Clearly there is a major mis-understanding of the internet going on over there. They didn't even include a 'community' category, which NS, TGR and EpicSki would completely obliterate everything else.

Way to go guys.

A very interesting concept that this brings up though is the idea that perhaps there needs to be some better 'filtration' systems on the site. There is just such a massive quantity of stuff here, that to someone that doesn't come every day its completely overwhelming.

This is exactly where the idea of things like Photo of the Day, Video of the Day, (week/month) and Channel organization in NSTV come from. Its the beginning of the process to get some of the best stuff on the site to the front.

By no means is this a small task, and in no way is it perfect yet... but I do think that it would be cool to have that more widespread. For instance, it would be awesome to have top rated forum threads and such, where you could have none of the 'chaff' and only the good stuff.

I don't think we'd ever get rid of the insanity views that we still have, as the day-to-day NSer needs an incredibly high quantity of new stuff coming at them from all angles. I think we just need to develop a few views for people who are not regulars... as we get a ton of them now.

One project I'd like to undertake is a homepage re-design. Its been a while, and I think we're close to due for one.

The most successful way I've seen top rated forums work is on reddit. I recommend you check out their up-vote and down-vote system, it allows for a of wisdom-of-the-crowd/market principle that naturally brings the most interesting threads to the top, as well as the best/most interesting comments to the top of the thread as well.

Of course some may not wan to give up the linearly chronological makeup of our current threads, but the up-vote system does function if it is properly implemented.

Anyway, it's worth looking at if you're interested in creating a more quality contingent forum of the nature you refer to..

Actually interestingly enough, this is exactly where our source of knowledge of the new up/down voting system is coming from. The reddit guys are freaking geniuses so we're going to wide-scale implement the same style of rating that they use.

I don't think we'll give up the classic linear view, because that is decidedly 'newschoolers' - but I think we'll add a layer of ratings on top of it. So you can go to pages where you can view everything by ratings... and we'll use the Reddit system.

I think this is awesome. I mean, there is no where some kid can call out Tom Brady, and he will personally answer, and call you out right back. I think that says something not only about NS, but for freeskiing as a whole.(And this could potentially be lost with the coming Olympics, so that's one of the advantages of being "Underground")

Also NEW SEARCH BAR theres gotta be something to make it work. I don't even search that much, but if anything here needs work (don't get me wrong i love it all) its searching. Sifting through endless threads can be hellish

You have to take into account that a lot of known skiers have grown with the site and as such know when to come back and reply accordingly... which is not a bad thing either.

Yeah generally we're pretty aware of most of the issues on the site, but we have such a backlog (or those issues are big ones) that it takes time to implement. For instance this rating thing is a gigantic change to a lot of what is there on the site, so we've been doing some testing in the background (not visible to you guys) to be sure we can get it right. After we have some successful tests, we have to back-convert everything that has ever been in the site, and totally re-build all ranking systems everywhere. Its no small task. :)

I will admit though that we only hit that point because we had a million different solutions to solve the 1-10 rating scale. We got so close... I'd say we got it to 90% accurate... but that last 10% was just totally elusive. It was only after months of research that we came across that post and realized that we were going about it completely wrong.

NS is an insanely complicated site on the backend. Lots of people don't realize that part of it, and that is why things can take a while to fix. We've been doing our best to stop putting band-aids on things, and go deep to really solve the problem... but boy... is that a lot of work from time to time. Overhauling the media system was like a 6 month project that ballooned to 2.5 years. :)

Seriously though, there are some rad communities - not just NS - in this sport, and they should get huge recognition. These silly bloggers have such a narrow view of the internet.

I guess that is why traditional media is getting toppled everywhere by the wave of the internet. I always loved this XKCD comic, which addresses this beautifully (though replace DRM with traditional media or whatever other industry isn't adapting)

I mean sure, traditional media is still really powerful... but the ignorance to the growing groundswell of the people's voice will be their ultimate downfall.

well what do you expect to happen with the kind of moderation you guys have chosen to use? pretty much anything goes as long as its not related to an african american or homosexual, and even that is starting to become acceptable on here.

never gave it much though but am certainly not surprised that outsiders think this place is a joke, the amount of internet nerds on here constantly trying to outdo each other by posting stupid pictures and trying to make the most offensive joke possible about whatever is being discussed is crazy.

I don't know, I've been banned from a few websites for the first post I've made, getting pissed at some troll trying to stirr shit, registered and called him/her out, and a few sites actually sent me a message "You were banned indefinitely. Reason: Don't call other members trolls." And these were "prestigious" community sites with clear rules what you can or can't say, yet the mods were/are pretty much anal-retentive when it came to "following the rules".

On NS, it's pretty much fair game if not for the things you mentioned and member intervention and I for one fucking love it.

Just work on making the possibility to flag threads for deletion (for reasons of repost/infraction) in the future possible.

the reason this thread was created is the reason this site is so funny and is the butt of jokes on so many other ski forums. caring so much about what other people think, which seems to be a common theme of posts on this site, is pretty hilarious, as is this thread. the spelling mistake in the thread title doesn't help your case.

whoa whoa. really? How old are you? I am turning 27 and I hardly ski park anymore. Only because I moved to the best mountain in the world for slack country and gnar and they don't have a park. I ski tour 6 days a week and I just spent the day today doing jib laps because I spent the majority of the morning working on my non profit society I started.

Getting older and settling down does not do that to you, your attitude does.

When I joined in 06, i had still been skiing all my life, but the only source of newschool media was Freeze, then they peaced out. I lived in Golden, BC, so i didn't even ski park. I didn't step into a park until last year when I moved to a city. I'm almost 21, but compared to most of the site, I feel old, in a lot of ways. All the kids "discovering" park skiing, they have a lot of maturing to do, hopefully they learn to respect others.

"Newschoolers.com is a very strong freeskiing community. They do a lot more to the sport then give it a bit of humor. You have great news articles that go into detail about things like SIA, Dew Tour, X-Games, Pro Signings, Smaller Events, IF3, and even to things like remembrance articles for people like Sarah Burke and CR Johnson. The news section on NS is just as good as any as the other ones listed. Now if you look at the Blogs you see many well keep blogs by different pros, mountains and various other industry folk. The Picture Section has many many pictures that help showcase the sport. The newly revamped Video Section is an amazing piece of coding. With HD video capability, User Channels, Playlists, and NSTV webisode series. Now you get into places like the forums where it isn't just NSG with its general crapola, but you have sections like Gear Talk, Media and Arts, Ski Gabber, and one of the Best Buy Sell Trade Forums in skiing entirely. Add on top of that reviews of gear , contests, and a amazingly large community that has a swing on many things. NS isn't your "How can you not find a 12-year-old kid making fun of Jossi Wells' steeze not funny?" bull you are trying to knock it off as.

That has to be the worse generalization I have ever heard. I just saw a pair of JJs on hear pretty much brand new, with a pair of FKS's for 400 bucks + shipping. Not to mention numerous other bits of gear I have found in B/S/T. I just bought my mom an 8 Gig iPod Nano in great shape for 30 bucks of S/T not to long ago. Worked great.

If you can't find a lot of your "Real Gear" on here, you might either be blind or just plain retarded.

Out of curiosity where else would you go? The only sites I could really think of besides buying things new of course, would be Craiglist, Ebay or TGR. Craiglist doesn't really work when you don't live in a ski town. Ebay is very hit or miss, and TGR, well I give you that, TGR is quite good in the gear department, but to sell NS B/S/T off as just for Jibeirsh, Sewn together hoodies, diecuts, and 360s games is just plain outrageous.
