I hear about a billion people an hour complain that NS is going to shit, and that its only full of trolls. I'm sick of it.

First off, this isn't true. There's tonnes of great discussion on here.

Second off, do something about it. You know what makes quality threads? Quality posts. If you don't have something good to add to the conversation, then shut the fuck up.

I'm a BIG fan of newschoolers, and a big fan of the fact that we have an open discussion forum for the sport of skiing. I mean with how many people we have here, we are a big chunk of the sport believe it or not.

Go out and make a quality post, and don't feed the trolls.

And just to let you guys know, I don't mind the process of posting "first" and "this" and such. I consider this "harmless fun" posting... which doesn't detract from good discussion.

Of course if you have something to say, then say it vs. just claiming first.

There are members that rip on every single post.  Noobs might be an annoyance but we were all noobs at one time. There is no need to rip on a kids first ever post, instead give him some quality advice and they will catch on sooner or later.

very well said. NS is never gonna sound like a UN meeting and for all i care it shouldnt. what it should be is a group of FRIENDS (no hating anymore) discussing a sport we all lova and enjoy.

Word, it seems like a lot of older members, or younger members who feel like if they act older they'll be cooler..., act like this place should be strictly business...no fun. Personally, I think NS is awesome because I can interact with people who have the same interests as me, and find humor in similar things.

You should know this better than anyone; NS is built from the bottom up, not the top down. NS is and has always been the coolest, much in touch, and corest consumers in skiing. Yes, I stole that from Matt Harvey. The reason why we're so fucking cool, in touch, and core is that the members have always set the tone. I'm not making an argument for anarcho-NS as I am a firm believer and supporter in the need for moderators. When presented with the information, the members decide whats cool, the reds saying something cool doesn't make it cool. This is going to sound extreme but changing NS from member driven to corpo-NS is not something that should be considered.


That being said, what are you trying to get at lately? I don't think it was about my post so far. What i'm saying is be careful how you try to change NS. As I brought up a few months ago which met mixed review is also from the name NS radio from the harvey quote. Harvey says that there is always going to be a group of trendsetting members that everyone will follow. Those members aren't the greatest right now.


If anyone wants that NS radio, send me a pm and i'll email it to you. It is the fucking gospel.

Believe me... I know what you are saying probably better than any other human being on this planet.

The absolute reason that Newschoolers is the single best place in the world is because it is built by the users. Thats what this whole place is about.... and as a matter of fact, even when I say something I have to present my idea just like any other member. It is definitely up to the people to decide how they want the place to run.

People do not want anarcho-NS... we've asked a billion times before, and every single time it comes to a vote heavier moderation is favored over top of free-for-all.

Where did I say that? If you inferred that out of anything I have said then I have grossly mis-represented myself. Believe me... I defend this place with every ounce of my soul. Where have I been for so long? Building NS into a business that does what it wants. I wake up every single day and fight for this site to stay as a representation of the ski community, and a place built by its users. I will not ever involve ourselves in events, publications, ANYTHING that don't allow us to continue that ideal.

When you ask what I've been trying to get at lately... what I feel is like in my absence things were running slightly amuck. Though I do have a red name, and act as a leader of this site, I ALWAYS make sure to do so with the feelings of the Newschoolers community as the first and foremost thing that guides me.

Maybe it simply is that the trendsetting members right now aren't the best... whatever it is, I am getting heavily involved again to fight the good fight.

In all honestly I think something we've been lacking is these types of discussions.... where is this community going... who are we? Simply having open dialogue as a community is key. We used to do a lot more of that.

Good post on that Old NSRadio show. Man do I ever miss that... that was such a wicked fun thing to do.

yeah if you know what threads to click on most of the time youll find good discussions. if you click on something thats been seen a million times before your problllyyyy not gonna see anything constructive haha.

for the most part i see a lot of good shit on NS.

Member Driven to corpo NS: Obviously that is not something that would happen. I was thinking how not NS it would be if what is cool was decided by news articles, not threads. It was an extension on how NS is member driven and not driven by the office.

What have you been trying to get at lately: I have noticed that you have been super active lately. By the sounds of this thread, it was just to stimulate good conversation. I'm usually the first one to jump to conclusions so I was wondering if you were doing this by sponsor requests or any other unknown motive. That is what i was trying to get out of you without saying or at least hoping that it'd make you think. I read the ns media kit that dan brown (mod) posted a link to the other day which is spot on to what the first paragraph of my post was.

Red Name posting: Now we're into unchartered territory. As you may remember, I had an orange name for a while. And when I lost it I made the stupidest thread ever with a lot of bad assumptions in it. The topic was proper orange name conduct. However it didn't go over that way. I tried to find it a while ago but i guess it was removed. Red/Orange/green posts are viewed different than the blue and pinks. When you're a Red/Orange/green, you have to watch what you say and really don't have a blue/pink experience. anyone is free to voice opinion on this. I don't even care if anyone disagrees, I think this is a good conversation. It's something I wish I heard months ago.

Why don't we have convos about this anymore: I guess a lot the people who used to spearhead this conversations became mods or don't post anymore. That brings me to NS transperency. I don't think the mod forum should be open to all but I would like to hear more about when the office is planning on making a move.


Ugh, I keep wanting to call the reds corpo NS, not in the act, but just because you run the show, I guess I'm settling for the office.

I'll weigh in on this a little. Firstly on what I quoted, that yes as you know, having a colored name does limit what and how things can be said. Why? Because we represent the community and we need to be careful on how we reflect our roles. I've been green for a little over a year and I am most certainly a lot less active in the public forums because of this.

Another thing I do want to say. I joined in 2007, and when I joined I was hooked because of the amazing community I had stumbled upon. I have from this site, met and developed some of the most amazing relationships I've ever had (and had some awesome winter adventures). There was such a communal aspect to this site, and that is why it was so special. No other community based forum could compare. I do speak in past tense though (lightly, I don't fully feel this way), as I feel that communal feeling has certainly been lost in the sea of internetting and members no longer understanding what this site is truly supposed to represent, and what it has created for this sport over the years. I do feel as though I babysit. And its not really the age and maturity thats the problem, because I'm sure OG members were just as immature and silly. But it was in less quantity. With the amount of members we have today, its hard to keep under control. Of course this site will "never be like the old days" - that doesn't mean it can't strive to have days, weeks, months, and years similar. I think there needs to be more member responsibility when you join. The rules need to be changed to reflect the generation change. And they need to be something you agree to when you sign on, not hidden in SD where let's face it, not everyone travels. Though I do think they should remain as a sticky.

Its easier to achieve better content from there too. If members cared more, the sections we all love so much would be cared for more, and there would be less to clean up. All the technical stuff is and always will be - but what we as members can achieve is more than you're willing to let yourselves believe sometimes. We need that communal feeling again. I do see less internetting, but it isn't fully gone. I've always said, NS isn't just another site on the internet. Treat it with respect.

on the more active mods/admins thing, Mr.Bishop being super active today has spurred a lot of good conversation, and got a lot of people stoked on the state of ns.
Seeing this, i believe change could be initiated from the top down. Threads started by orange/red/green names have more weight, no matter whats in them, and more activity could spur more quality stuff in the threads, as seen by today.

I'm actually not sure if there is a generation change. There is going to be a fresh crop of 13 year olds every year while every one else on this site get older every year. When we get older, we get more mature, I used to wish that NS was more serious, that was a big site discussion topic like a year ago. I'm over that now. You brought up the increase in members which is obviously true and also the social attitude of the internet is getting less cereal thanks that 4chan. Do the rules really need to be changed? What rules have changed?

I wish you'd say a little more about how green/red/orange are there to set an example. There is more on that topic for sure but most of it probably isn't appropriate for a thread. That is another problem, some of these convos get a point where they aren't appropriate for threads.

k.rob: please let your post be the topic of your insomnia tweets. I look forward to reading those on the bus to class tomorrow.

Yeah no, activity as of late from me has not had anything to do with sponsors or bosses or whatever. Just felt like it was time to make some waves.

Even if it was sponsor stuff, its funny because when we're selling ad packages we always tell the sponsors that you can't force interaction on people. You can present yourself well, act properly, and hope the NS community likes you and wants to interact with you.

I think if you needed to assign a reason it would be that I wanted my voice to be heard. I think I have some good things to say about a few topics, and Newschoolers is a great place to say them. Especially the forums. The forums make up 40% of the overall traffic to the site... so its quite a lot.

You want to talk about the name colors....

Well I'll say it - you're right. With the color of the name comes certain assumptions. That is the intention of those colors.... Red means the person officially works for the site in some capacity, Green means they are a moderator, Orange means "legit industry person", pink is a chick and blue is a regular member.

Orange names were my idea. The concept there was to stop it when say Tanner Hall came on the site and posted, and the discussion simply broke down into 'is this tanner? Is it? No it can't be... who is this really?'

I wanted it to be like BAM yes this is an industry person.

As for red or green.... well just because we work for newschoolers doesn't mean we know everything. Sure a person like that discussing an issue on the site would have way more knowledge than an average user. However, they wouldn't necessarily have a better opinion of judging at the X-games.

Should we be more open about what we're doing? No. We're damn open about what we do all the time. But we can't be open ALL the time. The bitching would be endless. Sometimes, a staff needs to communicate as a staff without the general public chiming in or breathing down their neck. We need to develop strategy and work to implement it.

We take the things you ask for, turn them into rules and bring them back out to the community.

You can call the reds corpo NS if you want... but what does 'corpo' really mean? I mean my company is incorporated... but its a small company. Newschoolers is now owned by a fucking MASSIVE corporation... but they let us do our thing.

What really is this whole 'corporate' thing anyways?

And finally - I sincerely doubt if corporate could ever even happen... you guys would revolt and leave.

True so true. I absolutely love Newschoolers the way it's. Sure there are some bad days, with some god awful threads, but then there are also days where i am engaged in great discussions that i really enjoy and are the reason i return to this site. We are an awesome community of people and i have high hopes for what Newschoolers can become.

There should be some sort of training school to train the new members so they won't be a complete dumb asses. I am somewhat joking and somewhat not, some sort of video or message sent right when you log in for the first time, would help sort out some of the needless threads. Certainly would have helped me...

Obviously if NS corpo'd out, I would form trobschoolers.com I'd llc so you couldn't go directly after me then steal the current NS code, launch, and wait for the big bad website formerly known as NS to sue me. Theres probably a way to fuck me over and not just trobschoolers llc but it'd be so core. (also inspired by that the matt harvey ns radio show.)

Finally. You are completely right about the legitimate conversations and discussions on NS. Just not a lot of them are found in places like NSG where any thread you make is bound to be ruined by trolls. Personally, I love NS and I am very happy to be a member of this awesome site. Better forum discussions = better site and forum expierience. I approve strongly.

I've been a memeber since 04 which is seven years last month and honestly I hate NS now. Oddly enough I hate NS because ever thing I post (photos,videos,and threds) gets mad hate, for no damn reason. So what my pants are tight, so what my edit isn't to wiz kalifa or lil wayne? Honestly thats what my problem with ns is. Ha its funny I actually had a kid tell me that my skiing was pretty good but it would look better if I got shorter polls and baggier pants. WTF I dont need some 14 year old kid from the east coast to tell me how to dress, thats what I have a mom for.

I fully agree...I'm sure it was a lot of work and didn't catch on as much as I had hoped but it would be awesome to get some form of that back.

As far as quality I don't think things have "gone down the tubes" in terms of quality threads/posts/members. The site is MASSIVE now compared to say even 5 years ago. So obviously you are going to have to sift through some junk to find the good stuff but there is plenty to go around. I certainly don't contribute(post wise) as much anymore but I am always reading on here.

With time you get to know what/who to look for. I have a mental list of many members I will instantly read their threads and on the flip side many I won't bother with. It is hands down the most interesting forum I am on nothing compares IMO. Love NS

Exactly what I was going to say. There is plenty of good discussion on the site, you just have to sift through some shit to find it. I also agree that there are certain people that you can look at and their threads will almost always be a good read. Summer NS usually sucks pretty bad, but there are plenty of other things to go do anyway.

Theron, I respect you, but you have to realize that you are the other side of the problem. I don't think it's fair to call you a hypocrite anymore, as you've certainly left the postwhore/ /b/tard stage of your e-life behind, but I hate seeing the hate you sometimes baselessly spew. You certainly aren't the only person who consistently calls other members out needlessly, but I really feel the need to tell you, and others, that it's not that hard to just tone down the hate a little. I doubt that anybody gives a shit about what I have to say, since everybody still thinks I'm just a dumb postwhore, but I'm saying it anyway.
