VOTE: Edits in ski gabber or not?

I vote to ban edits from ski gabber, and place pressure on us to make better ways to see new stuff that is out.

Obviously my vote is no videos in ski gabber.

Doug i've talk to you alot about this but I figured i'd summarize my views.

Posting videos in SG takes away from the video section, kids have gotten too used to seeing sick edits in the forums that they don't even look at the video section! its getting very bad, every other kid now things its cool to post their edit in the forums because everyone else is. Soon enough, SG is going to be so cluttered with edits its going to be terrible.

Some people suggested a video forum but this sucks because it will be like buy/sell but with videos. Threads are barely on the front page of B/S because everyone is bumping their own threads and burying other threads. This would not be a fair system and would not work at all.

I think the solution is more front page hype (since ALOT of people look at the front page right when they sign on) and create a more forum-like commenting system so that its easier to discuss videos within the comments. Also, a complete ban of videos in ski gabber (maybe post video of the day posted by an admin with a sticky? nothing more though) and encourage kids to go to the video section! with increased traffic their will be increased views and ultimately increased exposure. Combine NSTV into the bunch and NS will have the best video content section on the internet. BOOM

i think this is the most pertinent part. the comment section is built for comments, not for discussion. if discussion were possible in the comments section, people wouldnt need to post the edit in the forum. if someone posts the edit in the forum, discussion will commence, and that's fine. however, if edits are posted in the forum and bypass the videosection altogether, therein lies the problem.

I never really use the homepage :( sorry.

What I do notice and sometime click on though are the "Vids being watched" and "Pics recently viewed", but they're usually kinda meh... why not replace those with "Videos of the Day" and "Pictures of the day", thats just the top 5 or so of the day or week?

My personal experience is that the videos that are posted in SG are GOOD. REALLY GOOD. Versus when I go to the video section, I spend a good deal of time searching for the type of video I enjoy and that are actual quality (not to say that the video section does not have good videos)

The issue is ease. People like the idea of just clicking on the video versus having to search for it. Perhaps have sections that separate red name edits from others (I personally like the pro edits more) and then have sub-sections in the sections that already exist that separate videos by rating (possibly having polls instead of the star system?)

Would it be possible to make a feature as a sidebar that displays the newiest vids or somthing? But I vote to ban/delete vids in ski gabber, regardless of weather they are pro's or not

you see, i have the oposite experience, there are a bunch of edits put in SG that aren't worth of being in a thread but i see tons of way better videos in the video section.

This is also true. There are many videos in SG that are not worth the space in the forums. I believe that the system I proposed would be ideal but if it is not possible, then I say that the searching be a little more user friendly.

Regardless I think that edits should be banned from SG

How do you get to newschoolers then? Bookmark to the forums? In terms of that module we have an excellent idea for how to perfect it because I'm pretty sure that totally is the solution. It's just a bit more time to build it right. I'd say like at some point jan/feb we can do it and this will fix everything. For the time being though I'd say that the homepage change will both help views on content, and to make the homepage more relevant to someone who has been just bookmarking the forums. Maybe give a try passing through splash first and then hi,epage on your way to do what you want. I'd definitely say that we've done a lot lately to make it more relevant to what the site is all about.

The idea here is to make featured content on newschoolers more and more made up of stuff you guys post, and then subsequently rate up to the top. Eventually I'd like to see almost everything be like this, with a layer of pro content essentially mixed into it.

Although from what I've been seeing, pro content almost always floats to the top if it really is good.

Well TBH that has actually always been the philosophy. You guys probably just noticed a real dip in activity from us because we spent SO long building the fucking video system. :)

But yeah, I guess we also are trying to do a better job of featuring what members are doing. The talent level is totally insane. I mean look at NSTV. Honestly, all we did was organize things... everything was all there already.

When you funnel the noise down to a few things, the quality on this site is immense. People just get scared away because of the raw amount of shit you have to process in order to understand newschoolers.

I remember going to the video section first thing when I entered NS.
Videos in ski gabber just promote little ski crews to postwhore in a thread, recalling inside jokes that no one cares about.

i think the issue is discussing the videos, which is weird to do in commets sections.

you should have a separate section for videos of pros uploaded by pros or by filmmakers (people with orange names)

NS is just always open on my computer, I think I just have Ski Gabber bookmarked. 99% of the time I'm just cruising forums, I may be atypical in my use of NS however.

i was the same way.

i watched videos on this site for about 6 months, then in the summer when shit got boring in the video section i found the forums and then the store, and damn i wish i bought something, but thats a different topic.

but the thing is is why the common members that are recognizable on newschoolers are really only in the forums.

like ginko ns never leaves my computer screen, i used to never go to the splash page until i read the update that it received in a thread in site discussion.

also it is great to see that you guys are trying to make this more then a forum site, i like that the news is being updated constantly on the home page, so nice to see new things that are going on right on the home page.




now this part is a little far fetched, but can we start on the mobile site/app, i would gladly pay for a new app that really works well.

top videos is a great idea on the home page! it would also maybe be cool to include a link to the NSTV guide somewhere along there...people need to know that it exists and once they do hopefully use it. The format for the new video section is straight fire! and because of this all edits should be banned from SG...whether a pro put it there or not. If you are to delete a thread from ski gabber it should be a requirement to include a message along with that saying..."we are no longer allowing videos in the ski gabber forum (blah Blah), if you would like comments please post and upload videos to the new video section" maybe somewhere in there the inclusion of channels and the opportunity to be a part of the guide

I have absolutely NO PROBLEM with them. If its an ill video, and deserves discussion, its chill when its in ski gabber.

On the other hand when some kid is like "dude check out my sponsor edit!!111!!" thats when it can be deleted. But when someone is promoting something cool that SOMEONE ELSE did, theres nothing wrong with that

i spent easily two years doing that, had NO idea there was a forum section (i believe i lurked since early 07, made an account in 08, and didnt post till like end of 08). I'm sure plenty of people are the same way!

ban! to the person who said we don't yell at pros... have you seen us pro-banners shitting on shlopy's thread? i mean his edit was good but a lot of people still made it clear that he should use the video section.

PROPOSING IDEA: we should get a message in our inbox every time someone comments on a video of yours. "you have a new comment on your video, "x video"." but it will only send you another one for that video if you've read the message.

example: say you sign on and 4 people comment on your video. you read the single message that was sent and the comments, then sign off again. 3 more people have commented when you sign back in, and 2 on another video. 2 messages this time, one for each video.

possibility? could work for other people's videos that you've already commented on as well? total shit idea? idk.

If possible, I think you should include a button on the NS player (when embedded) that you can press that takes you to the original video's home page. If there is one, I'm just too dumb to find it.

The problem with this is that then the video section would not be used because all of the pro edits everyone watches would be in SG. I feel that 0 edits should be allowed in SG regardless of wether or not it is a pro edit.

I feel that the pro edits should get their own sub section of the movie section, that way the Video section is still utilized and things are a little easier to sort through

you just contradicted yourself. let pros have their own video section, and who's going to want to go to the regular video section? the only solution is a blend of all the edits in the same place, so that even smaller edits from unknown people get seen and recognized.

Most of the edits in SG are Pro edits. That is apparent.

Here is my solution. Give the Pros their own video section. THEN, sort the remaining videos using a new rating system (A,B,C,D)
That way, the Pro edits, the edits that are highly rated and the "B" edits get a lot of traffic because they are better. This solution solves the issue at hand and makes the search throughout the video section a lot easier.

My apologies for not clarifying the rest of my idea.

I respectfully disagree. I look at more edits from people on the site than from pros. If they DID make a pro edit section, I think that it would get the same amount of traffic that the A rating video section (don't understand? Read my other post) there are kids on this site that make killer edits and some are better than those that the pros put out. So I don't see this as being an issue. A sectiong where the pros put their edits would just make thongs easier to get to. Did I shit on your idea? No. Don't do so with mine.

How about a mass PM, saying that videos are no longer allowed in Ski Gabber? Continue by saying the ramifications (warnings, bans etc.) and there you have it.

Just like the uploader PM, you can't say you didn't see it.

I think this makes the most sense, because you can't exactly upload an edit that's not your own to the video section. Just my 2 cents.
