only thing that bugs me is a lack of an obvious way to close the guide once you open it (we were talking about this on the facebook page). An "X" in the top left or right would be nice. other than that, its fucking awesome

So the little thing is that to get out of the 'guide' menu when you a watching a video is that the big button 'NSTV GUIDE' is actually not that easy to find if you don't know that it is there.

I was expecting to find a link/button in the guide menu that said 'close guide' or 'return to video' to get out of it.

Once you figure it out it seems really easy, but it felt strange not finding a function to close the guide.

Yeah makes sense. You can just click the button in the control bar on the video which is still playing, but I agree with you. We'll add this.

Yes you can just click the button in the video player, but it is initially hidden so you kind go out on an adventure to find it the first time.

This is really cool. I feel like it's definitely going to encourage me to watch content that I don't usually see. Since everything is all neat and together in one place. Great job guys.

Yeah the idea here was to focus absolutely everything we had on giving a smooth viewing experience. Its like regular TV - shit just works and isn't a PITA to navigate.

As for the unexpectedness... well this is the culmination of about 2.5 years work. It took way more than we anticipated to lay the groundwork for this. That is pretty much the reason that NS has probably started to feel a bit stale as of late... we haven't been able to work on much else while building this.

The absolute best part is if you have a media center computer hooked up to a living room TV. You need a mouse/touchpad type device, but most people who have these will have that hooked up. It works great and all of a sudden you have all kinds of content to watch in your living room.

I personally use the Logitech Dinovo Mini, which has a bit of a clunky touchpad, but it fits in great in the living room.

I like it.

But it does have an issue... The Channel Search. I don't know if it's just me, but even if I type "salomo" or "nipwit" or "travellin" it gives me nothing.

Everything has to be completely written out and might hinder views for some channels and not just the obscure ones, I think that might be something to look into in the future (as well as with the searchbar issues).

We're heading out for Christmas on friday, so likely we wont' make any major changes before the holidays.

What we really want is for you guys to jump in there over the holidays and enjoy some lean-back ski video goodness. After you've spent some time with it, then we can get a round of suggestions going.

I have been watching this thing constantly for weeks. You get a different feel for it when watching it over time, or having it on the TV with your buddies after a day of skiing.

The system uses a fulltext search instead of straight string matching.  Fulltext is much faster for large blocks of content (blogs, forums, etc..), but can only search full words.

In this case, the number of channels is small and the titles are short.  We can probably change the search to straigt string matching so searching for "salo" would find "salomon".

You can currently click the 'guide' button in the control bar of the player. Once you do it twice or so its super easy, but I agree a close button would be good.

Man, I just got lost in old episodes of travelling circus, and the stuff that the LifeSteeze media guys uploaded.

Goodbye 1 hour of potentially productive NS work. Whoops.

I'm in love with this new system. Only complaint is that I wish that when you're in fullscreen and open the guide, it'd be nice if it opened without taking you out of fullscreen.

Yeah sorry, that is a dream for the future, but sadly a present impossibility. That is a whole flash vs. HTML5 vs. Javascript issue... and believe me we tried to get it working that way.

For now, you work the guide and NSTV as they lie on the page. Full screen is what you click into to watch the video in big goodness.

Yeah, basically as soon as you get into 'full screen' which means a bazillion different sized monitors... you have a whole set of design challenges which are difficult. Not impossible, but difficult and just out of budget for the first version of this thing.

NOTE:

NSTV works like a charm on the iPad.

Try it.

We aren't going to be doing gigantic hype around this yet, but what we ask of people is if you like it... try firing up NSTV the next time you're looking to pop a ski DVD in and watch something.

Seriously though, the idea with this is to give you something where you can lean back after your exams and just enjoy some ski content. Its lean-back vs. lean-forwards.
