We have a TON more flexibility to do this kind of a thing now. That's part of the fun updates, if we want to try adding various different categories we can. There's a massive amount of flexibility of the system which is now in place.

For sure. I don't have a very good understanding of how that type of stuff works, and I know it all takes a lot of work, I just know that it was a feature that a lot of people utilized.




As I said, I just uploaded a video, so this will put the new system to the test.

Im impressed, big step!!!

I would really like if the embedded videos could have icons as well because of the increased size, although that may be redundant if you guys are still trying to push video uploads as opposed to external hosting...

I mean I get what you mean, but this is the problem with externally hosted media. We can't interface with it... its not video its just embed code.

That's what makes this hard - embedded video is philosophically video, but from a code perspective it is just text. We can't work with it.

Ideally people will start using our system a lot more, and less videos will be embedded. If they don't, then we'll figure out something to meet in the middle.

Well - was it a feature that a lot of people utilized? Playing devils advocate, we have only had a few people in here say they don't like it.

I might be completely wrong, and again... if everyone tells us next week that this is horseshit and they want latest videos.. then we'll add it.

Send me your email address. I'd like your help testing our new desktop upload app. Its still in private beta, but we need a few guys like you to help us test it.

You could be right. In my experience, people mainly look at either latest videos or top rated. I've never met anybody who prowls the rail section specifically. I'm sure people do, but I just think it's probably a minority.

I'm probably looking at it more from the perspective of a filmmaker. The most recent section is a great way to help my work get seen.

You may not be hearing many complaints because A. people are primarily focused on the player itself right now, and B. the top rated section still exists. So for most people, they're still going to be able to see a new Tom edit or a new TC, and they're happy. Regardless of the new layout, videos like that will still get tons of exposure. But for people like me who aren't able to film with big name skiers all the time, I feel as though it might be significantly more difficult to get my content out there. But who knows, only time will tell.

uh? My edit is gone. I know you guys were saying that shit will disappear then come back a little later on. I'm assuming it should all be back since the updates over. I really don't care that its gone I mean its still on my comp. But im just wondering whats going on?

Whoops - no its 768mb now, so you should be able to upload something bigger.

The desktop upload app will have a much larger limit... though we have not yet determined what the max we'll be able to do through that.

Personally, I would like it when you click on somebody's videos on their profile page, "videos and embedded" would be standard instead of just NS videos

We have zero control over embedded videos. Having huge support for embedded videos completely destroys the video experience standards. People can embed stuff which messes with page width, size, plays... whatever.

We just want to get a product that's good enough that you guys will be happy uploading to the site. That makes it so much easier to have a really slick video experience.

Embeds are for the forums.

Yeah and its way better. You get view counts no matter where the video is - whether embedded on an external site, in the forums, in the video section or in NSTV.

I love it. I'm one of those people who like to search videos by category and this new layout is making me very happy. Great job guys, thanks for putting all the effort into making it better.

Ok gotcha, I am definitely going to upload to the site now. I'm stoked on the 720p and the changes.

I take it once everyone is satisfied with NS as the video host and problems are at a minimum, you guys are going to stop the embed option besides in threads?

Well, I uploaded a video hours ago, it said the upload completed, I entered in all the info and it said 'media saved,' and said it was encoding. Here we are at 9:30, and still no video. Not off to a good start with this new video player!


Also, I see my karma has 'mysteriously' gone down like 30,000 points or something.

thats still based on rating. He means based on the view. some video might not be top rated but could be the most viewed at 200k but only have a 8.5 rating for example so it wouldnt come up on top rated for quite a few pages. it would give another great selection of videos to sort through.

you should request different ads from vitamin water or another sponsor.

gus kenworthy is cool and all but it gets annoying if you're surfing through the video section admiring the new player.

as for the player, it is awesome! I still have yet to really dive into the new media section, but that is on the agenda. I am also really excited to see this new desktop uploader. That sounds very helpful.

I lost over half of my videos, almost all of them. Are they coming back ? I really hope they are. Karma dropped from 116K to 68K.

everything seems awesome! quite happy about it.

the main thing with the video section I don't like though is the autoplay. that can be super frustrating on slow connections.

can you explain why a video of mine with 5k views and almost 100 ratings on it was deleted causing me to lose almost 5000 karma points? right now i am fucking pissed

Well... we'll see when we get there.

I don't mind leaving support for the embeds in there if people really, really, really want it... but the experience will be far better without it.

Also to anyone who is missing videos, comments, karma or ratings... hold tight. The import didn't go as well as we had thought, so a few of these things failed.

Nothing will be lost, everything will come back... just sit tight, Paul is working on it.

Also note to those who have noticed things they deleted coming back - we're sorry. This is because it has taken more than a month to import all the old stuff into the new system. Some things which were imported 30 days ago, you deleted during that time, and the old copy will have transferred over. We did a super careful job at making sure that this would only happen to a few media items that we couldn't catch... but a few will slip through on us.

We're extremely sorry for the inconvenience.

Sorry, the video encoder is hugely backed up. We had to throw something nuts like 20,000 videos at it, so it will take a bit to catch up. Same with some of your old media, it is currently encoding.

Once that happens encoding will be extremely quick.

since forum pages are so long maybe you can add another side bar on the right(where there are ads, blogggers, team updates, ect) that has the 4 top videos being currently watched.

as far as the video pages look I think theyre great and im loving the better quality! Great job NS, love to see your enthusiasm for the site and community

I'd like to see the latest video listing back. I like to run down the list, not specifically looking for any type or anyone's video in particular. Just watch whatever catches my eye. Maybe a specific skier, trick, location. It's real fun to see and discover all different types of edits...what people are up to... unfiltered.

I don't know if this has been said already, because I didn't read the thread - oh well, yeah I should know better - but I HATE that videos posted to the NS uploader are viewed "separately" from those that are embedded to the site. Just because the NS uploader blows (or because Vimeo is so much better, take your pick), doesn't mean that our videos should be alienated and harder to get to. Right now the default is seeing all the NS-uploaded videos, not the latest ones in general. I hate that.

Other than that? I guess it's pretty cool. Glad you guys are making moves to improve the site. Much love.

a lot of people only went on that part of the site , idk , the NS display had been like that forever and it worked out really well


and like will start said previously , ns is not like vimeo or youtube , its a completly different website
