Yeah the idea here was to focus absolutely everything we had on giving a smooth viewing experience. Its like regular TV - shit just works and isn't a PITA to navigate.
As for the unexpectedness... well this is the culmination of about 2.5 years work. It took way more than we anticipated to lay the groundwork for this. That is pretty much the reason that NS has probably started to feel a bit stale as of late... we haven't been able to work on much else while building this.
The absolute best part is if you have a media center computer hooked up to a living room TV. You need a mouse/touchpad type device, but most people who have these will have that hooked up. It works great and all of a sudden you have all kinds of content to watch in your living room.
I personally use the Logitech Dinovo Mini, which has a bit of a clunky touchpad, but it fits in great in the living room.
