It says they need a warrant or probable cause, obviously, but what determines probable cause that you were texting?

if you text and drive your a fucking retard anyways. Even a handsfree speakerphone cellphone conversations splits your mental activity in two and reduces your ability to drive to that of an intoxicated person. theres just no way the average persons mental capacity can handle the attentiveness required in driving while carrying out an entirely unrelated conversation. Texting is even worse cuz now your pushing little buttons and looking at your phone and not the road.

"A US Department of Justice test of the CelleBrite UFED used by Michigan police found the device could grab all of the photos and video off of an iPhone within one-and-a-half minutes. The device works with 3000 different phone models and can even defeat password protections.

"Complete extraction of existing, hidden, and deleted phone data, including call history, text messages, contacts, images, and geotags," a CelleBrite brochure explains regarding the device's capabilities. "The Physical Analyzer allows visualization of both existing and deleted locations on Google Earth. In addition, location information from GPS devices and image geotags can be mapped on Google Maps."

hmmmm. Last time I got arrested (for trespassing for UE nbd we got let off), I was in the holding center and the one police officer came up to me and put two Polaroids face down in front of me. He said "pick one." So I picked the one on the right and flipped it over. It was a picture of a huge fat black chick fingering herself. He then said "wow your a scumbag didn't know you like the dark meat." I was like wtf and turned over the other picture which was a dude blowing another dude? he was like "your glad u didn't pick that one huh?", as he put both Polaroids back into his front pocket.

The fact that they were weird ass pictures and that they were Polaroids (did he take them?) really weirded me out

Well thats the end of my cool story about weird cops who like weird shit.

When someone is talking on the phone, i'm still scared but not as bad.

ok that's really weird.

but anyway I live in Michigan and if I got pulled over for a minor traffic violation there is no way they are touching my phone. I don't really have anything to hide, but that's bullshit. I would feel so violated, especially because it could be something as minor as rolling through a stop sign. What does that have to do with the information on your phone?

I text and drive, talk and drive and sometimes go on the internet and drive if i'm trying to find the answer to a question.

I don't do it if there are a ton of ppl around but there are already wayyy to many shitty drivers on the road for me to feel bad about it. If i did an obstacle course while i was on the phone against half of Vancouver when they were just normally driving I know I would still do better. Fuck shitty drivers ruining it for the rest of us

Yeah, thats the issue. Not only does it pull texts but EVERYTHING off your phone. The article said it can even recover deleted information. I can't think of anything on my phone that I wouldn't show anyone but just the fact that they are pulling all the information off your phone is way too intrusive.

it doesn't fucking matter, to YOU. i honestly could care less about what they pull off my phone and its not because of (insert generalized stupid comment here) but because its a PHONE to me. that's all, just a phone. i've never been tempted to get a smart phone or any crap like that because its unnecessary. i don't invest anything of value into the device except for contact info. if i want to have a personal convo. with someone without anyone knowing, i talk to them in person or CALL them (you know what phones are meant to do?). this is about as important to me as if they took a record of all my songs on my ipod shuffle. so go ahead and get your panties in a bunch over it because that's one of the trade-offs for having your phone centralized around your life. when it comes down to it, you have to realize that anyone, not just officers, can access what you put out there online or on any electronic devices. that's a fundamental risk people have seemed to completely forgot about.

and we live in a perfect world with incorruptible officers and the magic power of the constitution always protects everyone's personal civil rights... i'm in no way advocating this but man, you cannot be so naive. hell i hope it gets shot down because it'll rid of a LOT of bitching and because, you're right, they cannot do it legally but you can bet your ass they'll find a way around it. and no i don't think this is some slippery slope to a police state... hardly from it.

again we're talking about CELL PHONES. you can live in a world without one, or did you forget about times when you used a phone book? we're not talking about cops rummaging through your house whenever they please, or keeping a watch on everything you do. hell go visit england or great britian where they have cameras literally on every corner. that's WAY closer to a police state if you ask me than pulling surf info. off a smart phone. they want this information to help prove you were texting/calling while driving. what do YOU think they could do with this information? do you honestly think they're going to sit around the morning briefing table and share what they pulled off of randos phones? you know like put it on facebook and like stuff? i had a bad experience with an officer pulling me over recently. after going to his chief and writing up a report about him, the chief gave me a piece of great advice... don't do anything wrong and you won't have to deal with it in the first place.

that's all pretty standard information for the police to have... and no they don't get the passwords, the program can BYPASS passwords to obtain the information but not actually store the passwords themselves. and i don't know why you're not reading what the article or i just said, but it clearly tells you why they want the information... but now you're starting down the path toward a glen beck-type conspiracy theory with that "they're doing it to track everybody" crap. you're grossly overestimating the capabilities/resources of the local police force...

1. what's your point? you're just regurgitating common knowledge that if you have a record, unless under 18, it stays. that's what a record does and how does this relate at all to what you're talking about?

2. the roundup of the japanese during WW2 in no way correlates to this. it was one of the most controversial moves of eisenhower's administration and has been fully regretted. its a widely agreed upon shameful time in our country's history.

so let me get this straight... you think all the local police are rounding up people's info. off of their iphones for some master plan of throwing certain kinds of people into detention camps down the road?
