snobunnythis is also relevant-- this is my dining room, and i thought you'd appreciate the van der rohe reproductions. They are good reproductions (restoration hardware)


I'm fastidious about design so l'm sorry but I can't appreciate reproductions, (apart from Modernica's Eames line, but that's a given). I'd go so far to say that I only really fancy the real originals from Berliner Metallgewerbe Josef Müller but those are nearly unobtainable, hidden away in museums or dusty private collections. Tecta, Thonet and Knoll currently all make 'originals' and those aren't much more expensive then the Restoration Hardware one, all right twice as expensive but nothing as extreme as Barcelona numbers.

One of my biggest gripes is the name RH gives it: "1960S CANTILEVERED ARMCHAIR", apart from the obvious mistake in the era, there is not a single mention of Rohe, the man who designed it, they are capitalizing on the fruits of his labour, it denies the designer their royalty, the payment for their original idea in Rohe's case it mostly hurts sales of those companies who were granted permission by Rohe and who actually support the several foundations and societies that restore his buildings and legacy, those royalty's that companies such as Vitra and Herman Miller have to pay do make up for a large chunk of the price over a replica but with it they do so much more.

Furthermore most 'reproduction' companies produce their work overseas without any mention of the working conditions, workers' exposure to toxins, use of unethical and environmentally damaging materials and processes, it's a minor thing since very few companies give out such information but those making original designs do

What I do appreciate is that you are honest enough to not commit the cardinal sin of trying to pass them off as genuine.

I agree with you on the name, though-- I don't know why they would call them 1960's--probably just because if you know nothing about the origin, they look similar to mid-century modern design.

However, I should point out that although the price point of the RH chair is over $700, I paid $215/each, and they are nice quality (far better than any other chair I could get for $215)

I know the feel all to well, if I was more affluent in monetary terms then in possessions I would have long bought Albini's 838 Veliero bookcase by Cassina.

I've always like it, but it's been reproduced almost more often then the Eames dining chairs, although you will recognize a proper Knoll one straight away, Spinneybeck's leather quality is above and beyond the competition and the proportions are correct, replica's are often too big. But that price for them is insane.

just did it through campusbookrental, 88 bucks for two books for the semester isnt too bad, but i ordered the concise version of my english one instead of the regular so now i have to figure out how to exchage.


ima try amazon for the other two, its outrageous prices for them.

Don't. Go to the library and take it out. I did that with a few classes. I'd take them out, and it was for like a month at a time. So you renew like once, maybe twice or three times a semester and that's it. I only bought chemistry and math books, so I have reference material that I'd use in the future. Nobody ever put out a recall on them, so I never had any issues with keeping it for an entire semester.

After my sophomore year I figured out that most of the time I didnt even need the books for classes. So I waited until classes were underway to decide and ended up buying only 1 or 2 books for the last two years of college.

Just do what I used to do, gather up a boatload of textbooks the end of the year and sell them. Made 3k one year off selling textbooks.
