Alright, I was wondering whether it's a bad idea to spray waterproofing spray on things that supposedly have a DWR coating on them. I have a patagonia backpack that does, and I suppose i'd consider doing my columbia coat that I ski in (omg it's not saga). Is it possible that I may make waterproofing worse by spraying something else on there?
You are not going to hurt your backpack but you may not need to treat it. DWR stands for durable water repellent and is usually applied at the factory by washing it in or spraying it on. So effectively you are just adding more with spray on waterproofing. Just try to avoid silicon based waterproofing, if they are even out there anymore, and for anything unlined, like your backpack, go with the wash in styles like NixWax TX Direct. However, before you do anything throw your backpack in the drier for 30 minutes or so. Heat refreshes DWR coatings and will drastically improve how it works. You might notice that the DWR has worn completely off in high wear areas like shoulder straps, if they were treated, and you can address those areas individually if you need to with spray waterproofing.
