Who has more influence: Level 1 or Tom Wallisch?

I can promise you Oakley was one of em...  It's not coincidence that athlete sponsors and movie company sponsors are the same.

Pretty sure wallisch doesnt make millions of dollars. They have to put their body on the line while you sit behind a lense. Filming is hard work but if you look at all the amazing edits and webisodes being put out by random people that are quality it makes me think its easier to become a good editor/filmer than pro skier.

I think it is because there just isn't a lot of people who buy/watch those movies... Just look at Hollywood, actors get paid a shit load, but the reason why the film companies there make so much money is because millions of people go pay to see their movies. So essentially the target audience for these films are relatively small, creating low sales and profits, and honestly putting an advertisement on television for Level 1's new movie would prob have a negligible effect on sales with relation to the costs of the ad.

So in conclusion athletes make more money then film companies because they themselves receive much more face time in the media, thus allowing these sponsors to get their merchandise and name in the lime light more then with relation to a movie by Level 1..

Just my 2 cents.

Maybe you should get a real job, or you could market yourself to camera manufactures as an extreme filmer, get yourself a filmer to film u filming, that would be as ground breaking as the skiers making more money than you

film companies have expenses ie. salary, rent, equipment, travel, etc. tom wallisch doesn't because his sponsors pay for it.

I think the threadmaker understands the costs of making a film, as well as those associated with those of an athlete.  And with the risk of puttomg words in his mouth, I think he is questioning why film companies aren't more financially compensated, as it seems pretty unanimous that the film companies have more marketing power/pursasion to the viewer than the individual athletes.

i realize this hahaha. it was one of those posts where you write something and think, "shit, i didn't really mean to post that," but i don't really know why film companies aren't more financially compensated. maybe freeskiing just isn't that big of a market. movies don't find their way onto national television, they don't reach the same audience that an event like the X-games or Dew Tour does. Movies really only make it to us, a relatively small sector of the ski industry on a whole. would you have heard of level 1 if you weren't on Newschoolers or heavily involved in the skiing community? probably not. if you're the general public and happened to be watching ESPN the day of the X-games, you might recognize the name Tom Wallisch. Technically, film companies like level 1 would have the same corporate sponsors as some riders, but i guess it's just easier to market a rider to the general skiing public as you're marketing gear as opposed to marketing a film company.

this thread is wildly off topic. OP, if you expected discussion regarding each of their salaries then you should have titled it appropriately. As far as influence goes I believe that goes to Tom. Level 1 is just a segway of his success, he is the more identified brand by a large margin. To put it this way, if tom wallisch changed up his style completely, rocking tighter gear, a few people would follow suit.

skiers wear gear from their sponsors in movies, so w/out sponsoring the producer, company's still gain marketing through the athletes in the movies wearing their gear

level 1 for sure, Josh Berman told me in an interview i did in 8th grade that Level 1 was the first to shoot/ride urban. Doesn't get much more influential than that.

It's the ski industry. Isn't the old saying, "If I wanted to make money, I would've gone into something else."? Your question can be answered in multiple ways. Immediately, it seems many of today's athletes are making much more than the entities that support their careers like film companies, websites, and magazines. However, an athlete's marketability can only last for so long. Level 1 is approaching 15 years as a sustainable company. I assume that will continue as long as the good people there want it to.

Look at the athletes that appeared in their first films. I'd say aside from maybe the Tanner or Candide cameo, none of them are making a living as a professional skier today. If they are in the ski industry, they're working for brands, not representing them. Very few athletes can make a sustainable living after their prime so I can understand why they (and their agents) feel entitled to make a lot of money in a short period of time. As for the media companies, longevity is the name of the game. There's not a get-rich-quick scheme out there that I'm aware of. However, having the ability to do this for years as a member of the media and watch athletes come and go is a pretty good gig. In the end, this thread appears to about who makes more money than influence.

didnt read the rest of the thread but just so your clear, Freeski athletes dont make as much as one might think, the top guy may make very little compared with the average Racer, or Figure skater for example, the sport just isnt at that stage yet, and they definitely dont make hundreds of thousands, or even close to the millions. Not one guy in either racing which makes much more money or freeskiing will be able to retire off their current salary.

I think you're asking the wrong people. Most of the people on here buy and watch ski movies, so naturally watch more level 1 than Tom Wallisch. If you ask the people who don't follow skiing much, Tom Wallisch would be a far more widely known name.
Its really hard to market a film company that, at the end of the day, makes films that most people are not going to watch. Not hating on ski movies at all, personally I watch them 24/7, but all my non skiing mates have only heard of Shaun White, let alone the pretzel man.

a few things ive noticed...obviously sponsors aren't just going to randomly jack up their budgets to support ski movies out of the blue. msp, wme, and tgr are all killing it on their tours...if i hear correct that is where a lot of their revenue comes in from...i know pbp has the triple threat tour but i don't know how much it affects your budgets. another idea is to ditch the traditional movie process. how much do you guys pay to have those dvd s made and produced? cut that out and sell it on other web related formats. maybe do the itunes deal along with doing it through your own site so you can keep more of the money you make off of each sale. plus then with traffic coming to the site you can have a bit more pull on the whole traffic numbers and make more money off of ad space on the site too.
im no business major...but i feel that making dvd copies of your stuff is way too old school in this day and age. when you can get anything online and watch it on one of thousands of different types of gadgets it just makes more sense to me to follow that avenue and take more of a cut of each sale for yourself instead of paying middlemen to produce physical, hard copies of it. i currently have a dvd player in my house that i haven't turned on in months, but i do have my computer that i hook up to my tv to watch movies on...movies i downloaded at a fraction of the cost of what a dvd would have been and the money went directly to the distributor/maker of the flick.
also i saw that level 1 is doing those shorts for espn during the season which brings up a whole different thing. instead of doing 1 movie a year i feel that dudes like nimbus are on top of it in that regard...several episodes released on a more real time basis. keeps interest high throughout the season and i bet NOBODY touches nimbus' numbers during the actual scene in terms of view count....they might be cutting A LOT of corners with the music department but thats a different topic. if you focus more on individual trips you can bring in sponsors a bit more easily and have them profit more directly from getting a better presence in that one piece as opposed to a small slice of the pie spread through the movie. do a few of those pieces charging a certain fee for guaranteed high profile awareness of the company in it and i feel that could offset the whole struggle of having to secure a whole years worth of budget in one meeting.

doubt anything is going to chance and magically more money is going to fall down in anyones lap anytime soon. so the best idea is to change the game a bit and get all that awesome imagery out there in a different way. internet video is here, dvd's are going out.

Because Billabong will likely see 5-10 minutes of coverage in a 40-60 minute movie.

However, they see a whole season of photos, videos, competition coverage, as well as poster signings etc. from giving an athlete a sponsorship. It's just viewed as much more valuable to them, as it probably is.

They are also paying for loyalty, a ski movie production company is pulling money from wherever they can. If a company wants to pay for sponsorship exclusively, it's mega bucks.

I don't know what Tom makes annually and what Level 1 makes annually. I'll bet Tom keeps a much higher percentage as profit, but I would also be surprised if Level 1 didn't make more than he does before expenses. That's just an educated guess though.

If you check out that "Seb Tout" or whatever thread, you'd see I was impressed and liked it. I have nothing against snowboarding, but as it doesn't please my aesthetic desire in snowsports, I don't really enjoy it.

Still, principles, you know. Good moderation: non-skiing? Non-ski gabber. Simple as that. Also, there's the video section "Misc" which it would fall under on NS before Eheath is let loose on Mr. Bachelor here.

ski companies are compensated to a degree that is in line with their expected value to the sponsor. northface gives level1 X dollars and no more than X dollars because X dollars is sufficient to get the northface logo in the intro of the level 1 flick. you must realize that in comparison to the total audience northface hopes to reach in advertising in a given year, the audience that will view "after dark" is more or less negligible.

but, when millions of kids who have the most cursory understanding of freeskiing watch the Xgames and see tammy walsack win gold in next years northface gear, they think "wow, cool that s what extreme kids wear, so when my parents take me to aspen this year i'm going to make them buy me that," Sponsorship of tom wallisch translates directly into sales if he does well. Support of Level 1 appeals only to an extremely limited, albeit avid, group of core skiers.

Northface wants to court both the weekend warrior and the once-a-year fucktwat. Unfortunately for our film industry, the latter group hold a considerably larger purse, and is accessable primarily through Sal-masa-Xtreme-kalaESPN.

the hype is that from a skill level perspective, tom is on an entirely different level than ahmet. tom has the dubs, tom has the competition results, tom has the countless movie segments, tom has the rail tricks, but above all tom does it with style. i'm not saying that i'm tom wallisch's biggest fan, it's just that it's obvious to see that they are on different levels. and that's not to say ahmet isn't an amazing skier.
