North America vs Europe snow theory

it seems to me over the last few years, that when north america has an epic season, europe has a poor season

this year north america is having a predominantly poor season whereas europe has conditions which resemble last year in america, is there a pattern?

It's weird though, this season in Europe is great even though we don't have that much snow in the vallies.  Up on the mountain there's ton of snow. More than the avarage at that time.

It kinda sucks because if you'd like to hit urbans, there is not a chance of hitting any unless they are on the mountain. The powder is sick though. Thats the reason why i don't wanna complain.

Its really only the alps that have shitloads of snow. WHere I live (like 2 hour drive to the north from the beginning of the alps), we havent had any snow so far.

No way, Western Norway has too much snow atm. And it's still dumping..

OP; yeah, i've actually noticed the same thing. Even though some places in Europe surely doesn't have snow now, it's overall a way better season than last year (when the North America had a very good season)

I dunno.. I think its more that mother nature evens shit out. The Alps generally got under 2m of snow last season, and this season its got 5m of snow already. Combine it together and you get two average seasons.

Whereas N. America had a ridiculous season last year, and this year its pretty bad.. but average it out and its average snowfall.

I have no knowledge about meteorology so I'm prob talkin as much sense as a guy with a bag of dicks in his mouth right now

I feel i have to take the blame for this one.The last 3 years I wanted to come to the us but couldnt so it snowed like crazy over there and europe got fucked.Now that i have my ticket to CO it has snowed 18ft in a week in the alps and i've heard its shitty over there.Still i got a couple of nice runs

Can't speak for the rest of the continent, but I recently grabbed some Whistler accommodation and found from talking to the locals that it always kicks butt there over the rest of the world. I really don't think there is a back and forth in snowfall between the continents. Anyone ever seen the fake Whistler in Japan?

Amen to people who are pointing out it's just the alps. Northern spain sucks bum at the moment. Local hill was scheduled to open at the beginning of december but is still shut for no snow

There might be a meteorological connection. However, don't forget: the Alps have had the worst early season of all times and while the last snowfalls gave us epic conditions and might very well provide a good base even for Easter, by no means do we know whether it is going to continue dumping on during the next weeks and months.

Last Season was really poor. Saas Fee considered to close the summer ski resort because of lack of snow, however, they couldn't afford to close down. Due to a mild winter they had good conditions up there. We shredded pow in Summer (8 inches!) This season is  going to be different. They got tons of snow so far. I hope that will feed up the glacier and preserve them for a little longer.

I don't think its the temperature this year though. I think the weather systems are very varying. Last year the weather didn't change much and we always had similar weather systems.

NORTH AMERICa has not had much snow this year, I'm many places its been quite mild but other places the snow is dumping. from what I've heard zermatt in switzerland is pretty nasty this year!

it snowed for the second time all winter today, for like 10 minutes, mixed in with rain. flakes were huge and might as well have been liquid. now it's like 30 and 50mph winds. not cool bro.

Hahaha yeah me too. I chose the season 2009/10. They had el nino and the condtions were not the way I wouldve expected it. Pretty sure next year is gonna be a la nina year again. lets just go again :)

I think right now Austrian resorts have the best conditions in europe-they had a massload dump last week and forecasts say it's going to dump again this weekend.. so if in austria- i'd go for st. anton..
Also, conditions in rhone-alps area in france are damn good. Avoriaz isn't the highest of them (just around 2500m at the highest point) and we've got tons of snow everywhere. as for forecasts-supposed to dump this weekend. lower slopes in france in the last couple of days tend to be icey because we had a week of bluebird sky with low temps on night-time.

Anyways, most snow+best conditions in europe right now i'd probably go for
1. St. Anton (Austria)
2. Portes Du Soleil (France/Switzerland)- I'm actually staying there until feb. 4th
3. Espace Killy- Tignes&Val d'Isere (France)
