honestly, B&H is where I buy all of my gear. They don't exactly off the best deals on items, but they are the most professional/trusted retailer (IMO) in the photography/video world.

in terms of a t2i, you can definitely find a cheaper body, but for anything new, use B&H

you can sell the kit lens for 100 and pick up a 50mm 1.8 for 100. that's what I did, although I did play around with the kit lens for a couple weeks before selling it.

A Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 (Non-VC Version) Very solid lens for the money, extremely sharp when stopped down. Buy it used for $300ish

50mm is defiantly a fun lens to shoot with. I did that for about 2 months before I also bought the Tamron. If he cant have 2 lenses, go with the kit lens. From what it sounds like, he isnt TO serious into filming.

this is true. I know absolutely nothing about filming and photography, all I know how to use is a hand cam and a GoPro. I'm probably gonna be taking photo/video classes this summer if they offer them somewhere. But I'll be taking pics and vids, making lots of edits in the winter, and maybe this summer. So I want a lens below $200 that will do good in both. It doesn't have to be top of the line or anything, just pretty good shot quality.

if you have $200 to spend I would narrow it down to a couple choices....

1. Kit lens + Canon 50mm f/1.8 or veven better, a vintage 50mm f/1.4. Look at the Pentax

2. Sigma 18-50 f/2.8-4.5 It is variable aperture which is a downside, but from what I hear, its significantly better then the Canon kit lens. Not as good as the Tamron, but will get the job done.


I would probably go with option 1 because I love my 50mm. Very nice optics for such a cheap lens. This whole edit was shot on it. And no this not self promotion.

you might want to consider other cameras other than a t2i or dslr in general.

just a suggestion because you said you dont have the money to afford equipment. and dslr equipment adds up and becomes extremely expensive. where as a camcorder (hv30/40/HF series) is less expensive and still produces a good image.
then you can take what you saved by not investing in a dslr and get a decent tripod setup, a wide angle/fisheye, ect.

this. you can get a pentax to eos adapter for $5 on amazon, and the lenses are actually really cheap. also, they're essentially bombproof, so even if the outside is beat to hell, chances are the optics are still good.... still check them though, just in case.

Because DSLR's have a pretty sharp learning curve, it's going to be a while before you can produce images like what you'd see coming out of the hv30
