Dont ask me how I found this, but an interesting quote from Wikipedia's page on Ice:

Until recently, it was widely believed that ice was slippery because the pressure of an object in contact with it caused a thin layer to melt. For example, the blade of an ice skate, exerting pressure on the ice, melted a thin layer, providing lubrication between the ice and the blade.
This explanation is no longer accepted. There is still debate about why ice is slippery. The explanation gaining acceptance is that ice molecules in contact with air cannot properly bond with the molecules of the mass of ice beneath (and thus are free to move like molecules of liquid water). These molecules remain in a semiliquid state, providing lubrication regardless of pressure against the ice exerted by any object.[7]


Seriously? We have Olympic sports in which this fact is... well, crucial. And we have no idea how it works? Led me to a cool article, worth the read, and...

Why do we like ass? I mean we all find nice booty enjoyable, but biologically their is no reason for it, we like big tits because it means more milk for children, and a fit body becaus it means good genes for children, but a nice ass dosnt mean anything in terms of children.

well.i would guess that since. most if no all animals fuck from behind and that butts are part of the hip.

Gravity does have a 'speed' though at which it engages, which is fucking crazy really... What is the purveyor of the force of gravity, how do objects 'know' that other bodies out there are exerting force on them? Gravity is pretty strange compared to the other forces (strong and weak nuclear forces, electromagnetic) when you think about it.

ive been reading "A Short History of Nearly Everything" by Bill Bryson (if you like learning a bunch of random shit, like in this thread, for sure read it). he explains that gravity is the bending of space time, and the easiest way to grasp it is to imagine space time as a flat surface that bends like a mattress or a blanket held up by the corners. now if you put something heavy on the blanket (representing an object of significant mass) and then roll a marble along the side or anywhere on the blanket, it will roll towards the heavy object. the marbles tendency to roll towards the object represents gravity. seriously, read the book, its dope.

adolescence does happen with other creatures. dogs go through about a 2 week span of adolescence when they become increasingly disobedient and exploratory, as if they're actually trying to push the boundaries with you as an owner. it's really weird and funny

Great thread. There is tons that we still don't know and plenty that we except as fact, that may not be.

There was an awesome episode of Mythbusters on a few days ago. "Blow your own sail". It should be impossible because it goes against 2 Newtonian laws, but they were able to do it. They attached an air boat fan facing forward to the front of the sail boat and into the sail. They were able to push the boat forward. It didn't disprove Newton's law that "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction", but they were still able to do something that seems physically impossible. The question is, what else are we assuming won't work, that actually might?

im sure newtons law didn't just like fuck off for that one instance, there was probably some underlying variable that caused it to happen... im watching it now an it seems like sail just sort of became a really inefficient way of rerouting the fan thrust backwards since it was sort of curved, if that fan had been turned the other way it would have gone a lot faster.

Agreed. It revectored airflow, but the point was that it was something that was thought to be impossible. Even though it isn't rewriting Newtonian physics and it would definitely have been more efficient to turn the fan around, the simple fact is that it worked.
