I'm lucky enough to have kind of witnessed a launch in person. I used to live in Florida, and they would fly over my house occasionally, though somehow I only managed to be awake for one. It was crazy though, I had no idea it was coming and I was just hanging out in the living room doing nothing and all of a sudden I started to hear what sounded like just a jet at first, but then it got ear-splittingly loud and my house started to shake. Ran outside to see what was going on and was just like "................". It was pretty sick.

It really is quite sad, the last shuttle launch, NASA left without direction and almost no major advancement in space since the 1960's. The Russkies must be laughing now.

The reason we aren't on mars yet is because they are working on martian space suits.  They need a suit that will be able to survive the harsh sand storms in mars.  Just imagine the sand storm on mars it would be like taking a step into a bead blaster.  They are working on it so it shouldn't be long before they do.  They might have to work on a new method of space travel though.  Apparently every shuttle launch tares tiny holes in the atmosphere though.

I was there to watch the Challenger launch on what turned out to be it's last mission, but the launch was delayed. It finally ended up launching about a week later and, well, we all know how that turned out. I would have loved to have actually seen one of the shuttles launch in person.

That couldn't be further from the truth.  The reason we aren't on the moon again or on mars right now is because science is no longer 'cool'.  Things that maintain little interest receive very little funding.

To put it in perspective, we have spent over a trillion dollars since 9/11 to be the world police and all we did was kill a few boogie men and get a lot of soldiers killed.  Since shuttle program was put into service 30 years ago the shuttle program has only cost about 1/5th of that and what have we accomplished way more.  Things such as installing space stations at an altitude of almost 300 miles above the surface.  That's fucking incredible. 

Ask a kid in the 60's what he wanted to be when he grew up and chances are out of the top 3 things to be, one would be an astronaut.  Ask a kid now and he'll just say "I want to make millions".  The acquisition of wealth is the only thing that motivates young impressionable minds anymore.  As I said before it is truly depressing.

so true. Now the only thing that's cool is being on a reality TV show like jersey shore.

Math and science need to be promoted better in education, and not be "nerdy" like society makes it out to be.

everyone used to appreciate smart people a lot more.like when my parents were kids (i'm 19, so try people from like the 40's to end of the 90's). now no one gives a shit which is a sad thing.

Money. Most people don't know what they do up there, and since the majority does not see anything useful come from space exploration and the station funding went down the drain. They're shifting it over to private sector or something, so private companies are developing more powerful rockets with a higher payload capacity. It's the end of the space shuttle vehicle, I don't think of being in space. Not sure what type of vehicle they'll use now.

space shuttle was a piece of shit and just about always has been. Still a damn impressive piece of machinery and engineering...but not even a fraction of what people thought it was going to be.


Had we continued with the apollo hardware, we'd be much further than we are now.

it is strange because minus a few years here and there, space shuttle launches have been going on for my entire life, whether i noticed them or not. To think that I'll never get to see one again is a bit sad simply because of that fact.
