Questions on NS favorite brand of car ... Subaru

I am considering buying a Subaru Impreza 5 door 2.5i and have a few questions. how are they in the snow? can you fit skis in back? are they quick at all ? are they roomy inside(easily fit 5 people)? and what is the difference between normal impreza and the outback sport? any response would be appreciated!

p.s. if you have read all my other threads, yes, i know i am very indecisive.

I can answer yes to all of your questions except for the last one.

They are 4wd so they will handle fine in snow and are generally pretty roomy cars. Just buy a ski rack to put on top also.

Oh and on a related note, I saw a 2012 blacked out STI 5 door the other day and I swear I was on the verge of jizzing my pants.

The difference between premium and regular isn't much. Pretty minor, just different wheels, more speakers maybe some other things i can't think of. When it comes to space, what i've noticed is the Impreza SEDAN is a lot smaller than my Legacy sedan, but the hatchback could be different. If you don't have people in the back putting your seats down and sliding the skis in should be pretty easy, but a rack on top would be needed if you're gonna have people in the back seat, so you should get the mounting bars if you plan on getting a rack

ya man there tight. i wanna sti 5 door which is the same thing. plus my friend drives us up to the mountin in one of those and we fit multiple skis in it

get a box if u go for the roof option. then at the end of the day your wet boots, gloves, pant, all that stuff can go in there along with your skis so your car doesnt have to get smelly and wet and gross on the ride home.

also ive heard of peoples skis and snowboards getting chipped and damaged from rocks flying up and hitting their equipment on the highway, that they have in the racks(not a box, racks). so if your gonna be driving freeways or anything over 60, id get a box.

dude.. i got an 08 impreza 5 door.. i love it. it conquers snow and back before i had ski racks i could fit my skis in the back. it is quite roomy but the back seats can get cramped occasionally.. but like the only difference between an impreza and an outback sport would be the outback has seat warmers, and is about 5k more expensive.. so yeah stick with an impreza.. super awesome car

...but costs heaps more for parts when you inevitably need to fix them.

I'd buy a VW with AWD over an audi for the 10-15% cheaper parts alone.

technically, you're right, but I'd be willing to be it'd be near impossible to find one for sale that's not AWD right now. I believe starting in 1992 (maybe as late as 1994, could be wrong) every subaru sold in the US was AWD. they're coming out with a joint venture with toyota within a year or two that will not be AWD, but it's not for sale yet.

I have an 09 2.5i premium 5 door. I've fit 5 people with 4 days worth of clothes and ski gear in the car with 10 pairs of skis up top. it was by no means comfortable for anyone in the back seat. for day trips to the ski area, or even overnight trips, you'd be fine with 5 people. once you start packing clothes and gear for several days, the trunk fills up quickly and gear ends up on peoples' laps in the back seat. for what it is though, it's great in the snow if you have decent tires and turn traction control off, and it gets reasonable gas mileage compared to a lot of other AWD/4WD options. the premium gives you a better sound system, sunroof, and possibly leather seats now, so it's your call as to whether that's worth it or not, but i thoroughly enjoy driving home from skiing on a warm spring day with the roof open. also, get a yakima rack, not the stock subaru one. it locks on, and your rack options are infinite compared to with the stock rack. the bars are also stronger and you can put a fairing on it with lots of stickers so you can look cool when you pull into the lot.

my experiences with subaru....

1st drove a wrx sti and felt like a boss

2nd drove a legacy and felt like a lesbian. i think a sewing machine could get up to 60 mph faster than that car.

drive a gt or a 3.6r and your opinion of the legacy may change... ripped around in a outback 3.6r with three freeride bikes on the roof this weekend through the mountains and it felt plenty speedy to me. the 3.6 has torque for days.

AUDI.

the quattro is beast, and IMO so much better built, looking and drivable then Subaru.

My personal favorite: 2001 audi s4 avant. (bottom two have different bumper/grill.)

subarus are the shit for the price, audis may and prolly are better built but that shit gets so expensive to fix and insurance for them is a joke, so thats why i stick with subaru

i got a 2000 outback 5 speed and i love it, living in tahoe so tons of snow and its a blast, defiantly wouldn't consider it fast but it still has enough power to zip around town, handles amazing and gets decent gas mileage.

driving my friends sti just makes me depressed once i go back to my outback

why yes I do. i'm basically a sucker for all audi's. My favorite is the 2001 cause it's just old enough to be cheap, like 5,000 used. but new enough that it has all the modern luxuries like heated seats, moon/sun roofs, and power stuff.



this is the s4 I mentioned. just a little upgraded. haha.

Well I drive a WRX, but between these two I'd go with the premium and just get a couple of options on it.

If you're gonna get a standard transmission the STi short throw shifter and bushing are definitely worth it.
The all weather mats and cargo tray are worth it since it saves the carpets, especially after a day of skiing.
The footwell illumination kit looks sick and it's fairly cheap, but that's up to you.
As far as audio, I have the smaller subwoofer under the drivers seat, and it still puts out pretty good bass, and its half the price of the one that goes in the trunk.

That's just what I'd do. Oh and for snow get a set of Bridgestone Blizzacks on it and you'll be able to drive through anything.

it was probably an '11 or something, my brother has been trying to order a 2012 STI sedan but subaru of america wont take orders yet for some reason, unless your in canada, they are already at dealerships in canada

I think the legacy is an underrated car in the subaru line up. I have owned a legacy and a forrester. I liked the legacy much much more. More room and I felt it was better in the snow. However I am referencing cars that are 12-14 years old now. Things might have changed in that amount of time.

I agree... the Legacy GT from the mid-late 90's was probably one of the best cars out there top to bottom you'll find (at least if you had one with a good headgasket - but many of those were covered under warranty anyways)

Plus... god damn they looked hot... Simple, but really well styled.

yeah more or less agree, they are kewl.

my only gripe is ground clearance (which is why subaru made the outback), AWD doesn't help much when you're high-centered.

i got a 99 impreza in march so i havn't drven it in the snow yet, but its an awesome car and it done well in the rain so far. everyone ive talked to says its awesome in the snow. go with the subaru definently

not to threadjack but I have 6 grand and really want a Subaru since i live in Utah. I'm really digging the Forester and impreza and finding a solid amount for sale in my price range but based on experience when is too much mileage too much for buying used? I want to stay in the 115,000 or under .

subbies will last forever. My old legacy went to the wrecker at 274xxx miles because the fan motor broke and was straight dangerous to drive during the winter or rain. bought a forrester at around 170xxxish still drives really well. and that's in MN. So much salt on our roads.

ive got the 2011 impreza outback sport. it has all the nicer features (e.g. ipod usb plugin, bluetooth, sat radio compatible, better rims, better interior material). I havent had the chance to drive it in the snow yet, but i freaking love this car. If you are looking for a good sturdy car that can accomodate to everything but going really fast like the sti, then this is your best bet
