Eagle Scout

I'm just wondering if there are any Boy Scouts/Eagle Scouts that can answer a question I have. I was a Boy Scout up until I was 12-13 and it was a pretty good time, but I didn't really have time for it. I couldn't go on that many camping trips or anything due to Baseball and Soccer games on the weekend. I dropped out in 7th grade and I truly regret it. I was just wondering if it is possible for me to go back and finish what I need to do to become an Eagle Scout? I just turned 16. If i can't, it's fine but I was just wondering and I assumed there would be a few Eagle Scouts or future Eagle Scouts on Newschoolers. Thanks!

Me in like a year.

My troop is huge and everything we do has to be perfect, so its really hard to get in my town.

if you're 16 you can definitely do it. you've still got time, you just have to finish before you're 18

There's only a few required merit badges that I don't already have. What else is there to do besides the final project and stuff like that?

what class r u? depending on that, u might have troubles as far as time requirements, and u should know what a board of review is, they do them every rank advancement after tenderfoot

If you're not a star by now then it will be hard to get it done before you turn 18. I got mine last year and its nice to be done with it.

I have to finish this merit badge that requires 3 months of charting my income/expenses. I've got enough time until I turn 18, but I really want to get it before college application time.

i am an eagle scout. boy scouts wasn't very cool, but the process of getting the eagle scout award is. you have until your 18, and i would recommend going for it

I got mine at age 15 and now finishing up the palms. But you can definitely do it, you just need to hustle.

My biggest suggestion is to find a fun project. I did a huge remodel at the Storm Peak Laboratory on Steamboat mountain. It was a lot of work, but I wanted to do it. I also got free snowmobile rides up to the peak before an lifts were open, free tickets, and a post-season ride in a snowcat to the top and go to ski down.

If you have fun with it, the work amount just becomes enjoyable.

i got life 6 months and 4 days from turning 18, i then managed to get eagle. you just need the project and the scoutmaster conference done by your 18th, the board of review can happen within 3 months. go for it, it's totally worth it

It's for people who dont sit on their ass all day and go out and camp, canoe, hike, climb, etc.

My troop is so stupid haha, the leader has been leader for SOOO long and he's oldschool and shit, like you have to be 17 or 18 to get eagle.. And no fun allowed on outings..

Go for the Eagle if you want, but take it from me, it won't get you anywhere.

My brother went to an all boys private high school, and he became an Eagle Scout, and it didn't affect anything besides people thinking he's a "good person," but behind closed doors he's a raging alchoholic. His troop master introduced him to smoking weed, cigarettes, and drinking when he was like 15, and that's something he still does today at 23 y/o.

I'm pretty sure that's the exception rather than the norm. Seeing how you aren't an Eagle I'd appreciate it if you didn't spew that shit about how "it won't get you anywhere". Believe it or not, it does look good on resumes and college applications.

BEING AN EAGLE SCOUT IS AN ADVANTAGE.

if you are already star or life, you probably have enough time. even if you are first class you can get it if your ass off. kind of cool that you want to get into it. believe it or not, scouting really does allow you to have opportunities that you wouldn't normally have. if any fellow scouts on here have been to
SEABASE or PHILMONT you know what i mean.

i got my eagle this past year and it's a pretty cool thing to get done. good luck op.

Like some of these guys have already said, it depends on what rank you are.  There are some required merit badges that take a month or more to do, so don't wait till the last minute to do them.  If you're 16 and wanna rejoin and try and get it, just be prepared to work really hard.  I'm 16 and just finishing up my project, then I have one or two more merit badges to do and I'll hopefully have it in a couple months.

lol if you think Boy Scouts is lame you clearly don't have a grasp of human nature, tribal mentality, or the true meaning of survival. Go out on the more high adventure expeditions. Go camping in the desert for a month or two with just the water that you bring in and find in rivers. Go rock climbing with your troop. Go climb a 14er (or higher). You can do all these things when you're older but Boy Scouts allows you a medium to organize these expeditions through with people who share similar interests.

If all that sounds boring to you, you either have very different interests than most of us on NS (probably more toward the "nerd" end of the spectrum), or you're just a really boring person. I mean all in all, your closed mindedness is your own fault. Good on ya.

I like how the boy scouts in this thread automatically assume that those of us who don't understand boyscouts aren't outdoorsy types...I've been doing that shit my whole life. I never needed to join a club for it.

I have drank/smoked with at least 7 eagle scouts. It is weird finding out someone else is an eagle scout while you are smoking a bowl with them.

Yeah, nobody ever said that. And so have I, but I enjoy being in an organization like that. Gets me perks and training that others wouldn't easily get otherwise. I wouldn't have climbed Rainier or went on a 2 month trip with just a backpack and a water filtration system if I hadn't been through scouts. If you had the skills to do that at age 17 with a group of your friends, more power to you.

That sucks man, and is definitely the first time I have heard a story like that. I really enjoyed my experience with scouting and came across way more good influences than bad influences.

I know most people in this thread have been talking about how the eagle has helped them with becoming more familiar with the outdoors, which is true, but you should also consider that the eagle award helps you later in life as well. When I was interviewing for my position at a bulge bracket investment bank, one of my interviewers said I should place being an eagle more prominently on my resume because it's something that impresses him and indicates that the person has a good amount of integrity and leadership skills. So yeah, if being an eagle can help you get a job at a company like that, I'm pretty sure it can help you (if only marginally) get a job / get into a school at a decent number of places.

To the OP: if you can, definitely go for it.

I'm 17 and it's already gotten me a lot of perks. Especially at the college I'm going to. Your brother is a small minority of Eagle Scouts.

I think it's called venture or something like that.. I see alot of venture troops at jamborees.

Like I went to West Point this past year for a jambo and it was co-ed and they actually threw a pretty sick party, like had a DJ playing biggie smalls and stuff at a BOY SCOUT jambo! hahaha, the Navy peeps had to break up girls grinding and shit... Theyre full of trouble!
