When did everyone get so serious?

OK... I've been looking through some of this seething hate against the B-Devine videos, and some of the stuff that the FD wear guys have done.

It also brings my mind back to when Tanner Hall jumped off the balcony at IF3 so many years ago... and the thread on here was "Tanner Hall is a classless idiot".

I've seen this happen many times over on Newschoolers... and I'll totally admit I'm super fucking confused.

When did the youth movement in skiing become so strict and conservative?

I mean shit... when I was younger this whole action sports movement was about doing crazy shit. Breaking rules, being a punk... bringing down the establishment. I know that my friends and I partied a whole shitload when we were skiing. That was a huge part of it. We'd rip hard on the hill during the day, then party hard at night.

It was this youthful energy that made it exciting. There's lots of drug tests, serious competition and training to win that has been in our sport forever. I'm sure the US race team doesn't jump cars in NZ on the way home from training camp.

The problem for me, is that is what was boring about the way things used to be. It was all no fun and just be serious and train all the time. I quit racing to get away from that so many years ago.

Now here I am, actually a parent now (I have a kid now for anyone that doesn't know) and for some fucked up reason I now more than ever like watching the crazy stuff that these guys do. I mean, I was always a smart enough kid to know that I shouldn't do things that were illegal, and I had a low tolerance for punk behavior... but that didn't stop me from enjoying the old Whiskey videos in skateboarding.

Most other action sports have their punks who do reckless shit... and people love it. Hell look at shit like Jackass and Nitro circus... people love it.

I'm completely confused why us as skiers, free spirited and seeping with teenage energy... all of a sudden are criticizing some of our pros for being wild and having a good time.

So lets hear it - why so serious?

Totally fucking agree. Thats what skiing is called '' Freeskiing ''. It's not about being serious and training all the time, it's about having a good time skiing, being with your friends, chilling, being free, the adrenaline, having fun and doing what you wan't!

If I saw someone doing that shit in my front yard, id cheer them on, id get in my car and have a party.

it's very easy... when we joined, we were outcasts by not only the snowboard community but also the ski community, even going as far as having your pass pulled for going into the park. we started park skiing because it was insanely fun, different and exciting and we KEPT park skiing because we generally didn't give a fuck. all the trend whores/pussies either kept out of the park entirely or went into it with only one plank... maybe one "rebellious" run through on skis. but now because skiing has gotten more popular/accepted, more of these trend whore pussies are attracted to it because its the new cool thing to do and it won't affect their gay little "image". sure it's unfair to say all the kids joining now are like this because it's simply not true but what is true is that the majority group of park skiers are becoming these kids that i'd absolutely would shoot myself hanging around with. basically when park skiing (or any other "extreme" discipline for that matter) first pops on the scene, it's only done by those who simply don't give a fuck about what other people think because you're doing it for the pure joy. i bet you a ton of fake money that most of the ridiculously stupid hate resulting from insignificant events come from these trend whores/pussies who would otherwise not be doing what we have been doing if it wasn't as popular or accepted as it is now. i prefer to think of them as cash sources making our sport that much more baller instead of real skiers. all these kids want is skiing to be in their image which is everyone being politically correct, all edits are PG-14, athletes are not athletes but employees of raising society's youth correctly and dealing with any company should include calling automated phone lines eventually answered by someone in india.

oh and if you are offended by that, you can just fuck off. you are not a real skier and you will never be one because you're too pussy to break society's standards to have an original opinion and identity.

Confused as to how this hasn't come up in the thread yet, thought for sure I would see it.

Anyways I'm slightly confused as well, the FD response was uncalled for but people blowing up over Tanner Hall's balcony jump (? haven't seen it) is stupid, I know that my friends and I ski during the day and party during the night, how most of the people on this site do it, but people do need to chill out.

And as someone posted on the first page, people do seem to agree a lot with the first few posts, no matter what they say, the following posts have almost no opinion. I know I've been easily persuaded on this site before but try to have your own opinion every now and then.

I'm with you Bishop, I'm pushing 30, but still try to have as much fun as possible.

Go ski, huck off of anything I can find, get drunk, chase skirts, laugh about the stories, repeat.

Haters gonna hate, and they're the ones missing out on the fun. The older I get the more I appreciate all of the crazy shit I've done, and for that matter survived over the years.

That's a problem.

And people need to chill out about the first drop thing. I don't see why everybody cares so much. And I don't see why everybody is looking for such professionalism. I know I'm not looking for too much professionalism in skiing. Note that having a good or bad product and proper services does not necessarily mean you (have to) act professional.

I completely agree.
But there is a balance.

There is still some business etiquette that needs to be attained in the rebellious market.

I think crashing a car, partying and smoking were all cool. But the way they were executed just made the company look very unprofessional. If they would have hired someone who knew what he was doing i would be totally ok. But you have to admit, it looked like someone did it in Windows Movie Maker.

As far as the thread is concerned. If it was some single guy on his account calling the kid out it would have been ok. But it was done on the FD brand name. You just wouldnt see something like that from any other brand with a PR committee. It was a stunt that made the entire brand look bad. Not edgy, crazy or cool. Bad and Douchey.

To say that the First Drop Outerwear thread is about people taking things too seriously blah blah is absurd, or to say that it counters the "punk" culture of action sports is insane.

This was about a company who, for whatever fucking reason, broke every public relations rule in the book - basically giving a giant 'fuck you' to the majority of their customer base by continuing to fuel the fire in the forum.

It made their company seem like it was run by a bunch of defensive 14 year old girls and that was crossing the line.
