good to get a groomer for instructing and doing the exam... like cant imagine theyd be too impressed if i rocked up at the exam and looked like a park rat

pretty sure it would be like 50/50.. not the best park skier but keen to get into it although i do love charging all mountain, so im pretty much looking for a park ski that holds up on groomers, and then a fat one for owpays.

something along the lines of a LINE Blend or K2 Kung Fujas would be a great day to day ski. you'll be fine doing your exam on those. i took mine back in the day on a pair of Volant Machete 69s when twin tips were new and scary to CSIA examiners.

for a wide ski look at something like a LINE Opus or Volkl Gotama. i've got both a Gotama and an Obsethed for my pow boards and personally i like the Gotama better.

as far as boots go, if you're buying the boots in Whistler go to FanatykCo or Skiis & Biikes. Surefoot is a lot of smoke and mirrors that costs more than it's worth. I know TMC Freeriderz is a "core" shop but when it comes to boots, i personally wouldn't be too inclined to have them look after it

Buy something 110-120mm as your everyday ski, but pick up some park skis and some old Legend Pros cheap in October ski swaps.

For boots come see me in the salomon shop in whistler. We are getting set up as a real custom shop, custom liners, footbeds the lot. We only sell salomon and atomic boots, but if you dont fit those I can send you off to get the shells else where, then you can come back for fitting.

If your instructing for the mountain you will get 25% off the lot.

Ski wise, for your teaching ski, I would look at the Rossi EXP skis, dont go above 95mm, 85mm should be good.

Pow ski wise there are alot of options. Things you will need to decide are if you want twin rocker, or just tip rocker. The Rocker 2 was teh biggest selling pow ski in whistler last season, and there are now a few differnt versions you could look at.

Maybe also look at the pepitor, that should be a good ski for here too. If you want more of a driver ski, then a playfull ski, you may want to look at differnt pow skis.

theres these screws you can mount in your skis so you can take bindings in and out and switch them so you can have just one pair of bindings and a few pairs of skis

are you willing to buy used gear? with 1600 you can easily have 3 sets of sticks/bindings

Never used them but I've heard tons of great things about them. I heard they protect more against pullouts as well, who knows. But yeah, super easy to change bindings in between skis.

Hoji uses the Quiver Killers, that says something that they would stand up to some pretty gnarly skiing.

yeah will for sure lool into quiver killers because that would save heaps, and nah im not above buying used if its in good condition, will be skiing almost 4/5 days a week so dont want to buy something that falls apart and have to buy another. boots are currently top of my priorities, im gonna sit down this weekend and work out a bidget because im starting to think i have enough to spend a whole season there without working, so that would mean just park and all mountain/pow, which wont be hard to find, but thanks for all the options

Whistler is pretty pricey.

To help with your budget,

$1800 for a pass,
$500 a month for rent, could be cheaper if you dont mind sharing a tiny place
at least $250 a month for food, its an expensive town unfortunately

add on any thing you may spend if you plan on going out in the evenings.

Its doable but you need quite a bit saved up. If I were you I would look for a night job with the mountain. Your pay wont be great, but you will get a free pass, cheaper rent at staff housing, and deals on food. Also you get 25% off all your purchases in the mountain shops, ski, boots ect.

Just a suggestion though

my mums an accountant for a big ski travel agency in australia, and whistler is most of their bookings, so i get deals on all that stuff. i reckon it shouldnt be too much, and i had originally planned for $150 a week for food haha so that 250 a month makes me feel a bit better. cheers for all the info though
