When did everyone get so serious?

OK... I've been looking through some of this seething hate against the B-Devine videos, and some of the stuff that the FD wear guys have done.

It also brings my mind back to when Tanner Hall jumped off the balcony at IF3 so many years ago... and the thread on here was "Tanner Hall is a classless idiot".

I've seen this happen many times over on Newschoolers... and I'll totally admit I'm super fucking confused.

When did the youth movement in skiing become so strict and conservative?

I mean shit... when I was younger this whole action sports movement was about doing crazy shit. Breaking rules, being a punk... bringing down the establishment. I know that my friends and I partied a whole shitload when we were skiing. That was a huge part of it. We'd rip hard on the hill during the day, then party hard at night.

It was this youthful energy that made it exciting. There's lots of drug tests, serious competition and training to win that has been in our sport forever. I'm sure the US race team doesn't jump cars in NZ on the way home from training camp.

The problem for me, is that is what was boring about the way things used to be. It was all no fun and just be serious and train all the time. I quit racing to get away from that so many years ago.

Now here I am, actually a parent now (I have a kid now for anyone that doesn't know) and for some fucked up reason I now more than ever like watching the crazy stuff that these guys do. I mean, I was always a smart enough kid to know that I shouldn't do things that were illegal, and I had a low tolerance for punk behavior... but that didn't stop me from enjoying the old Whiskey videos in skateboarding.

Most other action sports have their punks who do reckless shit... and people love it. Hell look at shit like Jackass and Nitro circus... people love it.

I'm completely confused why us as skiers, free spirited and seeping with teenage energy... all of a sudden are criticizing some of our pros for being wild and having a good time.

So lets hear it - why so serious?

Yea its actually pretty weird, I'm hoping that freeskiing is not moving towards the ski racing attitude. Pros should be allowed to get drunk & do stupid shit because that's just having fun, after all whats skiing all about?

also, ive only watched one of the videos in question..but drinking and doing stupid shit is always cool. taping it and putting it online to seem cool has never been considered cool by anyone who has drank more than once. just sayin

That said you were the ones who decided to get all P.C. nazi with the moderating, and rushed to the aid of everyone who got offended by three to six letter words on their computer screen. That probably helped everyone get serious.

So Chug Life is not cool? I find edits with some drinking in them pretty funny, most of the time its not to show how cool they are but because funny shit happens when your drunk. They just want to share the funnies with everyone else.

Skiing isnt strict, its the people who run the mountains that dictate what happens. If they dont like what we do, they kick you out.

haha no offense but no i dont think chug life is very cool. drink and do hilarious stupid shit and have inside jokes with your friends.. but no one over the age of 15 is gonna have any interest in watching a video of it, they have their own friends and antics and inside jokes

point taken, but how many companies are lining up to sponsor mike wilson, now that he has been reduced to a stuntman? (this is not meant as a dis to wilson--what he does takes extreme skill) also, his sponsors aren't trying to identify their brand with his craziness, as far as i can tell.

Who are you to tell me or anyone else what fun is. Im sure Everyone in that video was having fun. Its all based on opinions. I bet I wouldve had an awesome time if i was with them partying and doing everything they did in that video. Now if you wouldnt thats your opinion. Doesnt make it right or wrong.

i dont think people are really as serious as they act on the internet. I see where a lot of people are coming from on the FD subject but at the same time people did make a big deal out of something small. But hey thats what this site is for right? sharing opinions on skiing culture. Am i a huge fan of seeing white kids with grills trying to act "hood"? not really but they can do what they want. I have no problem with the other shenanigans though, id like to be in new zealand jumping cars, partying, and getting paid to ski. I think most of it is that its the summer and people cant ski so they have to release their frustrations on something and FD was an easy target.

That's fine that you don't like it, that does not mean that everyone over 15 does not like it though, some people get kicks out of watching other people be idiots or have fun, I think that's why jackass was so successful. Some people enjoy that type of entertainment such as myself and others don't such as you but you can't generalize that into one age category of kids over 15 and kids under 15.

See - I disagree with this statement. A certain amount of professionalism is required to make certain people happy... but it would turn away others.

There's a market for attitudes of all types, which can't and shouldn't all be the same. You won't fail as a company or brand just because you're buttoned-up and super professional.

Look at technine and Grenade. Both very successful, and very reckless. Hell Volcom at SIA was always famous for budgeting to have extreme fines against them for the seeming on-staff partiers outside their booth.

Inside the booth was extremely professional, but the craziness is part of the brand identity. There's lots of brands just like this where the renegade shit is part of it.

Look at most gangsta rap. Sure they're musicians... but they don't need to have a proffessional and clean image to be popular and supported.

Drinking whiskey is bad exposure for the sport, olympics are good exposure. Why cant we have more money and suits?!? Its progression!! /endsarcasm

But seriously the coolest skiiers i know are the bums that live in the woods all winter long and they only place you see them are on the lift, in the woods, or at the bar. You shouldnt get into skiing if you hope to drive a lambo someday. Rather you should want to give up all of your worldly possesions to live in the woods with your dog, skis, and whiskey.

i dont get why some people say by watching that edit would turn them away from their products... the edit really had nothing to do with the products.. it was a good edit showing what freeskiers are supposed to be doing...loving life and not giving a shit about anything else but enjoying some time partying and skiing with their friends. how people dont want to buy a product from a company after watching and edit like that confuses the fuck out of me.

you have your view of the sport, i have mine. you like the punk aspects, i dont. the sport has begun to spread to more and more people and so a larger slice of the population has become involved. In the "good ol' days" the only freeskiers were people who were very rebellious, and punk. Believe it or not, only a very small segment of the population is actually like that, and as the sport keeps attracting more people, the sport will begin to reflect that.

Wasnt the whole point of freeskiing to be able to view and interpret the sport however you wanted? the way i view it is a reflection of who i am. I personally find a lot of FD's behavior distasteful...just isnt my thang.

Im not a fan of FD first and foremost because i think that there product is shit(quality and aesthetics). but also because the folks who run it come off as immature and arrogant...two qualities i dont want the owner of a company to have.

Couldn't agree more. Snowboarders and skaters can be as bad ass as they want and they just get more popular. I don't really like the super thug shit with the flashing icons, but I like that they do whatever the fuck they want. Bangers and mash is a happy medium for me although B&E is my favorite.

Well the internet is a serious place.

But how I feel:

Sammy Carlson ghost riding a sled into a bunch of snowboarders: Thats rebellion and badass in my book. He was even tearing up an all snowboard shoot.

First drop calling out a 12 year old kid over the internet: Thats just fucking lame.


I do believe that drinking and shenanigans like trashing cars goes hand in hand with out sport, and I think that video of the 9thward crew in NZ was awesome, but why call out a prepubescent boy over some gay pm?

It's the trend for all extremem sports.
1.everyone acts like idiots, being punks, destroying things, breaking rules.
take skateboarding, remember when bam was cool, and CKY and whatnot? all skateboard videos had loads of bad behavior in them.

2. then everything goes the other way, less stupid behavior in skateboarding now. I said LESS not NONE.

same went for rollerblading, and here it is in skiing, everyone wants to act all mature usually. instead of causing trouble all the time, they only cause trouble some of the time.

so basically, everyone is following skateboarding

None of those companies make attempts to belittle unsatisfied or disgruntled consumers.

There is a difference between maintaining a renegade or party-on image, and dropping to the level that FD did.
