Nikon v. Canon

Hello gentlemen,
So I am looking into purchasing a DSLR and I was wondering if there are any distinct differences between a Nikon and a Canon DSLR or if it is just like a witch one fits my price point with better features. If anyone could shed some light on this it would be most appreciated and rewarded with karma.

Meh, doesn't really matter.  If you're gonna buy Nikon wait a couple months until the D5100 and D400 drop.
-Canon has 60p for video
-You can use just about any Nikon mount lens on the D90 and up, Canon has different mounts
-Look into Pentax

A lot of the decision is your preference on their ergonomics and other things.  Pentax, Nikon, and Canon all make very good cameras.

no big differences, both take good pictures in the hands of good photographers, and bad images in the hands of bad photographers. Some people like different things about different ones.

I like nikon because I like the glass options, and the quality of the glass more, as well as how the lenses and cameras are made.

I wouldnt exactly ever HOPE that a camera comes with a kit lens. But that's just me..

All nikon lenses fit nikon bodies, the auto functions just don't work.

One time I heard that if you try an older lens on something like a D40 or D5000 or D3000 or something lower end like that the camera will turn off, but I'm not sure about that.  I know it will work on a D80/90 and everything higher.  We aren't talking about Canon here, Nikon and Pentax kept the same mount.

yeah i think the d40 is the only exception, but who the fuck uses d40s anymore.

nikon hasn't changed their lens mount since they started making lenses, or at least very close to that. any lens that has an aperture control ring will work on any old or new camera. On new cameras, of course there won't be auto functions, but you can program in lens data with the focal length/range, and max aperture, and then it will meter and run exif data correctly. Even new G series lenses (no aperture ring) will "Work" on an old body, such as your nikkormat, but you won't be able to control the aperture.

I guess that's true. I forget that there's the prong you can fuq up if you don't have the AI notch. I have a lens that was manually AI'd by whoever owned it at the time.

All Nikon's use an F-mount. ALL of them. Always have.

Canon on the other hand uses FL-mount, FD-mount and now EF-mount. The FL is pretty much obsolate (they got discontinued in the '60s or something) and most FD mounts don't allow infinity focus on EF-mount camera's. You can buy special adapters that do though, although they're slightly more expensive than 'normal' adapters, I think the cheapest ones run like 50$.

As to Canon vs Nikon: It doesn't matter. Canon has much better video, but I'm starting to like Nikon more and more for their camera's. I don't know much about Nikkor glass.
