"The Academy Question"

alright, i just got my new freeze and damn was i stoked. now, i flipped through it first to see pictures and to see what kinda stuff was in it. now i was even more stoked when i saw all the kids i know in this article, but i just flipped through it. then i took the time to read it, and it just pissed me off, quite a bit.
when i say this, it's mostly about Mike Gutt's comment on the academies after seeing Matt Phillipi's run and then Silas Miller's run(funny, cause i was told he didn't even attend WSI...)
anyways...the remark that pissed me off was:
'Back at Blackcomb, Gutt shakes his head as Silas Miller follows Matt Phillipi's run with one that is nearly identical. 'this is my point about the academies' he explains. 'These boys have a huge bag of tricks and are super-talented, but it seems like they learn a stunt, check it off their list, and move on wihtout taking the time to refine it or inspire a variation that makes it entirely their own.........'
there's some more after that, but it's pointless basically
now, i ski with these kids quite often, and i have attended a ski academy, and basically everything Gutt says is rediculous. First off, i know for a fact that all these kids have their own unique pipe runs, ESPECIALLY Phillipi. And about the check it off their list statement, that is the most rediculous part, i know that when i learn a trick i try many different things, and i'm only like 1/3 of the skier these kids are, so they work hard and they definately make their tricks unique and have their own steeze to them.

This may be irrelevant to all/most of you, but this articale did nothing but make me angry really. The only people who knew what they were talking about were the people that attend the schools/the coaches.
Also, i am not attacking Mike Gutt either, i'm sure he's a nice guy and everything, but his statement was just totally off, and i know the kids i ski with agree with me.

ya its def true acadimies arnt doin anything bad for the sport and learning a trick and checking it off ur list wtf that has nuthing to do with being in accadamie and if i tryed to do that my coach would be like wtf ur not doining it in a comp u look like a fucking jackass, plus style is all individual. its just dumb saying these kids have no style

yeah fo reaaaal jeffry!!! they're just pissed that cva, wva, and the east coast are gonna kill it next year..... also, gutt makes a comment that academy kids doen't have their own style.. and then goes on to say that pros such as pep and abma created their own style in the park on their own.. however.. I do believe that pep went to the lowell whiteman school in steamboat.. sooooooo yeah nice job gutt.. (however, like jeffry.. i don't know gutt and im sure he is a cool guy).. alsooooo... speaking of acadmemy kids.. alex balsen wasn't mentioned and i think he is by far one of the most stylish riders out there.. so yes.. ohh yes.. fuck that article...

well i think its very unfair that these kids get to ski all winter because they have more money than the rest of us. They are good skiers but if you look at Dan Marions pipe run, it was nothing like Tanner, Jon, or Simon. In my opinion it didnt even compare, but thats my opinion, i know i will get flamed for that but Dan Marion had very little style compared to the medalists.

i agree jeff. when i flipped through first and saw the pictures of all the cva and wva guys i thought it was awesome. when i read the article later i was kind of like why the hell did they bother printing this shit.

jeffs totally right...their all unique skiers...phillippi has a sick back to back um...flair or something, i forget...and Solbergs corked 9 or whatever definately looks like nothing anybody else does in the pipe (i might be naming the wrong tricks) Vanulars got great style...none of these kids are 'just learning shit and not refining it' like jeff noted..their all DAMN good skiers, and its not fair what they wrote..but the pictures and Freeze spread is definately sick

holy monkey dyke unawesomeness!!! academy kids having no style. my answer to that is....vanny, marion, phillippi (don't know about spelling), silas, balsen, jp, danny, taylor, and lots of others. fuckin damn straight biatches. infact i'd say that we (those who have attended ski academies) who ski everyday in the winter develop crazy style from skiing in every condition, cold hot slush ice all that crazy sheeeze. and yes as my steeeezey man clarke put it....the east coast is goin to fuckin erupt this year and destroy everything that is not east coast like holy jeeeezems fo sheeezums eeezums. hollla nig

I tend to disagree. I love all those dudes, and do think they have a very different style. But their pipe runs SEEM very repetitive. They don't seem to take the risk of throwing something unique in the pipe as some other skiers do.

^ yes, their comp pipe runs are pretty similar to what they always do, but thats cause their trying to go with what they know they can stick and really impress with...ive seen phillippi throw shit in the pipe completely different from his regular comp run...but i cant blame them at all with sticking with whats GOOD for them

someone like dumont can really throw a 22 foot trick outta the pipe and get recognition, if someone like Phillippi tried that and didnt stick it, it just wouldnt be the same i dont think..their runs are all sick though

i cant really talk but from what i have heard people say to stick to my own style cauz kids always end up having the same style at these academys, i really cant answer to this thread cauz i dont have much knowledge towards this

how can you judge someone who goes to an academy differently from someone who is home-schooled to ski, or someone who has early out everyday to go ski with their teams.. I don't find them any different. There really is no comparison between kids. One kid will have style, and another one won’t, and it’s not because they are attending ski academies. It’s just how sports go…

Also, how in anyway is it bringing down the sport? What is wrong with it?

i think Phillippi/Silas/JP/Vanular all have great style..i dont even think its a question...its not a really NOTICEABLE style, but its definately not robotic 'learned by repitition and not by skill' type of style

no i wasnt...everything ive ever done i have done myself...school, car, college, move to whistler...everything I have paid for out of my pocket. If had a job since i was 12 years old. Not once have i ever had my parents shell out of my 'trust fund' to have me do something. I have made it this far successfully and i take great pride in that. so eat it.

yes they did talk about tricks and style, but thats not what the article was focused on. they said that the problem with academies was the pressure of competition. freeskiing doesn't mean compitition, it means FREE-skiing. they just dont want it to turn into moguls in the next 20 years. they dont want a system where only the super rich can have a chance to have a name. all those guys are super good at skiing tho

i just dont see the issue...i dont think these academies are ever gonna turn mogul style...these arent just for rich kids, they have scholarship programs, and id imagine some parents take loans out for their kids to go

my parents make about 60,000 a year (not nearly enough to afford for me to go to a ski academy), im 20 now, but if i really wanted to go, i know they woulda found a way

i think academys are great...look at all the new names popping up....ive seen Vanular tear up an entire park/bc jump...they do just as much freeskiing as competing

i know that the article was more about the schools are more comp-driven, but that was the thing that pissed me off, so i posted about it
and i went to WVA, and there are numerous kids that don;t compete, the coaches like it if we do, but it's not like they force up to compete

I agree that its not fair about the rich kids that are able to go to sports academies also becuz they are not offered everywhere. But there is no fucking reason to bash Mike Gutt you asshole. just my two sense...

I have seen kids at WVA not compete more then a couple times the entire winter. I have seen almost the entire WVA team focus on JUST having style all the time. Balsen doesn't have a style like anyone else. most of them don't. granted, they're not pep, tanner, or simon, but then again, look at everyone else out there, and they aren't either.

I thought the article was ridiculous, because from what I know from skiing with kids form WVA and having a friend attend, the coach there doesn't push you to do anything. it's almost all entierly uoi're own choice. tehre is a lot of freedom in freeskiing at acadamies.

except for jeff kiesel. he isn't free. he's expensive.

balsen has doooope style. and the confidence and balls to go with it. does an academy give you that? he was the first one at the mt snow jibfest to attempt the hut jib. all the others just sat back and watched while he started it. some other 'rail specialists' didn't even attempt to hit it.

bottom line is that all of those guys rip. all have awesome style and an incredible bag of tricks. why not keep your pipe run at a bunch of tricks you know you can stomp. is this like the tanner hall switch rodeo 7 deal all over again. you want someone to go try and throw something new in a comp. i don't think so. you bring your best and what you know to a comp to try and win. when you get something new dialed in out of comps then you bring it to the comp.

and mckeeman...shut the hell up about this rich kid private school bullshit. i went to private school for 5 years. why? not because i'm some little rich bitch, but because of where i lived the public schools were absolute shit.

after phillipi won the ec freeskiing open qp comp he said he was giving the money he won back to cva. he said he was at cva greatly in part to a scholarship they gave him and he wanted someone else to be able to have the chance cva gave him.

Ok, While it is expensive to go to an academy, skiing is also an expensive sport. Most of the freeskiers I know(all) have parents who are rich, or at least well off. So the people who are saying that academies are only for rich kids, just skiing is pretty expensive as well.

i forgot all about phillippi and that...he gave all his winnings to the scholarship program so someone who didnt have rich parents could get the same oppertunities they have...for a 17 (i think) year old kid to give an assload of money back to his school for scholarship programs tells ALOT about these kids...man if i ws 17 and won THOUSANDS of dollars, id have it spent before i knew what to do with it

on the note of Anthony: my parents make under 50 grand a year, my sister goes to Amherst (40,000 a year) and I'm still most likely going to academy. there's a way for everything

and about how can you judge them differnetly than any other homeschooled kid? i don't know about everyone else, but I'd go to academy for the COACHING! THAT is how you can judge them differnetly for 4 hours every day they're on snow with SICK SICK coaches! being homeschooled and having your dad bring his 210's with you once a week isn't the same kinda coaching

yeah. that article pissed me off too. for some reason people think that any organizing body that could possible have control over our sport will kill it, but that's just people who have no idea what they are saying. snowboarding isn't dead.

im from ontario, cva is the only way i can ski as much as i do. i think that article is horrible,it was so off. what they said in that article about ski academy kids having no style is so off. the only time gutt saw us ski was in competition. whats wrong with doing a comp run that feels good to you? he has know idea how much time we spend on tricks, that statement was just like jeff put it,........... 'off'

that whole issue of only rich kids being able to go to academy is such BS, they have scholarships and whatever, and what's wrong with a program being based on competitions? that gives the kids like, more drive behind what they do.....word

whoever said you have to have money to ski, not true, my parents dont pay for my skiing. maybe i'll get a new jacket for christmas or something, but i work in a ski shop so i can afford new equipment, and work as an instructor to get a free season pass

that article is just fuckin retarted sayin that they are killing freeskiing, if these kids are so bad and unstyle why do they win? because they do have style. and you dont have to be loaded to got to an accadamie if u parents can get u throuh collage they can aford an acadaime. the article at no point justfies how they are killing freesking cause they win? cause they put empahis on compition? plenty of kids compet just as much as the acadime kids who only ski with teams on weekends. its notposible for acadamies to kill the sport if the fis cant do it they sure as hell cant so stop bitching that there gona ruin the sport all they can do is make it beter by helping to creat skier who will keep raising the bar and adding new kids into the sceen.
