we haven't set up a single oil tap onto their oil reserves, and we are still paying for the oil from Iraq. I dont know why everyone keeps saying that and it is obvious that they have not researched the issue. While I agree that NKorea is just as large of an issue, people blindly believing the only reason we went in their was oil because MSNBC told them so shows how much power empty facts can become

cant we just turn our heads the other way and let North Korea just be assholes to their own kind? I mean its not directly effecting us...sure its wrong. But its like you 32 year old lonely bachelor neighbor that likes to wear females underwear and dance around to Prince, its none of our business.

It not like we arnt already tied up with all the shit in the middle east.

saddam hated us. he could easily cut us off, re-invade kuwait, and/or sell the oil to china/india/russia. We wanted to stabalize the regions oil...which we actually did.

we obviously arent going to straight take the oil. Im saying the reason that we went into Iraq vs Sudan(or other shitholes), is because we have economic interests in Iraq. simple as that.

fair enough, I can certainly deal with that.. Most people think we are simply "taking" iraq's oil which simply isnt true. I do feel that there was A LOT more to this war than simply strengthening our oil supply.

Fuck No! its just that we cant go saving every country that has evil shit going down, so we help the countries that we have interests in.

Iraq was very much on the same level as the DPRK in terms of human rights violations...but they have oil, and the DPRK only has giant rats bred for food, and copious amounts of Hennesy.

I think that america should re-institute the draft and go wreck shit in all those countries. we should get together and form a Russia/China/USA coalition and work together to rid countries of these crazy leaders.

Our generation is the most pussified generation in hundreds of years...call it enlightened, i call it cowardly.

if we give them the korean peninsula, but keep our bases there they'd be down.

hell, we could also let em have mynmar, and some other shithole SE asian countries. in exchange, they have to supply most of the manpower for the coalition(its not like they're hurting for population).

A major problem in North Korea is the propaganda machine of the regime, most citizens quite literally believe that they live a better life than those outside of their country. They've been willing to tolerate the WPK's oppression because of ignorance but also because of relative "comfort". IMO North Korea is almost at a breaking point, over the past decade and a bit the country has no longer been sustainable. People now NEED to challenge the rules just to survive. The creation of black markets, border crossings/returns with goods from China and escapes all mean there is probably more contact with the outside world and more dissent than ever before.

The cultural/economic/ideological liberalization of North Korea is probably happening albeit very slowly and like others have said I wouldn't be surprised to see a revolution there within the next 15 years. It could either come from within from pure necessity, or may be similar to the Arab Spring. Or perhaps the world will finally embark on a humanitarian intervention that is purely altruistic in a country that is above and beyond all others (currently) when it comes to state human rights violations. Part of the responsibility should also fall upon escaped North Koreans and South Korea which still claims sovereignty over the entire peninsula.

I could see it going two ways.

1) Society will engage in black market and secretive activities to the point that it will eventually overthrow its leaders and most likely rejoin with South Korea after the dictatorship is removed.

2) The regime keeps its stranglehold to the point that it causes society to completely collapse, and I mean completely collapse, millions die in ensuing riots, food shortages, civil war.

The country seems to be going more towards option number 2 since the early 90's...

pretty much, crush the saddam regime and put a "friendly" regime in its place to secure the US oil flow ....
+they can cover their asses with humanitarian shit, building schools and hospitals, teaching their farmers, building up a decent form of law enforcement, making sure the iraqis rule their own land exactly like the US wants them to ...

why else would the US be fighting in that dessert ?


if they'd be all so concerned about corrupt regimes and mal treatment of people, why don't they go rage war in africa, that shit's much worst, only difference would be that the US has no direct interest in those regions ....

no its not. Iraq was very similar in how it treated dissidents, to Nkorea. They had used chemical weapons on their own people in an attempt to destroy an wipe out an entire ethnic group. On a humanitarian level-WE SHOULD HAVE GONE INTO IRAQ and removed saddam. they reason why we did go into Iraq and not Africa, was because Iraq had something we wanted as well.

on a humanitarian level the US should go rage war in almost half the world, the only reason they did so in iraq is because of the oil...


if the US would care so much about humanitarian support, they would/could be doing a much better job of it than they're doing now ....

+ if they would only rage war because of that, they could've picked a much easier one somewehere in africa and help much more people than they're helping right now ...

I think both are happening simultaneously but you are probably right that number 2 is coming out on top, the growing prison camps are testament to that.

I won't pretend to be an expert on Chinese foreign policy but fuuuuuck if these guys ever want to be seen as more than a giant toy factory with nukes and a UNSC veto they could start by cleaning up the North Korean mess right on their doorstep.

they don't want the flood of refugees and they also need a buffer between them and the democratic west, it means in the event of a war its another front that they have to send resources to. thats chinas reasons among others for not wanting to get involved.

those places are fucked up. in north korea if a family member of yours commits a crime, you usually end up there. And usually people don't come out alive..... theres a National geographic documentary about North korea and they touch on this a little bit.
