Falling off the chairlift

so today i managed to fall about 6 feet off the chairlift, anybody else do this before?

Somewhat related; I've always wanted to jump off the chair that runs over the park from like 40 ft up, catch some tiny tranny and ride away. But the most likely ending to that scenario is that ski patrol clips the pass of my cold, dead, disemboweled body.

Last year a snowboarder fell off the chairlift nearly ON TOP of me as I was skiing. I was just carving on a groomer when a little kid landed 5 feet to my right as I was skiing under the lift. He was about 10 years old and fell right around 20 feet. I think he turned out ok other than getting the wind knocked out of him.

A 7 yearold just died at sugar bowl from falling 40ft. I know most of us dont use the bar, but for little kids I think It should be mandatory.

I kinda got pushed out of one once :D Right at the start though. My idiot gaper friend decided to scoot over one place (4er chair) leaving me like 5 cm of room to sit on, which obviously failed, leading to me jumping down like 4-5 feet on solid rocks. I was fine, but it kinda damaged my skis ^^
Also I jumped out of one before which was kinda fun

I fell off when I was 7 in vail on the old double near blue ox and highline... That shit is so scary its like 20 mph lift with no bar.

But seriously, why doesn't anyone close the bar? When the lift has to make an emergency stop it swings like up and down and you could easily fall off...

Last year I was at solitude on the far right lift that goes to the top. (forget the name) I unclipped my backpack belly strap to grab somethin and never reconnected it. Went to get off the lift and one of the buckles got caught on the lift. They didn't stop the lift till I was past the hub and dangling over that small cliff by just the backpack strap. I was straight shittin. There was alot of Poe but you could tell it was just jagged rocks under me. (plus I've seen it without snow). The angle it was holding me was such that I couldn't climb back up so I just started bouncing to get the strap to either release or break. It ended up releasing and I dropped a little ways. I did land on my skis by luck alone. No skill. I was for real shittin. Lol. My friends and one of the lifties were on the run side of the drop at that point sayin "that was so hardcore" haha. I played it off but I was soooo lucky.

They think it's cooler with bar up?

I.m.h.o. there is nothing cool about it, just stupid.
Even though the seats are at an angle: wet seats + outerwear = slippery.
Like you said in an emergency stop a chair can rock forwards and backwards + you can easily slip of.
It's also nice to have a place to put your feet, on a long lift ride the weight on your feet can be rather annoying.


Luckily it's mandatory in Europe to ride with the bar down especially considering where the French sometimes build lifts.

Also if a young kid is alone, the lifties ask experienced people to accompany them.

I jumped off a chairlift once and just got yelled at. It was at the lowest point on the whole lift and it was really close to the ground anyways.
Regardless I always put the bar down though. There's been plenty of times where the wind has really picked up and the chair has started swinging. I could've possibly fallen if the bar wasn't down. Plus I like to rest my legs by putting my feet on the ones that have the foot rests. Haha

One time i decided that i didnt want to sit with my friends on the chair (im a little crazy) and jumped off in the first 20 ft and walked away...The soft snow landing i saw turned out to be pretty solid

dude theres really no reason not to use the bar, it doesnt make you cooler, its less comforitable without it...and accidents happen regardless of how careful you are

I could be wrong but don't chairlifts have a stop and then like a emergency stop? Cause usually it gradually slows to a stop within a few seconds BUT A couple times it stopped extremely abruptly, like BAM, and guaranteed if I was leaning down to adjust my boots or w.e I would go off the front. I think most people haven't experienced that abrupt full stop, because it really throws you forward.

I was told that it was because of the bar with the footrest that caused the accident. Got his ski's caught under the foot rail, lent forward and slipped off. A sad story.

On a funnier note. I've swept myself off a chairlift. Snowy seat, shit pants. Went to swipe the snow and pretty much karate chopped my ass off the chair. I laughed. Sure everyone else did too.

I think there's a pretty long and recent thread about bar down or not and it was (mostly) North Americans arguing that bar down is oppression of freedom and actually more dangerous and (mostly) Europeans arguing it's there for a reason and saves lives.

I can't find it though, it was interesting stuff.
