Good waterproof shell and warm layer combo not for skiing?

Following the success of my gloves thread, I was wondering if anybody knows of any good waterproof shells that I could wear while not skiing. Probably just for walking around in rain or snow, maybe hiking r other outdoor stuff. Plus a nice heat retaining layer to go under it would be cool. Also nice if I could wear it alone. I already have a columbia zip in layer that zips into my ski coat so I might wear that under a shell.

only thing is, I don't want to look like a goon, so a really tight fit isn't necessary but i might make exceptions depending on what it is. Probably be walking around campus, and skating in cold weather, probably a lot of wind so being able to move would be nice.

I rock one of those Oakley arctic challenge flannels under a quicksilver shell...I know your prob thinkin the flannel collar may be obtrusive but it isn't and looks great by itself....super warm too.

North face shell. The one that everybody else has. I know it's not too original but it works well and looks good

i just wear my nike 6.0 kampai with a thin sweater underneath its good for walking around

patagonia torrentshell. best rain jacket ever. it's incredibly light weight and you can ball it up and it zips into one of its own pockets basically making a pillow which is awesome on plane/car trips. highly recommended and patagonia is a super legit company

i use a arcteryx basic 3 layer raincoat for my backpacking, i must warn you though, gore tex does not mean rainproof, i spent a month in alaska where it rained every day and all my goretex shit soaked through, rei has some other technology that is in competition with goretex, supposed to breath more but it isnt completely waterproof either, but if you go with a gore tex material go with the proshell (heavier) not the soft shell,

i actually went to order one of those, but the place i was at told em they didn't have them in stock after i order, of course. I found other places to get one i think. also found some HH stuff too. I'll have to drop in an REI near me and have look around too.

Every waterproof fabric needs maintenance to stay in good shape. Pro Shell is no different.

A good waterproof shell will last you a while, so it's worth spending a bit of money on it. Deparmentofgoods usually has a decent selection for cheap prices, but we're still in sale rack territory at local shops, so check those too.

I picked up a Marmot Alpinist shell last year from Departmentofgoods and it's been perfect. Nice adjustments, pow skirt, Gore Pro Shell for skiing in the rain, long cut for wet chair rides.

Find a good fleece pullover in a sale rack. The company doesn't really matter, it's all about the pockets and at least a modicum of loft. Softshells give you warmth, and the ability to wear it alone in more conditions, but they might be too hot for some layering.
