No its not, its based on pure fact. Best snow = lightest snow = lowest % of water in the snow. japan has 3% which is fucked up, utah/wyoming/montana is 5-7% and its fucked up light.

Best snow=lightest snow is what anyone in Utah is going to preach. Pure marketing. But a hell of a lot of coastal skiers like myself would WAY rather have snow with some density and substance. So yeah, it's subjective. Would Alaska be close to as incredible as it is if it received 3% snow? No way.

Light powder is the best snow on earth if you like low angle pow skiing. If you want steeps, you want wetter, denser snow. That's why 99% of real big mountain ski footage comes out of coastal zones.

Tough call. Having lived in Utah and Japan...I would sayyyyyyy...Japan. It's more consistent. Utah is very sick but can be a hellion when it comes to consistency.

I've been fortunate enough over the years to ski all over the world. There's def places I haven't been to and it's because I'm ex mil (inb4 spoiled brat post), but I've always said Japan has the most epic snow. Sucks what happened there though. Ya won't see me makin a trip back there anytime soon. I guess glow in the dark snow is good though. Ya dont need lights for night skiing right? Damn shame. Gorgeous country and super friendly locals too.

I fully agree about the snow in Japan being epic, but why wouldn't you go back? It's safe as long as you don't go to Fukushima, and Hokkaido is 600kms from there. I have lived there in the winter for 3 years now, and am definitely going back.

Yeah....the whole country isn't contaminated. If you don't go to Japan because you are afraid of getting radiation poisoning I am very sorry for you indeed. I'll keep living in Hokkaido and if you ever decide against your unfounded opinion I would be happy to show you around the most fun playground of snow ever.

I seriously don't trust it. The jap gov has been caught lying multiple times about the rad levels and scope. There's a few independent scientists who have said it is a far worse situation than what is being led on. I dunno. Jus not taking any chances. I would prob only go there to ski and if there's any way rads would get locked up and sent to the ground it would be snow for sure. I'm sure you'd be fine but I don't want to have a five assed kid a few years down the road either ya know? Pretty sure north america is being blanketed in alot of it anyway now. If you look at the rad maps NA is def gettin rocked. I mean since it happened the epa has upped the allowable rad levels in water, food, etc about 3 times now. No joke look it up. Scary stuff.

@mitchpee(sorry on app) but yeah I've been there like I said before. And it's super sick. Some of the best backcountry ever. You can jus pull off the side of the highway and hike ten minutes into sheer craziness. So don't get me wrong I'm not knockin it. But even if it was a totally free trip. I still wouldn't go. I've seen way too many nongov scientists talking about how bad it is. It's all good though if it doesn't bother you. You'll be hittin some good stuff for sure and I'm jealous.

Irwin COLORADO! There's obviously better snow in the world, but to me Irwin's got some of the best BC skiing in Colorado and amazing powder, and it's a place i like to call home!

No, it's coming from someone who lived in the Rockies for a couple of seasons and moved to Tahoe specifically to get to coastal snow.

In my opinion, light pow is better than coastal snow in just two respects:
1) it looks better in photos
2) it's easier to shovel

You REALLY would rather ski 3ft of heavy, sierra snow then 3ft of blower utah/montana/wyoming snow? you're high. I understand heavier snow is great for shredding lines and shit, i'm not an idiot, but to say you'd rather ski deep wet snow is stupid. Id rather ski deep light snow or maybe 6-12 inches of heavier snow on more technical, steep terrain. Fair?

There really is no comparison.

I ski baker and we get cement for most the winter, and when i take a trip to BC, Utah, Colorado i am blown away by the density of the snow, or lack of it. It's truly unbelievable.

Tahoe snow isn't bad for about until a week or two after it falls. then it melts, re-freezes and repeats about 30 times till it's ice.

But when you go to kirkwood on a powder day it's amazing.
